Learn what you can do to combat human trafficking.
State Department specialist, Abraham Lee, will speak to audience members on the critical human rights issue of human trafficking.
What is Human Trafficking:
Human trafficking is the modern day practice of slavery. Also known as trafficking in persons, human trafficking comprises the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, based on the recruitment, harboring, and transportation of people solely for the purpose of exploitation. Every year traffickers generate billions of dollars in profits at the expense of victimizing millions of people around the world.
Victims of human trafficking are people forced or coerced into labor or sexual exploitation. Labor trafficking is widespread in variety of situations that encompass domestic servitude and small-scale labor operations, to large-scale operations such as farms, sweatshops, and major multinational corporations. Sex trafficking is one of the most lucrative sectors regarding the illegal trade in people, and involves any form of sexual exploitation in prostitution, pornography, bride trafficking, and the commercial sexual abuse of children. Under international law, any sexually exploited child is considered a trafficking victim, even if no force or coercion is present.
An estimated 17,500 foreign nationals are trafficked annually in the United States alone. The number of US citizens trafficked within the country is even higher. An estimated 200,000 American children are at high risk for trafficking into the sex industry each year.

Ever wonder why there are so many divisions within the minority community on campus? Why specific groups tend to stick to themselves? What causes such division and what drives us to identify with a specific group? If you find yourself wondering these questions, join KSA & AASU in their dialogue on these issues!
"The AASU & KSA is hosting a roundtable discussion about 'Division Among Minorities.' We will be discussing identity issues, acculturation vs. assimilation, and social aspects of division among 1st generation, 1.5 generation immigrants and 2nd generation minority Americans.
We open this discussion to all minorities for everyone had the same struggles and concerns about identity issues and finding a balance between keeping your values from your heritage versus acculturating to the values of American Society.
Accompanied with the discussion are two guest speakers--Professor Robert Ramsey (Department of East Asian Languages) and Dr. Mar (Asian American Studies) who will provide their professional expertise and comments. Setting Captives Free - Monday, April 26 8PM @ Stamp PG Room
You are invited to a discussion on how college students can fight the illegal sex-trafficking trade around the world, in the United States, and in our own backyard. The focus of this discussion will be about the current movement of combating sex-trafficking globally, domestically, and locally and what college students can do to contribute the end of sex-trafficking.We will be hearing from representatives of three non-profit organizations that focus on ending human-trafficking: International Justice Mission, Not for Sale, and Courtney's House.
Seesaws Against Slavery - From Wednesday, April 28th 5PM until Thursday, April 29th 5PM @ Hornbake Plaza
You've seen these seesaws on Hornbake Plaza before, right? This is a way for UMD students to help young women escape sex trafficking and other abusive situations across the world. We will be seesawing for those who can't, for those who have had their childhood stolen from them. This is a great way to raise money and awareness for this cause.
