Uncle Tom's Cabin
|
| |
We know how popular the play "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was in antebellum
times, but was anyone aware of wide variety of songs used in the
play? This was before "Musicals", and Gilbert & Sullivan, so
apparently each venue could use whatever songs they wanted for the
actors to sing -- some of it just popular Minstrel tunes of the day,... more »

I am sorry to have been sooooo absent for soooooooo long. My life has
been beyond crazy for some months and it has gotten even worse as of
late.
For those who may have heard a bit, on top of a broken foot, loosing
my retail operations director and moving my mother in from St. Louis,
we had a very serious storm at Antietam about a month ago. Over 100... more »

That's it...Period
|
| |
I was thinking a lot about the presentation of the music we play and
the importance of a period correct replication instrument (or really
close). What brought his about was thinking of it in a more modern
context and realizing the importance of the "sound"., not just the
playing style. When I lived in Los Angeles, I went to the filming of... more »

Just noticed the June Lincoln photo someone placed, and wanted to
attribute the photo - It's Max Daniels of Wheaton, IL, who, with wife
Donna (Mrs. Lincoln) is one of the best Lincolns in the Country. He
enjoys a good banjer tune at times.

"Mr. Lincoln (Max), after Mary Todd (Donna) insists on his going to... more »

Trills and chills.
|
| |
Page 61. Frank Converse green tutor. Luke West's Walk Around. B
part, measure 4. A trill.
How do YOU play that?
The instructions say "Stop B, on second string, trill with the 1st and
2nd strings."
The best best I can do is a series of triplets. Who's got somethin'
else?

Fiddle tunes
|
| |
Anybody playing some fiddle tunes lately that work well on the banjo?
I was playing "Lincoln's Hornpipe" from Ryan's tonight...it's a nice
fit.
Another find of similar titles..."Downfall Of Water Street" in Ryan's
and Buckley's Best Reel from Rice.

...Yes. BTW, I don't suggest making a practice of following fingering as indicated in the primers as an end in itself for the sake of authenticity. Following the fingering indications will really help you assimilate the style. When I first started playing from the primers, I sometimes would try to apply regular clawhammer technique. Only when I... more »

repeated thumb strikes
|
| |
I think these repeated strikes are totally necessary to the style. Some passages can only be played smoothly by mastering repeated notes with the thumb, leading phrases with the thumb, doing several ascending notes with the thumb, etc. For a quick exercise, try working on Horace Weston's "Rock Susanna" in the Dan Emmet book. At first it's... more »
