A friend wants bike insurance. Does anyone have this or know where to get it? Not insurance for racing, just regular bike insurance.

Farmers Insurance was at the Armadillo ride a couple of weeks ago.  I don't know if  what they have will work for your friend or even if it is a good value.

Cheers,
David S.

Do you mean like insurance against theft or damage?  If so, and if he is a home owner, his bike may already be covered under his home owner's policy.  My Santa Cruz Tallboy was nipped from the back of a vehicle a few years back and my home owner's insurance covered it, but I was out a heft deductible.  The bike was two weeks old so only having to pay the deductible was a deal at the time.  If the bike is valued at less than the deductible, a home owner's policy may not be the way to go.

Dinty,

I suggest your friend contact their Property and Casualty insurance agent.  This is the person who writes their home owners or renters insurance.  They should be able to add a  rider  to their policy for specific items of value, usually at a small cost.

Perhaps the question concerns insurance for liability, collision and major medical; just like motor vehicles?

I looked at the link someone provided.  As far as I could tell it provided a discount on bicycles and a subscription to a bicycling magazine - oh, and if you get a flat tire on the road, they'll come fix it.

That's a good point -- the question could cover a lot of different
things.

As I understand it, homeowner's/renter's policies often (usually?
always?) will cover liability issues for damage you are liable for
while riding your bicycle.

As for medical claims, your usual medical insurance will pay for your
medical bills like they will for any other medical issues you have --
however, they *will* go after another party if the other party is
responsible for your injuries.

I believe this can also work out to be strongly not in your favor --
if you are injured by a driver and have $30k of medical bills which
are paid for by your medical insurance, and then you settle with his
insurance company for all $30k of his minimum state insurance coverage
for your pain and suffering (or damage to your $10k bike) -- I think
your medical insurance company will want all that money.

Beyond that, if you also own a car and have insurance there, your PIP
coverage may also cover you if your injuries happen while riding a
bicycle.

Don't take my word for anything -- talk to your insurance company
about it.

A good summary of the issues seems to be here --

though it's not working. Try the cache instead --

Thanks for all the responses to my question of bike insurance. You brought
up more scenarios than I anticipated. I will forward the responses on to my
friend. If he gets a solution, I will share with all.

Once again, thanks.

Are you telling me that if you have medical insurance and you get hit by
a car, your medical insurance company will sue for you, and you don't
have to?

All policies are different and dependent on the individual policy language. Some homeowners (HO) policies will cover damages you cause with your bike, again dependent on the policy. Health insurance only covers some health issues and again dependent on the coverage you purchase.
Medical providers do seek reimbuirsement for health care costs caused by 3rd parties but with a good bike accident attorney, that can be nd negotiated and your recovery maximized, see http://www.cyclistlaw.com or http://bicycleaccidentattorney.net
