I have posted information on prompting that we are attaching to the
boys' IEPs.   Thought this might be helpful.

Click on http://groups.google.com/group/AACParents/web/prompting-hierarchy
- or copy & paste it into your browser's address bar if that doesn't
work.

That is very helpful, as in Kendra's IEP, we put that she is to use
any form of communication possible, to fix communication breakdowns.

Maybe I should add, where it says to model, something like look up
some words you are looking for, using icon tutor.  (Remember, the
person doing the modeling often has no clue where anything is, so if
she looked up a couple of words, Kendra can pick the one the chooses
to use. )  Any ideas how to word this?

Given a field choice of 3, Kendra will be able to chose which word fits
best?

Amy, see what you think of this: (additions in red)

  4. Modeling:  Say it on the AAC system first, and the student will say the phrase after you do. Demonstrate how to look up a word using the Icon tutor, if necessary.  If not, pause 10-15 seconds, then request that he say it, too.

Does that help?   I didn't say who stands to benefit from using the icon tutor, because it may be more empowering to staff if they focus on teaching Kendra how to use it, instead of the the fact that they don't know where words are.  (sometimes people psych themselves out when they think too much about all of the things they don't know, and it makes them not want to try.)

At this point, I would not worry too much about having them look up choices of words; they can verbalize some other options when giving verbal directions(the prompting step before this one).   Once they get to the point of modelling, it will be best for the staff to jsut show 1 way to do it(for their own sakes, as well as kendra's).   If she chooses to do it a little differently, great!   If not, she can do what they have shown her.
