I tried to add a new type with

ack-grep --type-set vala=.vala

but it failed with

ack-grep: No regular expression found.

apparently, I'm not the only one to have this problem:

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=975564

for the moment, I'll try to add it manually to the .ackrc

btw: would it be possible to add vala[1] files to the list that ack
understands? :)

one last thing: the web server is still down (I thought it was a
recent problem, but maybe it's the same as before the 31th?)

thanks

That only sets the type for the duration of that call.  It's not a permanent setting.  You still need to specify something to search for.

Probably not.  I don't even know what vala is.  Regardless, it needs to go into the issues queue on GitHub.

Argh.  Anyone want to help me diagnose Varnish stopping every so often? :-(

oh, ok... from the manual it seemed like by using that flag it
would've automatically edited the .ackrc, maybe it could use a
rewording?

I see, indeed vala is not used much outside of linux (if at all)...
but if you've a gnome desktop, then you already have installed some
software written in it :D

about github: on betterthangrep.com there's no reference to it (aside
from the link to the ackmate project)

It's in the man page.  Is that not enough?  Where on betterthangrep.com would you expect to find such info?

xoa

I'll admit it, I never read the manpage from end to end :P
(though I read the webpage from end to end)

I think a link to https://github.com/petdance/ack would be fine at the
bottom of "how to install" (after all: from github it's also possible
to download an archive of the sources)

or either in a new "how to contribute" section

thank you again
