There are several causes for this. One is the change to the NHL, the
world's premier hockey league, where the U.S. is now in control. Even
through in the U.S, hockey is only a third tier professional team
sport, and cannot even secure a profitable network TV contract, the
Americans wanted control and they have got it.

It used to be that Canada was the world's dominant hockey nation and
claimed to have invented the game as its own. But that boast is now in
dispute as both the U.S. and some European nations claim to have first
developed
the game. But who really gives a shit?

At one time almost all the players in the NHL were Canadians but now
there seems to be as many European
and American players forming a majority in the league.

The decline of hockey in Toronto has also hurt the nation's pre-
eminence in the sport. Toronto's Leafs have not
won a Stanley Cup for 42 years and recently have made an awful
showing. Pretty soon I believe that the leafs
will stop drawing sold- out crowds at the ACC as many fans are giving
up and becoming disillusioned. Other
Canadian based NHL clubs are doing a little better but not much. When
is the last time a Canadian team went to
the Stanley Cup finals?

In international play Canada's teams usually do well, still they are
not dominant like they once were. Even though
in the history of the Winter Olympics I believe Canada has won the
gold medal only twice.

The Toronto media is doing its part, however, to keep hockey healthy
in the area. Even in the summer months
when the Leafs are not playing you will often find four or five pages
in the newspapers devoted to hockey with the Blue Jays' baseball team
barely mentioned. The Argonauts and Raptors also get very poor
coverage.

There will, however,l be full pages devoted to hockey player trades
and profiles not just of the leafs but of the San Jose Sharks, Tampa
bay Lightning whatever. I often ask myself who the fuck would read
that
junk.

In spite of this media coverage of hockey people like me, who are
interested only in NFL football and ML baseball, cannot name one
fucking player on the current Leaf team now that Mats Sundin is gone.

The Leafs have blown their games and you call this a decline in hockey?

Give it a rest.

Hockey is Canada's game.

It sure as hell isn't baseball.

Didn't the Jays just come off another great losing season where they
garnered crowds of less than 15,000?

Besides, baseball isn't even America's sport anymore. It's mostly
played by outsiders and has been in steep decline since the strike
years of 1994.

Baseball isn't played by athletes, it's played by juiced up steroid
crazed fat boys whose nuts have shrunk to the size of olives because
of drug abuse..

Why not just admit it, Lambourn, you like NFL football because it has big
beefy guys in tight spandex, and ML baseball because of its policy of "don't
ask, don't tell." If there were any openly gay NHL stars you'd be able to
name the entire roster of every team.

YOU LIE!!!

52.0 per cent of the NHL is Canadian born, f
19.9 per cent American,
6.9 per cent Czech,
5.9 per cent Swedish
4.4 per cent Finnish.

For those who don't know, John "Crap Detector" Lambourn is an
intellectually lazy blowhard, too sloppy to take 30 seconds to fact
check his bullshit before pressing send. After spending decades
spinning his bullshit to other drunks from his barstool in the local
Legion pub, Mr. Lamburn has found himself unable to adapt to an
inernet audience that has fact-checking tools at its fingertips.

Consequently Mr. Lambourn aspends a most of his time in this newsgroup
exposing himself for the dishonest gasbag that he really is -- pulling
"facts" out of his ass, and accusing anyone who exposes his inaccuracy
as a "socialist," even if the conversation is about sports.

Think of Mr. Lambourn as a combination of Deputy Barney Fife from
Mayberry and Cliff the blowhard mailman on Cheers.

You are off by a factor of 250%, historically speaking. Canada's
Men's Olympic Hockey Team appeared in 17 Olympic Games over the years
and took home a total of 13 medals.

- Canada captured the GOLD medal seven times -- in 1920, 1924, 1928,
1932 (they are the only team ever to win 4 Gold medals in 4 successive
Games - 1920 to 1932), 1948, 1952, and (exactly 50 years later), won
the Gold medal by defeatiing the USA in the 2002 Winter Games.

- Canada won the SILVER medal in 1936, 1960, 1992 and 1994.

- They took the BRONZE medal in 1956 and 1968.

- Woman's Hockey first entered the Winter Olympics in 1998. Canada has
won 3 Olympic medals. The Canadian Woman's Olympic Hockey Team won the
SILVER medal in 1998. In the Salt Lake Games of 2002, the Canadian
Women's team won GOLD, beating the USA team and they again won Gold in
Turino in 2006 over the Swedish team.

Lambourn -- you sit there, your brain besotted by alcohol, pulling
inaccutate sports trivia out of your ass and presenting it to the
newsgroup as fact. Your mental habits are simply too sloppy for you
to be bothered to spend 60 seconds and checking your facts -- having
spent an entire lifetime as a habityal, compulsive liar, you see no
shame in dropping a couple more whoppers on the table.

You seem to be confused, old man. You start off by saying that
Europeans and Americans care enough about hockey to be challenging
Canada's claim as the birthplace of the sport... and then suddenly
explain this dispute by saying "Nobody gives a shit."

Perhaps you should give the booze a pass for a day or twoi until your
head clears, if that's even possible any more.

People like you are perpetually confused about just about EVERYTHING
-- which is why you can't keep your story straight and continually
contradict yourself in the nessgroup from one day to the next, and why
you claim that Canada has only one tow gold medals for hockey when the
real number is seven, and which is why you claim that the majority of
NHL payers are not Canadian when, in fact, the majority ARE Canadian.

You probably can't name your own border collie until you've had your

Where did you get these statistics? There are many Russian-born
players in the NHL and they are not even mentioned above.
Another point I neglected to make. Hockey has not caught on
internationally as a spectator sport. Even in series with Canadian
teams played in Russia the attendance is very poor. Hockey is just a
fringe sport to the Russians.
It was thought in 1980 with the "Miracle on Ice" Olympic championship
game in which a team of American amateurs defeated the Soviets for the
gold medal, which Canadian pros could not do, that hockey would catch
on in
the U.S. but it didn't happen,

It is disgusting and completely irrational today that moronic Toronto
Leaf fans will still pay big money to see those bums play at the ACC.
And then have the Toronto newspapers fill four or five pages with shit
that they call hockey news. Who the fuck would read that crap? Only
imbeciles like David Reilley if he lived in the Toronto area.

They are available online witthin 60 seconds to anyone with half a
brain and a committment to accuracy -- you appear to have failed both
these tests.

If you took a second to add the numbers you would see that they do not
add up to 100% -- the Russians are currently less than 4%, and I cut
off the list at that point.

This is where your phoniness comes in and the inconsistencies in your
"angry Grandpa" wandering mind become obvious.

You have spent the past 15 years pretending to be a champion of
marketplace economics -- a point of view rooted - philosophically --
in the notion of the "wisdom of the marketplace." And yet, as soon as
the marketpkace supports something that you personally don't like, you
toss out the notion of "marketplace wisdom" and replace it qwith
"marketplace irationallity," and you are so clueless you don't seem to
be even aware that you have just contradicted the philosophical
foundation of of what you pretend to stand for.

In the end you are way too much a narcissist to actually stand for
anything except your own whims -- and most of the time your central
whim is to stand on your front porch in your whiskey-stained
housecoat, shaking your fist at the schoolchildren walking by on the
public sidewalk out front while yelling "You bastards get the hell off
my lawn!!"

You are a drunk old crackpot, and almost everything you write in this
newsgroup provides further evidence for this conclusion.

Look, Deilley, I could not care less what you think.
But I stated that Toronto is in a state of moral, social and economic
decline. Toronto also has a shitty hockey team. And hockey just cannot
cut it as a first- tier major league sport and it is fading in
Canada.
The market is the determining factor in all of these occurrences. The
Toronto media, which continues to cover hockey like it is Canada's
gift to the world of sports and that hockey is the world's most
important
ML team sport is out of touch with reality.

And the market fills the Maple Leaf home games... sold out every
game. So what's in decline: the hockey business in Toronto, or your
inability to be consistent about the wisdom of the marketplace. One
day you argue that everything should be left to the invisible hand,
and the next day you are arguing with the invisible hand. Yoiu sound
like a confused old man who doesn't really understand the proinciples
behind his shallow sloganeering. You are a lightweight.

YOU LIE!!!!

There are no sports media in Canada that are stupid enough to believe
that "hockey is the world's most important ML team sport." You are
making things up (and I challenge you to prove otherwise) because YOU
are out of touch woith reality.

Toronto's sports reporters treat hockey like it is a sport that is
very impoortant to the Toronto marketplace (a marketplace that is
unaffected by YOUR crackpot views), but there is not a sports
journalist in this country that believes "hockey is the world's most
important ML team sport," and it is a lie for you to claim otherwise.

You're just a crazyman, Ross Lambourn.

This is a sign of how infantile Lambourn has become as his alcohol-

small child thinks about the world.

We've all seen adults like this -- usually perched on a stool in a pub

moral, political -- as the cumulative toll of years and years of
alcohol abuse becomes ever more obvious in your irrational and self-
