Dons take innovative approach to on field sinners
In response to the disciplinary record this season, and to demonstrate the clubs acceptance of the players and managements role in maintaining a high level of discipline on the field, Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee has introduced a new system of punishment at Pittodrie.
Mark McGhee said: "As a manager I have never operated a system of fiscal punishment. I do however believe that we have to support the authorities in cleaning up our game and improving discipline on the field of play.
"I've never been a manager who felt it was fair to fine players money. I don't think we have any right to do that. I felt we had to come up with something that is strong on the players, but also gives a little something back as well.
"With this objective in mind I have introduced a system of fines based on the players own private time. It has the full backing of the players. The system will be a 'Work in the Community' exercise which will require the players to participate where required in projects in the greater community.
"I don't want people to misunderstand what I'm saying. We're not about to send players out to dig up roads and sweep the streets, but players will be asked to give up an increasing amount of their own time - based on a first caution, red card, first suspension, second suspension and so on.
"I've spoken to our 'Dons in the Community' department as well as our commercial team who are in touch with the police and other organisations throughout the city.
"If there's a situation where, for instance, they have something on (like a coaching session or a seminar) and they think one of our players could help them then the player who's had a red or yellow card will go along.
"We don't want suspensions as has been the case on five or six separate occasions already this season. So we've decided to try to put down a strong message to show we're supporting the authorities.
"I feel strongly that it's a two way street, obviously the authorities have a responsibility to the referee, but we as clubs have a responsibility to make sure our players are doing everything they can to play within the laws of the game.
"It won't be retrospective punishment. It will come in to force for tomorrow's game with Hamilton.
"It's important to remember that this is extra work on top of what they already do for the Community and Commercial departments at the club. There are many different player appearances organised by marketing team each week."

But it’s not really the case that only one of them have been justified.
The ref at the Motherwell game had no option but to send Gary McDonald off given the law regarding his offence specifically states that a player must be cautioned for covering his head with his shirt during a goal celebration.
In fact, under the laws of the game, they are probably all justified.
Not sure what to make of punishing players by making them do more work in the community and interact with the fans though.
I also do think for moments of complete stupidity like Jerel Ifil’s sending off at Parkhead last week, the club should be taking a lot stronger action than making him visit schools and hospitals or whatever else.
gs we weren't. McGhee said that we needed all our players to play well in order to beat them.... it was obvious that was not the case. Thought Ross, Paton, Aluko and McDonald had stinkers, together with Maguire, Mugrew and Foster not really doing much. Pawlett was huffing and puffing without doing much, Kerr was ineffective, Foster and Considine failed when called upon. Miller was trying but nothing really came off for him. Grassi provided next to nothing when he came on (I'd have put him at left back and moved Mulgrew forward but I dunno if it would've made a difference). Everyone shouting for 4-4-2 and players in their rightful positions.... well today McGhee did that but his players let everyone down big time. One shot on target where the keeper had a save to make (and even then I think it was probably going over), other than our goal.... that stat says it all. These players think they are better than they actually are. There was no fight, no belief and no desire to win today. How many times have we seen that?? These days outside of the old firm club’s budgets for playing staff seem to be pretty small. Or at least the *difference between them* is very little. And the difference is really negligible when every team is looking at bottom of barrel scrapings to cobble together into a team. So I hear the cry for consistent application in every game. There is not enough ‘class’ to carry us through any games any more. Any decent players have flown south for the cash.
Being a footballer is still a privileged position and if getting some players out into the community more often helps them to realize that then all good with me. What stinks slightly is that it is being seen as punishment i.e. you have been a bad boy so you must speak to fans.
We need more grafters at the club for sure. There’s no point in working hard in training then not turning up on the Saturday.

But
that's my point Brian... there's really not much to chose between any team in
the SPL this season. If a side gets 11 players, plugging away, are organised,
fighting tooth and nail..... then they'll be hard to beat. Hamilton were better
than us today - it's as simple as that. We had no one in our team who
overshadowed any of their players.

MARK McGhee today insisted the Red Army were right to jeer his Aberdeen FC players after their Pittodrie shocker.
The Aberdeen FC team left the field to a chorus of boos after losing 2-1 to Hamilton.
And McGhee insists the criticism makes him even more determined to get it right against Hibs at Pittodrie on Saturday.
He said: “We deserved to be booed. The fans came to Pittodrie on the back of our win over Rangers expecting us to do something.”
| Ryan Jack plays central midfield and looks a cracking prospect. If it had not been for a couple of bad injuries I reckon he would of made a few appearances for the first team by now. --- On Mon, 14/12/09, Nigel Hird <nh...@aberdeencity.gov.uk> wrote: |
