Subject: Not getting accurate cluster counts
When I use the cluster feature in Concord, I'm not getting an accurate
count of the clusters in the texts.  For example, I was looking at the
word "job" and

1. in cluster, got a count of 6 uses of "offered the job"

2. when I looked back at the concordance lines, I saw 12 uses of
"offered the job."

3. To check, I ran a concordance for "offered the job" and got 12
lines

So.  Help!

Pat

Pat, hi

Perhaps you could send me the .cnc file? This certainly ought not to
be happening and I would like to try and find out!
Cheers -- Mike

I opened the .cnc file and this time I got the correct counts.  I
wonder what could be happening.  Pat

Here's something I noticed.  When I open a .cnc file, it comes with an
inaccurate cluster count.... if you go to clusters immediately without
computing them, there's a little list but it's not accurate.  Then,
when I compute the clusters, I have to give WS about a count of 10 to
do its work.  If I try to look at the clusters any faster than that,
I'll get the wrong counts.  Does that make any sense?

Well, here a few hours later, I'm getting the wrong counts again.
Could MS get tired?  stressed out?  too full of stuff?  Same .cnc file
got accurate counts and now is getting the wrong counts.  I'm going to
shut WS5 down for a while and see if it can get the correct counts
later.

I shut my computer down and then started up again.  When I reopened
WS5, I was still getting the inaccurate cluster counts.  I'll send you
the .cnc file.

I'm getting 12 of "offered the job". (which -- I've checked in the
concordance) is correct.
I don't understand about the count of 10. Do you mean you have to wait
much longer than you expect?
FYI the cluster count gets calculated as the concordance is done but
then gets re-computed when you need it, I think choosing the menu
option for clusters certainly forces it to be re-computed, because you
may have altered settings or deleted some concordance lines.

What I meant by the "count to 10" is that concord does not do the
computing and posting of the clusters instantly (I'm not complaining)
but takes about 5+ seconds (which can seem like a long time).  If I
open the clusters too quickly, I do not get an accurate count.  The
screen seems to do a little flash at about the point when the clusters
are ready for viewing but otherwise there is no way to know that it's
ok to open clusters to get the correct counts.  So, I have developed
the counting as my way to slow myself down until concord is ready.
