I would like to remind parents of young children about the MAS Young Birder's Club and some of the activities. They meet at Drumlin Farm Sanctuary monthly[not Dec & the summer] in Lincoln Ma. Note we also have a very active Chickadee Club of 8 Yr old to 11 yr old who do many fun birding adventures.
Nov 15th twelve young birders[ages 11 to HS seniors] headed to Great Bay in NH and the NH coastline. We were treated to 12 species of ducks, Wht-rumped Sandpipers, Horned Larks and a large flock of Snow Buntings.
In Oct, the children had a sleepover and banded 4 Saw-whet Owls as the main birding experience. As one could imagine, these children were blown away with the whole evening of learning about the owls and releasing them back to the wild after weighing, measuring and checking molt.
This Jan. our children will divide up into a few teams and compete in the Superbowl of Birding. This competition is a great event and in the past, the children have won some of the several categories each year. The children led by a top birder on each team cover from Nahant to PI in an effort to find "Seeker Birds" or accumulate points of rare & common species. We end the day with a pizza party at Joppa Flats WS and hope for the best in the competition.
If any children would be interested in joining the Young Birders or the Chickadee Club, contact Becky Gilles at Drumlin Farm[781-259-2223] for information. It is great to see the enthusiasm and interest these children have as well as the bonding that has developed.
