Hi all,
please look at the attached 2010 ride schedule file in our AR google
group files.

This is a tentative schedule for 2010, and I have to send this file to
the ACP by Oct 15, when I am also schedule to be on a plane with my
Bike Friday heading to Central America. As you will note we need only
ride dates and coordinator names at this time.

Some needs that we have that you should respond to me about:

- Give me suggested changes, additions to the rides. We will not be
putting actual ride names to the schedule until we complete the effort
around January.
- Will Charlene be around to coordinate Red Deer rides next year, and
if not should we have rides out of Red Deer and would someone else
like to coorinate these rides.
- We need a better ride coordinator for Calgary then Ken Myhre, he is
never here when we need him. Who else would volunteer to step to the
plate?
- Dave (MH) and Bill (Edm) always give me corrections for their rides,
hopefully you are both around.
- Willi has suggested a fleche for nexr year, and I have pencilled in
a date but you could change it.
- Does someone want to plan and coordinate a 1200?
- Stephen, is a hell week on tap for next year and if so what dates?.

I will be back from my fall ride Dec 15 and will work to pull an AGM
together in January when we can deal with all other matters.

thanks for our help,
Ken Myhre

Thanks Wim,
You do have to sign into the AR group to look at the files. My intention
was to make the changes to the file so everyone could see them as they go
together.

Hey Ken:

Thanks for doing this. I have no time to consider this in detail before
the weekend - I am off to the mountains in a couple of hours later
today. Will have a thorough review early next week and provide feedback.

Initial comments:

1. I like the routes around Red Deer, and would be willing to act as
Ride Coordinator for those - maybe for a series of 300, 400, 600 in the
spring.

2. I am willing to coordinate a Fleche in the spring.

Stay tuned for more comments early next week.

It's REALLY smoky here this morning ........................... and +13
still !

Ken - care top share more details about your South American cycling
adventures? Sounds like WOW to me ............

I'm off the bike due to a bad concussion and may not get back into
serious cycling. I can still coordinate a Hell Week for everyone. As
for timing it would be good to hear from members as to the dates of
their big rides. We try and plan Hell Week a month before the
majority of the big rides with the dates typically falling on the July
or August long weekends. Let me know, Hell Week was really good this
year, good group lots of fun.

I am planning for only one big ride, the Cascade 1200, It will be June
26 to 29 which asks for the Hell Week end of May. I would greatly
appreciate your involvement, it was really good this year.
Stephen, I am sorry to hear about the potential of not getting back
into serious cycling. Wouldn't it be good to share what happened so we
can learn for our safety?
All the best for your recovery,
Peter

After looking at the '10 schedule 2 things I notice. One is that we
seem to be starting the season earlier every year. Is there any good
reason for this? Second is that there is no rides after Hell Week.
Having a series in the summer during the best riding conditions makes
sense. Also, to possibly have some twos and threes after a 12 instead
of shutting down the season. Just my thoughts.

Greetings:

While I am not a ride coordinator for the Alberta brevets - I do organize them in th BC Peace for the BC Randonneurs - as a members I would like to add a few notes.

1. Overall schedule looks good

2. Fleche date looks fine, however I am wondering if the May long weekend coud be a possible date?

3. Regarding earlier discussions on the Fleche. Citing the BC rules and my experience at riding one of the BC Fleches, I 'd like to note that the Fleche can
basically start anywhere. It must however end at a common point of arrival (=finish). The "anywhere start" can also be the finish location, in which case the ride is
either (a) an "out and back" event; or (b) a 'circle route"

For practical reasons (cost and time) I would suggest a finish location which minimizes the travel time/cost for participants. A common departure/finish location
may therefore be desirable. As a possible participant for me a one way travel distance would be Edmonton (700); Red Deer (820): Calgary (970 km) and Jasper
(640 Km). I am wondering therefore if a Red Deer location might not be the most practical/central for most involved.

As far as the route is concerned, a modification of Charlene's Red Deer 400 km Brevet may be one of the route options ( we need at least 360 km)

4. Finally I am wondering if any thought can be given to a later in June date for a 600km Brevet. The Banff-Jasper-Banff (or the one in reverse) is one that would fit
quite nice in there.

Cheers,

Wim

Ken:

Can you move the Medicine Hat 600 km to June 19. While I did the 400
and 600 on back to back weekends this year it is probably not
something I would attempt each year. June 19 puts it on a weekend
where there are no other 600s also.

Thanks,
David

Good reaction so far...Some comments on the feedback

- I will write Dan in as Calgary coordinator.
- Willi will do the Flesche and we can all give our feedback in regard
to where and when
- I think Stephen's skull should be thick enough to handle a few more
concussions and so .. no quitting yet..
- It looks like Hell week may be end of May sometime.
- I can add summer brevets, but each time I do they go empty. How
about using the forum to look for riders as Dan did a few weeks ago.
- Still time for more feedback

Hello All:

Finally had a chance to look at the ride calendar that Ken has
proposed. Here are my comments.

I can take over as Ride Coordinator for Charlene's Red Deer brevets
series, and I would leave the dates exactly as Ken has proposed them. I
really like some of her routes, and will likely ride at least the 300
and 400 brevets there again next spring. Likely that no one else, or
very few, will ride the Red Deer series, so there should not be much
work involved. But, it would be good to keep them on the schedule, as
alternates for riders needing brevets at a particular distance if for
some reason they cannot ride their chosen brevets on the planned dates.

Would it be possible, when the time comes, for the 600 in the Red Deer
series to be planned to be ridden on the Banff-Jasper-Banff route? I
really liked that route last year, suspect that it would be better
training (climbing) than Charlene's Red Deer 600 route, and would likely
plan to ride it again myself. If we submit it as the BJB 600 right from
the start, there will be no dicey manouevering required with Paris!

RE the proposed Fleche:

May I suggest the weekend of May 29/30 as a Fleche date? I think May 15
may be a tad early in the year. Dave O. has requested a move for his
Medicine Hat 600 away from May 29/30, so no conflict there. May long
weekend is often not available for many people (including myself) due to
long-standing annual commitments on the first long weekend of the year.
I am willing to coordinate if people are interested. Red Deer / Sylvan
Lake seems like a reasonably central location for a Fleche - that can be
discussed later I suppose.

That's about it.

Still recovering from severe Achilles Tendonitis, but hoping to get
back, at least commuting, within the next several weeks.

Greetings:

Good comments Willi. One point that I wish to raise is that the Fleche-- according to ACP rules must be completed with a certain time period. (see BC website). The end of May would be beyond that, unless of course an agreement with Paris reached for an exception. Would the end of May not conflict with a now proposed Hell
Week at that time? Maybe the weekend of May 15 isn't so bad after all.

Thanks Willi for taking on these things. I think Wim is right. The end of
May may be a bit too far away from Easter for the Fleche, all else will be
fine.

Hi all,

I have attached the revised 2010 schedule with the changes you have
provided. I will send it to the ACP in the next few days, so if you catch
something fishy contact me right away.

I will work with Stephen to schedule an AGM, where we actually want people
to attend in person. This will be early January. In the meanwhile you can
be thinking about putting ride names to the dates we have settled on. I am
going to arbitrarily asked Peter to put together a draft proposal for our
Calgary rides, Dave will of course do MH, Bill Vandermeer Edmonton and Willi
Red Deer. I think the best process might be to send in the ride names to
Mike, who can build them into a web page that will be published, hopefully
after the AGM. If any of you have any requests for specific ride/dates, or
wish to design a new one, get them into the forum in the next couple of
months, so our co-oped volunteers can process them. Willi you might also
write up a proposal for how our fleche will proceed. I am sure you will get
good feedback from our forum on that one.

Willi asked about my next trip... Briefly I am flying into Cancun Oct 15
with a buddy and our Bike Fridays, returning Dec 15. We will do a rough
figure of 8 route through the Yucatan, Guatemala, Belize and a touch on
Honduras. We will ride about 4000 km, visit about 12 Mayan sites and hope
to see a few thousand unique birds, both feathered and not. Unfortunately
my website is "under redevelopment", and so you will have to come to the AGM
to hear about it.

Happy riding in your basements ... but I won't wish I was joining you,

I will have periodic email contact.

Hey Ken (and everyone else):

May I request a couple of date changes to the Red Deer Series? (to allow
personal planning of brevets around the May Long Weekend?).

Red Deer 400 - move from May 22 to May 29.

Red Deer 600 (hopefully the Banff-Jasper 600): move from June 5 to June 12.

That would be much appreciated.

Will work on getting together some Fleche details over the next month or so.

Thanks for this Ken.

Hi all,
I have attached the 2010 schedule here and updated the file in our google
group forum. Thanks for your help. This is the file I will send to ACP
now. I am leaving the snow shovelling to all of you and will be on the
plane tomorrow, feeling the tropical air as I ride south of Cancun by
Saturday.

It would be great if we could choose a time for our AGM (January) so that
Willi and possibly Bill from Edmonton could join us. Any thoughts Willi, I
know Bill is not on our forum.

Thanks, Ken. Have fun in the warmth!

I have shared this as a google-doc with all ride co-ordinators and
extended the scripts for the Web site so I can pull the schedule from

Hi Mike,

I think Dan agreed with Ken to be the Calgary ride coordinator for
the brevets that have me listed. I am not sure of my situation for
next spring, and will be willing to help out when I can. But I think
Dan volunteered to do this specific task.

Thanks,
