I am seriously considering to ride the MM200 on the scheduled date.
With an 8am start in Banff it is no hardship to leave Calgary early that morning.
Please let me know if you want to join me,
Peter

I am hoping to, but I bent the fork on the bike I would have used, so
it might depend a little on that...

Peter,

Joel and I are considering. I may bring some triathletes who want to use it for training for Ironman Canada. They have ABA insurance. What is our one ride club fee? In BC, it is $5.

Jeff,
the fee is $25 if ABA insurance can be proven. I need the paperwork and $$ at the start. If they do not have this they can still ride the route on their own terms.
Let me know if you, Joel and else are coming so we can meet ,
Cheers
Peter

Hi Peter,

I'm not sure that others will want to pay $25. I'll ask them. I haven't heard back from them yet. Joel and I plan to come. I may have another also. I plan to use it for training, as I'm doing the Raid Alpine in France in early Sept = 780 k in 6 days, 31 passes, 6>2000m, 16000m climbing from Antibes to Geneva. Should be fun to get in the Rockies again and then in the Alps.

Afterwards, I 'll be in nancy France for the World Dusathlon = 10k run, 40k cycle, 5 k run.

Joel and I may do a 200 on Sun also. I need to get some saddle time in !

I have an extra room booked in Banff if anyone from out of town needs it, otherwise I will let it go. = $130 total for 2 queens. Anyone else coming from out of town - please inform them if they have no room booked yet.

Jeff

We were out there with 4 Randonneurs (Jeff, Joel, Mike and myself) and 4 others on the course (Vonda, Gunnar, Alan and Rob).
I had 3 friends (Gunnar, Vonda, Rob) there, all of them trying to understand what a 200 km ride is all about.
Gunnar and Rob rode the whole ride with exception of the Mt. Norqauy at the end, Vonda in addition eliminated the climb to Takkakaw falls. All of them could have made the entire route on time. I hope some of them will join next year.

I met Jeff, Joel and Allen on my way up to the falls while they were decending. Later I met Mike in Lake Louise. It was a perfect day for a leisurly ride, decent temperature and modest winds, mostly helping us.

Also, Nancy Powell introduced herself to me as she was catching up on the way up to Mt. Norquay. She had the same Randoneeur shirt on and therefore recognized me and vice versa. She had been in Calgary, picking up a bike and stopping by at Stephen's house.

The Mt. Norquay climb is a sadistic way to finish off an already hilly ride! But it was indeed a perfect day for cycling, and the route was beautiful, with the exception of the construction zones on Hwy 1.

Beautiful day for a ride!

I also skipped the Norquay climb -- wasn't feeling the climbing on a
40x23 or whatever my road bike has -- not finishing the brevet, but
had a great day. I met a friend-of-a-friend I haven't seen in years
randomly doing one of his only bike-rides of the year near Baker Creek
and had some stranger in a sunfire hand up a Pilsner on the final
stretch of 1A back to Banff. Great stuff!

The construction west of Lake Louise is an absolute horror-show,
although a few bits you get to have fresh 2-lane blacktop to
yourself. My only flat of the day was just as I got up to motor-pacing
speed on this bit, with a semi pretty close behind. Minor excitement
getting the rig over to the side ;). There are two (relatively short)
bits where there is literally no room for other vehicles and one has
to "take the lane" (both 50km/h zones, in theory). On the plus side,
Vermillion Lakes is now connected via a nice paved pathway to the 1A
-- we should maybe change all the Banff-area brevets to use this
instead of the transcanada.

A couple notes we might add to the route sheet: there's (treated)
water at the walk-in campsite a 200m ride on dirt-paths further on
from the Takkakaw parking lot (with nice shady picnic tables, and a
view of the falls), and one can get water at West Louise Lodge right
at the summit of Kicking Horse (besides all the creeks). There's also
two campgrounds at the beginning of the Takkawaw falls road which
presumably both have potable water also (I didn't double check).

Cheers,

Some d-bag made a close, fast pass on me in that area...heaven forbid he get caught behind a cyclist for a couple hundred feet!

That wasn't as bad as the idiot who appeared to swerve towards us on 1A. I don't think he was trying to hands us beers!
