The Giver and The Village

5) I think this two story is the same, and the character is doing the same job but in different way. And this two place is not now it is like before very old. And I think the two story wont change it.

 

            6) In the colors, it has the same idea which color is bad and good, like the color red in the village it represent the monster, and the color of yellow is good.  The second thing that I will tell is sight, in the village they can see the color, but they don’t know what is in the town, in the village, they wont have a feeling or relies that there is a color in their real life.

7) The giver is like a place that got no freedom, and there is many rules in that place, then it had education, Jonas need to receive the memory from the giver, and looking at books to learn more, but the memory will be disappear from the giver and Jonas will have the memory. In the place there had different kind of job that everyone need to participate in it.

 

            The village, everyone is free, they ate the food together at night, the elders want to control the village, so they lie to them that there is a monster in the woods, so they wont had a chance to go out to the village, and they had made a dress that is like a monster to scare them to make them believe it, so there are not much rules.

 

            In the giver it must not be a utopias, because it had so much rules, and I feel that they are always not happy, and nervous about all the things like study, money or foods. In the giver I think it sacrifice so much things, is almost everything, like times colors, and no more freedom all the choices is not we are making.

 

            In the village the elders don’t want the people to go out not thinking of others, and they make them feel happy when they are living in the village. In the village I think they sacrifice freedom and the understanding and the town or knowing everything out side the village.

 

            I think the village comes closer to achieving a perfect utopia, because it just missed one thing, then it is perfect, but the giver still has lots of things or rules need to change is all controlled.

 

            If I am choosing where I live I will live in the village, because there is some excitement no freedom in it like the monster, I will like to know what is it and find the answer.

In the giver I would like to change the rules or the world, because a world wont is a flat place it is very different.

 

            In the village I will want to tell the truth of the monster, and let them go to the town, and let them had some freedom, and they can come back to the village, because they wont have much money to live in the town is they must come back to the village.

 

            In this two story it don’t have a ending, the author make a mystery of this two book so you can think your own ending to it.

5.  The village and the Giver are two very similar stories, both are writing about creating a utopia, and having a brand new start, and brand new society. The thing that’s different about these two stories is that one chose lie to all their people, creating stories, in order to keep them safe, in my perspective, it is a white lie. Some lies are to be kept to prevent people form falling and getting hurt. In the giver, they chose to give all memories to one person, known as the receiver. This person will receive all memories from the community, negative and positive ones.

 

6. Truth and Lie – In the village, the town elders decided to create a lie about their society, in order to prevent their people from entering the towns, to keep them safe; whereas in the giver, they decided to give all the memories to the receiver, the one with the greatest hour. The receiver is the person who will keep all the memories, painful and happy ones, and he is not allowed to share it with anyone. It is also similar to creating a lie, to hide their people from the truth.

 

Color – In giver, only people with greatest honor are able to see color, including the giver and the receiver, Jonas. Not all of the people can see or experience color. In their community, red is one of the important colors, also the first color that Jonas ever saw and experienced. However, in “the village” all the people are able to see color, they can also distinguish the “bad color” red. Comparing both of them, the people in the village has more freedom in sight than in the giver.

  

7. People in both these villages have to scarify their freedom in order to continue their “perfect” society, maybe they didn’t even notice that, the town elders keep all the rights and memories from the people. The had to give up their freedom of choice in the giver, the freedom to choose their own jobs, their own families. In my opinion I think the society in “the village” is more close to become a perfect utopia, because compare to the giver, they have more freedom, more choices and they are allowed to keep their own memories which is one of the most basic thing that we, human beings should have. I won’t choose to live in either of these communities because I don’t like that they have such strict restrictions and rules. Furthermore, to have a fair society, everyone should have the freedom to make decisions together, not only the “town elders” in both of those stories. The endings in both novels and the movie are very similar, the authors/ directors left the story’s ending open ended, very mysterious and it leads the audience to think about what would happen next. In my opinion, I think that these types of endings are actually quite good because then we will have more areas to discuss about.

5) Describe the setting in the movie. How is it similar/different to that in the novel? 

The setting in both stories are quite alike. They are both small communities that's unmodern and is cut off from the rest of the world, their communities are very strict, but the difference is that in Jonas' community, people are not able to see colors and they have a lot of rules. 

6)The novel and the movie deal with many themes. Choose two common themes from the list below and discuss how are they dealt with in The Giver and The Village.

Colors- People in The Giver's community are not able to see colors, only Jonas and The Giver are able to because they are the receiver of memories. The first color that Jonas saw was red, he figured that out because he realized Fiona's hair was different and he asked the giver about it, then the giver start teaching him colors. The Giver gave Jonas a memory on 2 men killing the elephant, the blood was red. Also he remembered that the apple he threw to Asher was red too! Red is a very important color in the book 

Red is a very dangerous color in The Village. Red is used to attract the monsters in the woods and they are not allowed red things in their community, every time they see red flowers/plants etc they have to bury it immediately. It is also known as the 'bad color' in the plot. Yellow is the 'good color' because it keeps people safe. When Ivy was in the woods, she wore a yellow hood to keep her safe and keep away from the monsters 

Control- In the giver, control is one of the biggest theme. Everything was controlled in Jonas' community, everything was assigned. Kids, names, jobs and spouse etc. They are not allowed to do a lot of things, for example: misusing words, telling lies, falling in love etc. But Jonas was then able to lie because he was assigned as the giver of the community and while he's reading his rules, one of his rules was: You are able to lie. 
People in Ivy's community aren't as strict as Jonas' community. They are able to lie, we can see that is because his dad and most of the town elders are telling lies and making rumors about the beasts in the woods just to keep their citizens from going to town. But other than that, they are allowed to do many things. 

7) In both stories, inhabitants have to give up their freedom in order to live in a utopian community that the town elders wants. In the giver, they have to give up a lot of their choices, for instance: memories, colors, freedom to choose their own families, freedom to choose their own jobs etc. In The Village, they have to give up their freedom of going to the town and the town elders kept them by telling them that there are monsters in the woods. I personally think that Ivy's community is closer to achieving a utopia, because they have less rules and inhabitants can have more freedom, but it would be hard for the town elders to lie forever about the monsters. I would choose NOT to live in both communities, because I would never get use to a community full of rules and cut off all the technology that we're using now days. But if I had to choose 1, I would choose to live in Ivy's community because there are colors. Both of the endings are the main character knowing the truth of the community. In The Village, Ivy's dad told him about the monster in the woods are fake. In The Giver, Jonas found out what it is like to be released and how everybody don't have memories.

5.  I think that there are lots of different similarities and differences comparing the Giver with  the Village.

     Both the utopias in the Village and the Giver are kind of similar, both of the utopias are cut off from the outside world, with the leaders of the utopia controlling the villagers, therefore they don't not knowing anything about the people, creatures and other things outside their community. They both have strict rules that all of the citizens follow, and has a strict use of percise language.

     For differences, the people in the Village have more choices of freedom, but with no technology, where in the Giver, the community has  technology, but it is only used for the scientist to take strict control of the citizens and the citizens doesn't know about nor able to use it.

6.    The Village and the Giver have lots of common themes, and both of them have lots of things in common. 

     Rules are very important in both the village and the giver's community. There are strict rules that everyone follows, and without hestitation.

     The community and the Village's Town Elders takes full control of the community and citizens. They have made lies, to keep the community in control, they also make most of the decisions in the community and the citizens just follows them ,assuming what they decided is wise and whatever they said is true.

7.   Even though both of the " utopias " might have made the citizens live well due to the fact that they don't need to be fustrated in decisions and avoiding making wrong choices, but they would have sacraficed a lot of their freedom, but i think that the community in The Village achieves more into becoming a perfect utopia, because they have more freedom than the people do in the community in The Giver. 

     I think that both of the novel and the movie have similar endings, where you won't know what really happen in the end, but i assume that both of them would end a happy ending, and i think that the ending of the Giver was more mysterious.

     For me, i would like to live in the Giver's community, this is because, even though there would be a big lack of freedom taken away from me, i won't need to be threatened everyday that there's a monster living in the woods near my home and the Giver's community seems more safe.

5)       

 The movie and the novel demonstrate very similar themes about creating a utopia. In the movie, the town elders created monsters and lied to other villagers about creatures in the woods. In the novel, citizens simply didn’t wonder about what were outside of their community. I think that there’s much more technology in the Giver than in the Village. In the Village, people kept black boxes that kept bad memories in the past. In the Giver, they chose a Receiver to receive all the memories to one person, including good and bad memories.

Color - The theme color is shown repeatedly in both The Giver and The Village. In the Village, red is the bad color because it attracts “Those We Don’t Speak Of”. “Those We Don’t Speak Of” are made up monsters to keep the villagers away from the towns. In the Giver, community elders constantly lied to keep the citizens in control.

In both failed utopias, inhabitants had to give up their freedom in order to live in a utopia. In the Giver, they had to give up a lot of freedom. For example, citizens did not have memories, colors, and freedom to choose their job, spouse or even their family members. Babies were also assigned to each family. In the Village, people had to give up their freedom on technology, medicine, and truth. Many of the technology seen in towns did not exist in the village. The medicines that they use were also bad. Town elders constantly lied about the woods, the towns and the monsters to keep people away from the towns. I think that Lucius’ village is the closest to being a utopia. If Lucius didn’t get injured, this village might be able to live forever. Even after Noah died, the elders made up a story about Noah’s death and made their story more realistic. I would like to live in Ivy’s community because I want to experience their way of life. Young people tend to disrupt or disturb the rules and the lies in both utopias.

5) These 2 stories are both very similar, both about creating a utopia world, having a brand new start in a new society. The differences between these 2 communities are one can lie, and one can’t. “The Village” chose to lie to help people safe, and not to lose their family members. I think this is a good lie because we all want our family to be safe, and to share love around. Both villages also have rules. 

6) colours- In the Giver, no one can see colours except for the giver/receiver(which is Jonas and the giver). Everything the citizens see are black and white. The first colour Jonas has experienced was the colour red. At the same time in The Village, the colour red was the “Bad colour”, it is because it attracts the monsters to town.

Trust and Lie- Everyone was taught not to lie in The Giver. No one was except to lie except for Jonas, since he was the receiver. The receiver’s job is to store memories for the citizens, god and bad ones. Where in The Village, the memories were stored in a box with different items to help them remember it. In The Village, the town elders are allowed to lie about monster to keep the families safe.

7) The both communities failed to create a utopia world. Firstly in The Giver, citizens are not allowed to chose their own choices, they can’t choose their own jobs, mate etc. which sometimes might make them sad. There is a population control, no sexual activities are happening. The Village is a more successful utopia compared to The Giver, because they god more choice of freedom. In The Giver, the people cannot see colours, which makes their daily life boring, same weather everyday also. In The Village, medicines are provided at another village, that makes it inconvenient. If anyone needs medications, they need to go for a long walk for it. That might lead the person to death because of time waiting too long.

5) The setting of the movie is in an isolated village in the middle of a forest.

6) Rules - Both communities have lots of strict rules that people need to adhere to.

Control - Both communities are under strict control and are not allowed to leave the area of their community. They both have their past hidden away from the younger generation and don't know much about other communities although they realize that they do exist.

7) The inhabitants of both communities need to sacrifice their past and freedom. I believe Jonas' community is closer to achieving and perfect utopia and that is the one I would choose to live in. Young people in both communities attend school to continue the society for generations. Some young people may change things if they disagree on something and wish for a change. They may do this by suggesting ideas to someone or acting it out by themselves. In both stories the ending is unclear and open-ended. We don't know if the character at the end dies or not and what happens after that.

5) I think that these two story are the same because they all take place in the forest and their rules of the communities are so tight, but the difference is the century.

6) In the colour, they have know that two colour represent good and bad. In the village, the good colour is yellow and the bad colour is red. The rules of these two communities are so tight, it makes them no freedom. 

7) In this two communities, the people that live in this two village think they inhabitants freedom. I think that Lucius's community is the one that closer achieving a perfect utopia that I would like to live. Both young people in this two communities attend school to become the next generation  for the communities. In both story ending, they were end not clear, we do not know the future of the main character or the director want us to create our own ending.

5) The giver’s setting is “the community” which a group of people cut off from the world outside (elsewhere). The village’s setting is “The village”, which is also a group of people living in the woods, isolated from outside (the town). The settings are really similar because of the groups of the movie and the book are also isolated from the real world and no one in the real world knows it exist.

 

6) There are two common themes in the movie and the book, colour and sacrifice in the movie, colour acts a really important role, because it is a sign of danger and safe. There is a rumour of strange creatures attaching people who enter the wood and into the towns. The people are scared of them so they have a danger colour, red to warm them and a safety colour, yellow to keep them safe just for in case and means that they mean no harm. They also have to sacrifice this right of having technology too.

 

In the book, colour also plays an important rule, because it is one of the things that are needed to sacrifice in Jonas’s community. There are many things to sacrifice here in this controlled community where they have no control of emotions, no control of who to love, no control of having a family, no control of expressing feelings… here are much to sacrifice if you live in Jonas’s community.

 

7) In these two utopia, the people who controls the community requires people living there to give up their personal freedoms in order to create and succeed their perfect society where people get to talk in polite language and live peacefully. But they all failed, because of curiosity and freedom of people living there they were tired of being controlled, and believes that there are elsewhere and the towns that will have caring and technology and love. The inhabitants of the two utopia need to sacrifice their freedoms, they are forever trapped in this controlled place where every decisions have to be reported to the tow’s elders (committee) and would have to take the advices and give up their wants. I think the giver’s community came closer of having a perfect utopia because everything is under control, love emotions, jobs…  The committees are really smart they know that if they control their emotions and love, there will be no love sacrifices and angers or even sadness; the emotions are all the same- sameness. They make the people living there take the pills to control their stirrings (which I believe it is love) so when the emotions is controlled, and everyone is the same, polite, happy and controlled. The people living there thinks that everything is normal, that the rules that must be followed, releases (killing), black and white, so no one will feel uncomfortable off living in this controlled place. The town elders don’t want the inhabitant to chose because they are scared that if they chose, they will have a very big chance of making wrong choice. So they took away the color, emotions and they took away their freedom of choosing whom they love and what will they do when they grow up. When people think that everything is very normal so no one will come out at protest about the controlling rules. So the committees can have a perfect society when no one will protest about it. If I can choose, I would like to live in Jonas’s world, because people can treat the others and me equally, and communicate in a very polite way. The young people help changed the communities with courage, they are brave enough to do such dangerous thing that no other one will ever try. The two novel and the movie’s ending is very different, Jonas went to elsewhere and will never go back to the cruel world where there are no love, emotions and freedom but Ivy go to the towns where they all know it exist and will return to her community.

5) In both of the stories they are trying to create a Utopia and a brand new start for people but there are things that has to be sacrificed to be able to make this happen. In The Village the town elders made a lie about this monster that lives in the woods to scare the villagers for them to not leave the village and so the Village was cut out from the outside world. In the Novel they were also cut out from the outside world but the difference is that the people in the giver simply did not think about things like this because their village has taken all their memories and has stored them in one person called the receiver.

The other differences are also that in the Village the people who lives there has a lot more freedom of choice but they have to live with very little technology. But in the Giver you have very little freedom of choice and most of the things are already assigned to you but they have more technology.

6) Control- Both of the Utopia has their leader or the elders which are the people who control this Utopia and knows all the secrets and lies that has been kept in this village. They also know all the things that happen in their Utopia. In the giver people were controlled and assigned to things like their jobs and their spouse. They also have a lot of rules to follow for example using the correct words, no lying and having to take their pills. In the Village there where less rules for the people to follow, they were allowed to lie and were allowed to choose their own spouse.

   Color- The theme of color shown repeatedly in the giver and the village. In the village red and yellow were 2 very important colors, red is the bad color that attracts "Those we don't speak of" and yellow is the safe color that "those we don't speak of" does not like and will not attract them. In the Giver only the receiver can see colors while the rest of the community cant see any color and everything is the same color.

7) In both Utopias the villagers who live there has to sacrifice a few things to make it a Utopia. In the giver the Inhabitants has to sacrifice memory, freedom of choice, the ability to see color or hear music, and has to go with sameness. In the village the inhabitants has to sacrifice the ability to connect to the outside world and technology.

I think that the village in the giver came closer to becoming a Utopia because they were very close to making every body the same and make take away the freedom of choice for their inhabitants. But for me i think i would rather live in the Village this is because they have more freedom of choice and you can choose what you want to do, but in the giver every thing is already assign to you. 

Both of the endings of the movie and the novel is that the main character finds out the truth of the community. In the giver Jonas finds out what release really is and how memories are taken away from the everybody and stored in one person. In the Village Ivy finds out that the monsters were fake and that they were just costumes that were made up.

The Giver and The Village Analytical Response

     The Giver and The Village are both very similar and different in their own respect but they both have the same concept, there is a Utopia and then something happen that threaten the normal life of the people to change. In the Giver, Jonas escapes from the Community, which will cause disorder within the Community.

      In the Village, after Lucius’s terrible accident, he is severely injured and needs medication from the town beyond the woods. The problem is that the people of the Village have kept a pact with the creature that live in it so never cross their territory. The Elders have to decide whether or not they should let Ivy go through the woods. 

     The Village takes place in a old-fashion village where people wear old-fashion clothing. . The Giver however takes place in a modern world but the book takes place in a very distant future.

     In both the novel and the movie, there are many recurring themes that underline the story and emphasize the control and the way that the utopias function. One of the themes that are present both the Village and the Giver is the theme if “Control”. In the Giver, the committee controls almost everything, there are very few things that you can do by your self. The reason for this is because the Elders are afraid that you might do something “wrong” and cause conflict within the community. The two biggest things that can threaten the Community are change and choices. This is why the Committee tries to get rid of them, by making everybody’s live as routine, generic, and same as possible. In the Village however, the people have more freedom, they can choose what they want and what they do for the most part, by the only restriction. The “creatures” were created to protect the innocent people within the Village from the terrible people in the towns. Every single one of the elders has a deceased loved one who was killed by someone. The theme of control is more prominent in the Giver as the Village Elders in the movie do not assign you everything and control everything. However, this comes with its consequences. After Lucius proposed to Ivy, Noah starts to get jealous and severely wounds Lucius. This is one of the things that, in the Giver, the committee tries to prevent from happening. As long as you have choices and emotions, something tragic is bound to happen. 

     Besides that the theme of “Color” is another one that appears in both The Giver and The Village. In the Village, the use of color helps to make the people think that they are safe in the Village from the monster and that yellow is the magical color that protects you from the monsters and that red is the “bad color” as it will attract the creatures. Everything about that is rubbish. It is just another one fo the “Magic Stones” that are kept into place to make people think that they are safe. In the Giver, the theme of color proves the point of the Elder’s choices, to eliminate all choices and changes from the village, if they have colors, then people will start conflicts just choices can cause tragic accidents just like the one in the movie. 

     Both The Giver and The Village feature a group of people that are creating a utopia, trying to create a perfect world that is protects its people from bad things. In the Giver, they tried to take away the war, pain, suffering and death from the people but they also have to take away choices because if they continue to have choices, eventually, the things that they are trying to keep away from it’s resident will start to happen again. In the Village, the elders try to isolate the people and do not let them outside by creating a rumor that there are creatures in the woods. This is so that the people of the village will keep away from the outside world, where the elders of the community experienced painful memories. But it also causes the people to … Even though they both, in principal, are the same thing. I think that the Village has a more successful Utopia. This is because in the Giver, everybody is safe and there is nothing that can harm them, but the people do not have emotions and are “brainwashed”, besides the receiver, are told what to do and you must follow that as you cannot think for yourself. Because of this, if I had to choose, I think that I would want to live in the Village rather than in the Giver since I think that even though the utopia in the Giver is safer, I think that we would be giving up too much for it.
