          This position involves work that is highly professional in nature. It involves working with teachers and school groups, developing educational materials and programs, conducting educational programs, conducting tours, and other duties regarding interpreting the historic Old Capitol and its three main focus areas of history, civics, and historic preservation.  Incumbent works under the general supervision of a director; however, incumbent may have supervisory responsibilities in his/her section.

Essential Functions

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  1. Research, develop, and promote educational tours suitable for the various types of groups the Old Capitol attracts, i.e. elementary, high school, college, adult, disabled, and other special tours

  2. Develop pre-visit materials for school groups coordinated with school curriculum

  3. Prepare and present programs to school and community groups

  4. Develops schedules for volunteers and assigns workloads

Other duties include, but not limited to:

  1. Operate reception desk

  2. Answer switchboard

Education and experience must meet one of the following criteria:

•        Master’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university

•        Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university and one (1) year of related experience

Special qualifications: The required degree must be in history, southern studies, museum studies, English, communication, or public relations. The required experience must be in teaching, events planning or program coordination with an academic institution, historical organization, agency or museum.

Contract Registrarial Clerk, US Capitol, Washington, DC

 

Contract Registrarial Clerk

This position is part of a 2-person team for a competitive bid for a conservation survey of furniture at the US Capitol in Washington, DC.  Clerk will work with a conservator to record statistical and condition information in hard copy and/or laptop computer.  Project is tentatively scheduled for the first three weeks of August, with possible extensions in October and November if needed, but exact schedule is subject to change.  Work days are anticipated to be Monday - Friday, 9 AM – 4 PM, with ½ hour for lunch, for a 6 ½ hour work day.  Team will move from room to room in a rapid manner locating and surveying historic furniture.  Project may also involve transcription of hard copy to computer off-site at the Clerk’s own facility.

Required skills:  Familiarity with historic objects and collections terminology.  Excellent typing speed and accuracy.  Neat and efficient handwriting.  Good working knowledge of Word 2003 or later.  Ability to work effectively in informal and temporary facilities.  Reasonable physical endurance, and ability to walk a number of miles each day while working on one’s feet.  Must be located within daily commuting distance of US Capitol or have one’s own lodging in Washington, DC.  Great opportunity for a recent museum studies graduate or an intern to gain experience in an important historical collection.

The responsibilities of the Curatorial Research Assistant position include:

Conducting curatorial research for Museum, ATSU/KCOM staff, faculty, and the general public.  This involves talking and/or corresponding with researchers from around the world to determine their interests and needs; identifying research resources; making judgments about scope and timing of assistance; handling reference services, including usage policies, reproduction requests, and fees; overseeing use of the reading room. 

Assisting Curator with donations.  This includes preparing and tracking gift lists and donor correspondence; maintaining donor records; cleaning and storing new acquisitions.

Assisting Curator with collections care.  This involves maintaining collections records; doing data entry for computerized inventory; monitoring status of stored artifacts; overseeing cleaning of storage areas. 

Conducting inventory of Museum collections. This involves combining three collections into one numbering system and placing this information into a computer program. Basic computer skills and digital/scanning skills are required.  This is a very detail oriented job; you will be researching past accession records and placing this information along with new information into the system.  This is an extensive task and you will work closely with the Curator.

Working as part of a close-knit team.  Because we are a small staff with a large scope of activities, everyone is both a specialist and a generalist.  Staff members take individual responsibility for their own areas but also work collectively on group needs and fill in for other staff as needed, especially with public functions (front desk, etc.).

Knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word (2007), Adobe Photoshop, Omni page, and Past Perfect preferred.

The position requires patience, creative problem-solving skills, discretion, integrity, initiative, and attention to detail.  It also requires the ability to lift and carry artifacts and boxes (approx. 40 lbs. max.) short distances and to stand on a ladder at times.

Create mission-related content for workshops; manage teachers and oversee workshops, while assisting teachers as needed. Expand reputation of excellence through innovative and original educational programs.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidate will have a Bachelors' degree in museum studies, (Master's Degree preferred), arts education, and three years'

experience managing museum quality education department or as a senior member of a museum education team is preferred.
