Defending champion Venus Williams has advanced to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alisa Kleybanova, while second-seed Jelena Jankovic has been ousted by Tamarine Tanasugarn.
Bidding for a fifth Wimbledon title, the No. 7-seeded Williams broke in the eighth game of the first set on Monday.
The American raced to a 4-0 lead against the 18-year-old Russian in the second set, but squandered three match points and was broken in the eighth game before going on to win the set.
Williams is yet to lose a set in the tournament.
Playing with her left knee heavily strapped up, Jankovic lost 6-3, 6-2 against Tanasugarn, who had a No. 60 ranking on Court 18 on Monday and was treated for a lower back injury during the match.
It is the first time the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam in the open era haven't featured one of the top three seeds. Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova were ousted last week.
Dear Brother
I am happy to note that you have taken an interest in the Sisters.
There is an issue that needs to be raised, or raised more forcefully. Since 1999 one Sister or the other deserves to be ranked number one in the world. That has never happened, or only for a fleeting moment. The World Tennis Association makes up the criteria for awarding rank. They claim it is based not only on the winning record, but on frequency of participation at certain tournaments.
There is something wrong with their criteria, and I hope it is not “race.” Sports hero(in)es ought to be entitled to demonstrate humanism, as distinct from fanaticism. Number one rank should go to the best player, period.

Dear Brother
Are you all right? You are incommunicado, nothing about Serena at the US open, or any other news. Are you globe-trotting, as usual?
Apparently, I won’t see you in the global center at Millersville either….
Let me know if I can do something to overcome your self-imposed silence
