Hello All,

I am a volunteer docent at a local American History museum in Virginia
and I am charged with creating a Gallery Guide for my museum. The
guide book is going to have indepth information on objects within a
specific gallery. Each object will have a photo, additional
background information about the object, a bibiliography list , and a
list of associated objects (like tags for other items). The guide
will be available for patrons as well as future volunteer docents to
help them learn more about a specific gallery during training.

I am having trouble finding examples of similar guides. Could someone
please point me in the direction of examples of similar gallery guides
for history and/or art museums?

Thanks

Tramia Jackson

Hi Mia,

If you're in northern VA, try to check out Dumbarton House (www.dumbartonhouse.org). For each room, there is a gallery guide similar to what you described in a report cover held in a stand and it serves both as docent and visitor reference. One great idea is to have an index card with a picture and information for each object in the room and keep them all on a ring-- that way, if exhibits change, it is easy to take out objects and add in others.
I think the key is to make it easy for visitors to find information on what they're looking for and easy to read- if it's too wordy or very small print then you're in danger of the TLDR (too long, didn't read) problem.
Good luck!
