I'm interviewing for a marketing position at a museum after previously
working at a non-profit. SInce I'm new to the industry,I'd appreciate
some advice on where to look for salary surveys. Thank you.

The Museum Association of New York (MANY) does one. It's not just NYC
(where salaries might be slightly higher). It costs $30 for members.

Hello, museum salary surveys may or may not help you. You should be looking
at the operating budget of the museum to which you want to apply; learn
something about the level of this position and who it reports to, etc. Also
check out the 990 (tax form) of the organization which is public information
to see the 5 top salaries within the organization, etc. This will give you
some clues as to salary levels. All best, Geri

Some 990s are google-able and a few museums have them on thir website - not many. A colleague in development who has this access through the Foundation Center could look it up for you, too. Call also and ask for one - 990s are public information after all. If an org publishes an annual report they usually include financial information. Be savvy and patient. You can always contact me if you need further assisttance. All best, Geri

If you are not sure how to get a hold of an institution's 990 forms, here is one way (there may be others, but this is the one I know of):

Make an account with Guide Star at http://www2.guidestar.org/ Once you have an account, you can conduct a non-profit search in their extensive database. When the institution you are researching populates, there are several tabs of information you can access, one of which says "Forms 990 and Docs."

Best of luck to you!
Crystal

You can view any non-profit’s 990’s through Guidestar. Just sign up for an account! http://www2.guidestar.org/

California Association of Museums also offers a salary survey. http://www.calmuseums.org/e-news/index.html#2008survey
