Welcome back to school! I hope move-in went smoothly and everyone was
able to wake up for their classes this morning. As always, there are

1. Freshmen Welcome
Come out to La Plata Beach on September 8th from 3-6 PM! Come on out
to see UMCP's APA orgs and what they have to offer this year! This is
a fantastic opportunity for new students to learn about the different
APA organizations on campus as well as to make new friends within the
APA community.
We'll also be having a lot of fun activities throughout the event, so
stop by if you can to meet the AASU eboard along with other members
and eboard members in the APA community!

2. OMSE’s Unity Welcome
The Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education is hosting the annual
Unity Welcome on Thursday, September 30, 2010. The Unity Welcome
provides an opportunity to welcome and introduce the campus community
to the wide range of multi-ethnic student organizations on campus and
the resources and opportunities for academic, personal, and
professional development within the OMSE office in a social and
festive manner. During Unity Welcome there is a multicultural resource
fair and performances from fraternities, sororities and other cultural
organizations on campus.

3. ESOL Conversation Program Seeks Volunteers & Students
Join the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Conversation
Program. This program helps international students improve their
English speaking and pronunciation. An English-speaking volunteer
leader meets weekly with a small group of international students to
discuss world customs, university life, and current events for ninety
minutes. Group leaders may also teach English pronunciation, idioms,
and vocabulary. One-on-one meeting sessions with a speaking partner
may be selected as well. All sessions take place on campus and begin
on September 27 and end on December 3. No prior teaching experience
is necessary and no foreign language knowledge is needed. To
participate, you must pre-register and attend an information &
registration session during the week of September 7 to September 15.

4. SAALT Introduces Lead the Change 2010!
On the occasion of our 10th anniversary, SAALT is proud to introduce a
new leadership development event that provides community members with
skills and resources to become effective community leaders for social
change. This year, we are offering this initiative in two locations:

Lead the Change
Washington, DC San Francisco, CA
Sunday, October 3, 2010
Lead the Change will offer South Asian activists, advocates, and
allies the opportunity to engage with leaders in their communities and
participate in workshops to build skills in the arenas of
communications, project management, organizing, and public speaking.
Lead the Change is open to Be the Change volunteers as well as all
community members. Registration will begin on August 6th!
Be the Change 2010
Be the Change is a national day of service, coordinated by South Asian
Americans Leading Together (SAALT), that is held on campuses and in
cities across the country. The event is based on Mahatma Gandhi's
inspirational quote, "You must be the change you wish to see in the
world," and provides opportunities for South Asians to give back to
their communities. In 2009, almost 3,000 people contributed 6000
service hours in 70 cities and campuses across the country.
Want to Join the Movement?
Host a Be the Change event in your city or on your campus on Saturday,
October 2nd by signing up here! Check out all the cities and campuses
that have already joined the movement!
Our core cities this year are: Washington DC, New York City, San Jose,
San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia. We also
welcome other cities to hold Be the Change events.

5. Latino Heritage Month Call for Programs 2010
Each year the Multicultural Involvement & Community Advocacy Unit
publishes a University calendar of events to commemorate Latino
Heritage Month. Observed on campus from mid-September to mid-October,
this celebration reflects on the experiences and acknowledges the
contributions of persons of Latino or Hispanic descent. Now is an
excellent time to begin thinking about programming for this year’s
upcoming Latino Heritage Month. The month will focus on Latino and
Hispanic traditional and non-traditional fields such as politics,
community issues and performing arts. We invite you to join in the
University celebration of Latino Heritage Month by sponsoring
lectures, programs or activities. We encourage you to be creative in
identifying topics for programs that relate to your particular
community, organization or mission.
The planning for the month is on-going, thus if you would like to
share ideas and/or be an active participant in the planning, we
welcome you to join us at weekly meetings Tuesday's at 5:30pm, Room
1132, The Stamp (ending Sept. 14, 2010).
