Hi there,

I was wondering if there were any Seattle EMPs out there who might be
interested in getting together to talk about general museum issues and
ones relative to the Seattle area. I'll be relocating to the Seattle
area from Boston in July and am excited to get started in the museum
profession there.

I've volunteered at museums here in Boston and am finishing up my last
class in a couple of weeks for my masters in Museum Studies. I don't
have a ton of professional experience in museums yet, but I would love
to share what I've learned in my classes and will hopefully be
learning in a museum in the Seattle area soon! I've met some really
great people in the museum community here and would like to do the
same in Seattle.

Thanks!
Amanda

Hi Amanda & other Puget Sound area folks--

I'm glad you wrote, as I was going to post the same query. It's nice to see all this movement for local EMP groups!

I'd love to find out if there's already an EMP group out here, and if not, if anybody would like to work together on starting one. I just moved to Seattle this past fall after a lifetime in New York, and just started at Tacoma Art Museum about a month and a half ago, so am still getting adjusted to the area and to my new museum community.

A couple other good networking resources out here that already exist: MEPS, the Museum Educators of Puget Sound, if you're in education; and the Puget Sound chapter of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN), which is just now getting off the ground and has their kick-off event coming at the end of this month. Feel free to email me directly for more info.

Cheers,
Courtney

Thanks, Courtney for the input about YNPN! I will definitely check
that out! I'm moving to Seattle in July and would love to work
together with other professionals on an EMP group in the Seattle
area. We'll keep in touch and see if anyone else is interested in
putting together a group as well.

Best,
Amanda

Hi Amanda and Courtney,

I will be moving to Seattle in July as well where I will begin an
internship. I am graduating in June from JFKU in Museum Studies. I
know of at least one other JFKU person in the area. It would be great
to meet up and get a group going!

Thanks!

Hi Katie,

Nice to meet you! Congrats on finishing up your degree in Museum
Studies! We should definitely get a group together once we're all in
the area.

I was curious what our fellow Seattle EMP-ers would think about
starting a blog or website to post events, conference/seminar
information, interesting museum articles, etc. I can easily setup a
blog and wouldn't mind doing that within the next month. I'm
finishing up my last semester of classes right now so I have about
another week of classwork to finish, but I would have the time after
that to do some research on what would be the best venue to post
Seattle EMP information online for everyone in the area.

Does anyone here have any suggestions on what would be a good venue to
use online or what other information we could post?

Thanks!
Amanda

Hi Seattlites Present and Future!
I think this is a great idea, and I also want to encourage you to connect with the Museology Program at the University of Washington.  If you'll be around next Thursday and Friday (May 22-23), please join us for the Museology Program's Second Annual Conference, "Transforming Museums!"

We'll have presentations from grad students, faculty, and museum professionals, including Judy Rand, Liz Sevcenko, Randi Korn, and Reed Stevens, and some excellent half-day workshops from Randi Korn, Douglas Worts, and Ron Chew.  Registration is free, and tickets to half day workshops are only $50.  It takes place at Hotel Deca and some local museums, fun fun!

We'll also have a reception on Thursday evening at Seattle Art Museum at which we'll present the Transforming Museums Award to Paul Martin, Vice President of Exhibits at the Science Museum of Minnesota, for "RACE Are We So Different?"  Tickets are only $25 and include light hors d'oeuvres and one drink ticket.

We still have room in our Friday poster session, so please submit at poster at the link below!

Please register online and see detailed information at:
http://www.transformingmuseums.org

If you have questions, please contact our committee at mus...@u.washington.edu!

Hi Shana,

Connecting with the program at University of Washington is a great
idea! I'm putting together a Seattle EMP blog and will give you the
web address as soon as I have it up and running. I'm currently
putting it together along with some ideas on how to get a group of
Seattle EMPs together through events, etc. Unfortunately, I'm not
moving to Seattle until July, so I will miss the "Transforming
Museums" conference, but please keep me updated on conferences,
seminars, speakers, etc. that are a part of the program!

We'll keep in touch and get the Museology Program included into the
Seattle EMP group!

Thanks!

Hi Seattle EMPs! For all those interested, we now have a blog at
www.seattle-emps.blogspot.com and we're also on Facebook as the
Seattle / Washington Emerging Museum Professionals Connection.
Events, conferences, seminars, and other discussion topics will be
posted at both the website and on the Facebook group. Also, please
feel free to post jobs, internships, and any other information
relevant to museum topics in the Washington state area!

Hope all of you have a great Memorial Day weekend!

Amanda
