Hi –

I recommend Identity and Control by H. White. He is the godfather of social networks, analysis and leader of the Harvard Revolution. We owe him practically everything. If you can’t read the book, be sure to read the excellent review (attached) by Don Steiny.

Facebook the new OpenID?

Article about Facebook and our identity on the web:

Will these changes ultimately change our identity on the web?, or our
feel for identity? You "are" your identity! So how about trust? How
"open" will we be(come) to expose ourselves on the web?

Facebook Connect is a way for Facebook to monetize the user identity
information it thinks it owns. Does it have value, sure. It really
isn't revolutionary, except to those that don't understand the identity
metasystem.

Yes of course it's a way to monetize user identity information. And
no it isn't revolutionary. But it may well be dangerous!

It may be much more attractive to users to login anywhere with their
Facebook ID (to the benefit of Facebook) than to use an OpenID.
Meaning the identity of millions will be in the unsafe hands of a
private company, not owned by a not-for-profit consortium with clear
guidelines and rules about privacy and respect of your identity.

Is it identity information or attribute information? Aren't identities
perceptions? Are the "attributes" on Facebook even attributes?
Identities are transient and attributes are relative to a context. Danah
Boyd has been writing about on-line identities for years. Of course, it
is pretty much up to each author to define what he or she means by
"identity" in their particular discussion as it has as many meanings as
there are experts.
