I, for one, just opened the cover of Daniel Partner and Ed Sim's book
"With My Banjo On My Knee", complete with CD. In I go....report back
later. It sure looks beautiful with lots of arrangements and text.

Standard notation? Tab? The book hasn't even made it to the
Centerstream site yet. Thanks.

Dan,

I'm excited about ordering my own copy - been waiting for this for a
couple of years! Do you have a preference which vendor it is ordered
from? If not, I'll probably just go with Amazon (although I prefer
ordering my books from smaller vendors instead of the online
equivalent of a "big box store.")

Thanks in advance!

Hi John,

I am sure several list members offer the book from their
"small box stores." Mine is among the smallest and the book
should be in stock within the next week or so. But I should
mention that my friend Spike Bones calls my shop the "big
box store" for musical bones.

All the best,

Hi, John. Glad to hear from you. I don't know of anyone who is stocking the
book right now, except Tim Twiss, who is on the email list. Maybe you can
order it from him at milfordmusic.com

Dan,

Thanks in advance!

I don't know if this helps, but Elderly Instruments has the book advertised on its website....Has a good picture of the cover, list of tunes and a cogent description of the material inside......Brian in NC

My copy made it here today. Just reading thru it now, I'll get to
playing thru the tunes soon enough. Say! There's "Oh! Boys, Carry Me
'Long", I sing along with that one in the car. I have a copy of a
1918 recording by Harry Brown on my ipod.

Good points: I enjoy the historical blurb given to each tune. Very
well done and definitely creates more interest than just serving up
TAB. I also like how the monographs in the beginning of the book
segmentalize stuff; somehow easier to digest.

Gripe #1: I'm old! I can't read the lyrics under the tune! Where are
my glasses?
Gripe #2: What? Nobody wanted to sing? Banjo and bones are nicely
done...I'm missing the vocals!!

Overall, excellent. I just learned to play "Susanna" for our monthly
coffeeshop jam and now I have some more material to work with. I'll
be learning quite a few of these tunes (no, I don't sing either).

Thank you Mr. Partner and Mr. Sims. Great addition to my stack of
music!

Thanks for the kind words Marc.

You are correct in that it is difficult to read the words under the
lyrics. We also have the complete original lyrics in the back of the
book.

Originally we were only going to have the banjo track to help players
learn the songs but the publisher insisted we add the bones. He likes
the bones.

Our goal is to have others play Foster's songs the original way & I'm
glad it's happening.

Marc -- Thank you for your complements. Re: the size of the type in the
music -- We were limited by the page count that is preferred by the
publisher. So, we couldn't spread a song across three pages if it would fit
on one. Concerning the CD -- Again, since this is a book of banjo music, the
publisher wanted only banjo and bones on the CD. Maybe we'll put the lyrics
with the music on another recording in the future. -- Daniel
