So I found a used, unlocked 3G for $265 with iOS4 installed. I've had at least one pleasant surprise: the GPS works with both cellular data and wifi OFF. As long as I've loaded the map, it's apparently cached. When I walked down the street today, the GPS reading was within 10-20 feet. I guess this works with cell tower triangulation? I'm surprised at the accuracy. There are probably a lot of towers here in SB.
I wouldn't have asked for iOS4. It's slow, as people are saying on the web, and the hardware can't really do a god job on it. I've read that the 3G and the original iPhone have the same CPU and RAM, and it's not on the list of supported hardware. However, I'm very happy with the phone on T-Mobile. We'll see in a few weeks if it works on O..nge. It looks to me like one band will, but who knows.
I would like to get some advice from trusted people (ahem, that's why I'm writing to this list) about how to maintain the unlocked state. I don't care about the jailbreaking per se, but I'm given to understand that it was necessary to do the unlock. I see there are updates, both for iOS4 and Cydia, but I don't dare mess with either for the moment. I'm looking for the best link(s) about this subject. Apple has supposedly improved response times in the later versions. I've also read that you can revert to OS3, but I have no backup of it having just bought the phone.
Anyone with info on this subject is welcome to post it here or email me.
Yes, I want an Android phone. As I've explained though, I don't have 3g service at all, so I think that part would be a waste of money. I'm testing two good SIP phones right now on the iPhone. Some day one of you can sell me your old Android phone when you move to 4g ;-)
Hey Randy, There is lots... and I mean lots! of links and articles relating to the iPhone at this site: www.todayinios.com He does a great job at covering all topics and I know he has covered your issue and concern. Hope this helps you.

I have a Nexus One and I can assure you that for most things, Edge-only is not an issue. Most email downloading and most other data transfers are done silently by the phone while it's in your pocket. Associate it with your home & office Wifi APs and you'll get fast data most of the day. I don't see a big battery usage by the wifi radio on my phone.
It's only crazy stuff like listening to VUC in G722 with SipDroid that needs lots of data, and even that will work on edge, but not well. Get an unlimited data plan.

Hey Mark,
I'm glad you're listening to the crazy VUC stuff! On T-Mobile, I have no data at all, although it appears to do a few things free. I will see what happens on Orange. If it works, it'll be expensive but I'm mostly on wifi at home. Bottom line for me is a kind of "unified mobile communication" where I pay a fortune for data, but only for very short periods. A lot like renting a car twice a year vs owning one. Ends up costing a lot less, but isn't as flexible. I could be doing all this on Android, and someday I will if I find a decent phone at a good price. No one please mention Ebay, I'm alergic to it.
