Hi all,

Any Edmonton riders been out on the roads yet? I haven't yet. The first ride is less than three weeks away! (Warburg 200) And there's more snow in the forecast. Better get out there while we can!

YES!

 

But not here.  Rather, in Victoria, where I was for Spring Break last week.

 

I rode in the Victoria Populaire 100 km (  http://www.randonneurs.bc.ca/victoria-populaire.html  ), and also did some solo rides on the Saanich Peninsula, where it was beautiful riding beside the ocean and up in the hills!

 

Can’t ride this weekend – back country ski trip.  Maybe next weekend if conditions permit.

 

Planning on riding the Warburg 200 on April 20^th – I’ll be slow!

Yes, I have been on the road in the country side North of Fort St. John. Still rather chilly, but feels good. Roads are clean, except for the odd gravel patch – watch y’r moves!! Looking at riding the Warburg 200.  My humble request: good weather.  Cheers,

Hi all,

 

No road riding yet. I was in Vegas for Spring Break and did not take my bike. Still doing spin 3 days per week with the Cycle Logic group. I plan to ride the Warburg 200 and have many interested from the tri group. Will new riders be able to sign up on ride morning? I am encouraging them to go to the web site and mail in registration and proof of ABA insurance. I suspect if bad weather on the day, many will not show other than the vets! I still have to put my bike together after the Alp tour last fall!

Riders can bring their registrations with signed disclaimer and payment to the first ride. I would prefer that people mail it in, but I will be able to collect it at the Warburg ride.

Note that our (new) club rules will allow us to delay a ride by a week if the weather is really crummy (ride coordinator's discretion), but it's an all-or-nothing situation - everyone rides on the same day.

The current forecast is for 10-15 cm of snow in Edmonton on Saturday. Only 1 week to the first ride!

Where to meet:

Last time we met in the south-east corner of the Superstore parking lot, near the Red Robin on the corner of 170 St and 100 Ave. It's a bit of a tricky location which is surrounded by one-way streets - I find it's best to come at it from the west (178 st).

At that time of day (assuming 07:00 start), it will be easy to spot the lonely crazies with their bikes in the parking lot.

Call is for 1/2cm snow Fri night, so whoever shows has to decide if safe to ride Sat am - re Warburg 200. Let's be common sensible and if it is unsafe, one should not ride. Snow or ice on the shoulder is a no go for me. The call is for 6C with real feel of 3C and 15kph winds from the north. Not the best spring riding! But maybe better than calgary's forecast?

In the past, we started from the NW corner of the Superstore - easiest in and out. 

I may show, not sure if I'll ride if unsafe. We and ACP should be reasonable if snow cancels the ride.

Thanks  for relaying the concern.  Allow me a couple of observations. First, the forecast call for 30% POP,  and AIR temperature around the freezing mark.  Second, forecasts can and do change the better or worse. Third, one can dress  for wind, temperatures and precipitation. Fourth, the asphalt has already absorbed so much heat that a bit of snow or flurries won't accumulate on the black heat sink. It will simply melt upon impact. Fifth, this past Sunday we rode 100 km in Fort St. John at -6C to +2 C, north wind 15-21 kph,  windchill -12 up to 0 C as well as flurries and snow. No accumulation, it all melted. Cold yes, did we dress for it, yes.  Did we suffer, no.  Would I ride again in those conditions, yes. Was the road slippery, not at all. Finally, I drove in from FSJ today and even around Whitecourt where they got 29 cm on Sunday the road were clear to ride on In the last few years we have successfully cycled the Camrose 200 under somewhat similar conditions.  Notwithstanding that, always keep an eye on the weather,

 My only concern is memories of riding with slush on the road - developed very heavy 'ice' disc wheels. The breaks and derailleurs iced up, so rode a 'one' gear bike. Started =yes, finished=yes, suffered=yes. I was young n energetic. Have done these rides for 26 seasons not counting 2013. I guess I'm just less inclined to risk as my family n patients still need me to be functioning. 

I dont worry about the cold! I have enough brown fat to keep me warm - hah!

I truly worry about others, cars n safety of the shoulder. If the shoulders are clear = great. If not, I won't ride. 

Let's hope for clear roads

I know it is still VERY early in the spring brevet season, but I am interested to know if anyone is planning to ride the Edmonton-based Super Series in 2013?

 

I am planning to ride the complete series as scheduled in order to qualify for The Big Wild Ride in Alaska in July.

 

Interested to know if I will be riding 300 – 400 – 600 solo?

 

RE: 600

 

The ‘northern option’ is scheduled as Edmonton – Calgary – Edmonton (specifically Leduc – Airdrie – Leduc)

 

The ‘southern option’ is scheduled as Airdrie – Leduc – Airdrie.

 

So, both routes are currently designed to be ridden counter-clockwise, and even though Calgary riders will be much faster than I am, there is likely little chance of meeting (i.e. being ‘overtaken’) enroute.

 

Any desire to have one route go clockwise, and the other counter-clockwise, thereby presenting two opportunities to ‘meet’ enroute?

 

Having said that, my preference is to ride counter clockwise from Leduc, reaching Airdire at km 373, having a short sleep there (having ridden more than half), then finishing up.

 

Any thoughts?

I plan to ride the 300, but not the 4 nor 600. I do plan a super series for 2014 and 2015 in prep for PBP 2015. For the 600 this year, in the past when I set the courses - Edm was ccw and Clgy was cw, so u meet twice on route but u can be separated by many lanes on #2! jeff
