Carol,

Here's another idea for your books.    Mayer-johnson has sign langauge animations. http://www.mayer-johnson.com/MainBoardmaker.aspx?MainCategoryID=5419&CategoryID=5420&SubCategoryID=5627

You could use these to show in sign what the word is.

As another option(that doesn't cost money, if you have digital video ability), you could take little videos of Trisha signing things, and insert these into the book, to connect the written words with the signs she already uses.   Plus, it's very cool to see yourself in a book!

I have seen a very cute book like this this.  Each page was "I can sign___.  can you?"   and had a different word on it and a child signing it. the child stood in formt of a chalboard with the word written on it and a picture of the word, so the reader saw the word in 3 different ways.

You could pick a different phrase, like "when I want____ ,I sign_____.  and show a phrase she might use (I want____, or _____ please). Then you could also have her with the item she asked for, signing thank you.  Or, you could do one of these for the feelings--angry, sad, happy, tired, hungry, etc.

Thank you so much!  These are great ideas and I really appreciate the help.  My son said when he gets back from his trip he will take some clips of her signing different things and we will use them in the books as well.  See this is the kind of creative ideas I needed.

loosely related.

Boardmaker has the DOLCH sign language add on. I am currently taking
each card, has the word and the sign, and adding the 84 sequenced
location for the Vantage on the bottom. Part of my multi area
exposure to each of the basic words! I am not printing it as cards,
but as pages, and putting them in page protectors, so I can make a
nother dictionary for her. It woudl be nice if I took them all, and
put them on business cards for my regualrditionary for her, huh?
Maybe this summer. Have to get past this week first.

I'm not so sure business cards would be all the convenient.  What I did for Trisha was I made flash cards using the boardmaker sign language addendum and then I made a dictionary of words she knew for the staff and teachers so they might understand her better.  I also explained her approximations to them so they could recognize her sign for water but at the same time see the actual sign for water. I need to update her dictionary as it is over 2 years old and we have more signs that she has learned that needs to go in it.

I use the sign flashcards to teach her new signs and we finger spell each new word as she learns it.  I wish I had started teaching her the finger spelling when I started using the flashcards several  years ago.  Now I have to go back and teach all the words she already knows in sign for her to be able to finger spell them as well.  Oh well you live and learn.  lol

The reason I say business cards might not be that convenient is that they are so small and as you accumulate them they can get rather bulky.  Unless of course you are just putting key signs on the business cards?  I also tend to think size because of Trisha's low vision but that might not be an issue for you.  :-)

The cards that came with the Dolch cards are flashcard size, but
Kendra's dictionary is in business card page holders, can fit like 10
per page per side. So, I suppose I can copy the BM cards, and paste
them onto buisiness card size? I've never tried copying from BM to
somewhere else, does it work? Vision isn't a problem for her, but
might be if I try to get the sign and the sequence all on one card,
for the aide, LOL

The OT sent a calendar home, different OT things to do every day all
summer. Other than the first signs they teach you, Kendra doesn't
know any others. The IEP says to communicate in any way possible. So
on her OT calendar, on Mondays usually, it says to fingerspell her
name, and Kendra got a kick out of that, so I thought I would teach
her some more signs, while she is showing interest.

I have BM v6, Writing with Symbols 2000 with the Unity symbols
dictionary, and you name it, I probably have it. The Dolch Add on was
probably about $30, so all the Dolch words from pre primer through
primer 3 I think are already done, wth the word and sign, I just look
up the sequence, and add it to the bottom after I move the sign and
words around. Oh well, I suppose I sahll get to it and see if it is
possible sometime soon. I have to be at school every day this week,
and am very busy. 4 more days of this teacher, YEAH (only 3 after
today!) My cuirosity might get me though,a nd I will jsut AHVE to try
it. Usually, you can't view BM stuff with anythingn but BM, but I
don't know aobut copy and pasting. And I import stuff into BM all the
time, and copy and paste stuff and make new symbols. But I ahve never
tired copying from BM, and putting it somewhere else. Ok, talked
myself into it, I am going to go try it, since I have a couple of
hours before I have to be to school.

Ok, yes it is very doable, if I copy and paste each card. Now, I
COULD get more fancy, and save each finished card as a symbol and make
a new user category of sign/vantage, that way it will show up in the
Symbol Finder alphabetically. Oh great, another project I probably
won't ever finish.

When I paste the finished card into Word, and diagonal squish it to
fit on a business card size (I do 2.75"x1.5") it is a very nice size
for them to see.
