Subject: Digital Printing: Y or N?
We're just about to give a couple of digital printers a try with some
reprints.  If you've had any experiences with digital printers, were
you satisfied with the results?  How did the print and paper quality
compare to your regular offset printer's output?  And was the customer
service level about the same as what you're used to, or was it
different?

I did a digital print of a book that was previously printed offset and
went out of print. The digital version used the exact same PDF file,
but the type is thicker and the photos are much worse quality. The
author noticed and complained, repeatedly. We ended up going back and
printing more offset because of his complaints. I think digital might
be all right for books with only text, but I wouldn't do it again for
a book that has any images.

We just got the proofs from a reprint that we decided to do with
digital printing.  As you described, the photos were quite grainy by
comparison and the edges of objects in the image looked sort of
pixellated.  The paper also feels thinner and has a whiter color.

But in the interests of saving money, we're going to go ahead with
it.  And most readers are not going to have a copy of the original on
hand with which to make comparisons.

However, in the future, I think I'd agree with you and avoid the
digital option for a book with images.
