This is getting ridiculous. Is there ANY way to save your changes if
you use XP and IE6? (And before everyone starts clamoring for me to
use Firefox, it's *not* an option at work). I can edit like crazy but
the Save to Disk doesn't seem to work at all. (And yes, I downloaded
the latest version today, hoping this had been fixed.)

I couldn't save changes before, I still can't, and from the looks of
things, no one has an answer to this problem, because I see this
question posted elsewhere but never see a solution. Any takers? Or has
everyone just given up?

And there's no "block" or "unblock" button on the Properties tab, so
that's not an option either.

When you download a file from the 'net, Windows marks it as
'blocked' (for security) and keeps it in the more restricted
"internet" zone instead of the "local computer" zone, which usually
allows file I/O permissions to be granted.

Try this:
Go to the "properties" dialog for the file you downloaded. If it has
an "unblock" button... push it... then try reloading the document in
IE6.... you might have to clear your browser cache...

the have "Portable FireFox" that you can install AND *run* from a USB
stick... Bookmarks, cookies, user profiles, config files and, of
course, the FireFox program itself, are all kept on the USB stick, so
there's nothing to install, and you can use it at work and never leave
any trace of it on your work system!

Hi Kathy,

Have you ever tried the method which is described at
http://www.tiddlywiki.com/#ServicePack2Problems ? I usually simply
change the file extension of .html to .hta and that allows my to save
changes at my working place. Though then you don't have all the
browsers button, but that you anyway don't need for TiddlyWiki.

Hope this trick helps you too.

Did all that. So I say again, "There's no 'Unblock' button." I right-
click, I choose Properties, I get exactly 1 button, and it's an option
to change which application opens the file.

So then the short answer appears to be "it can't save in IE6 with
XPsp2 and it's not fixable" Having to run another browser app just to
use an HTML file is not really a solution. (And yes, I know about
PortableApps, but I was trying to keep from bloating up my USB stick
with another app I don't otherwise need.) It's a shame, too. I wanted
to be able to use this and I kept hoping there was a fix for it rather
than a workaround.

Thanks anyway, though.

But that wouldn't help in my case either, because at my working
computer all access to discs and USB is disabled :-(

Lucky you, if I could I would instantly use FF from an USB stick on my
working place - and not only because of TW.

Okay, same answer as before: There isn't an "Unblock" button/link/icon/
widget on the Properties tab.

Tried changing the file extention, too. WinXP didn't recognize what
app *.hta is associated with. So I associated the file, created a test
tiddler, hit Close, hit Save To Disk - and got a javascript error on
Line 4829.

Thanks, though.

The only way I could change the extension at my working space was by
opening it in notepad and saving it from there, because even access to
file extensions is prohibited at my place :-(

And then I didn't associate it with IE, but only double clicked and it
opens in a mshta.exe - don't know exactly what that is, but it looks
like a browser window without buttons or address bar. So I guess this
wouldn't work when you associated .hta with IE again.

However, navigating a TW this way works only very sluggish and isn't
fun at all.

W.

Kathy-

Are you trying to load/save TWs upgraded to TW2.3 or new TWs?
I am running Windows XP home edition/SP2, with IE7, and cannot properly import tiddlers from older versions ('access denied') or save changes ('appears to be invalid tiddlywiki').
New TWs created from tw2.3 empty are fine, the original TWs in older version are fine, just the upgraded ones have the problem.
I have decided not to upgrade the older version TWs until the promised automatic upgrade function is released.

I am reasonably computer literate, I like the TW concept and use them for my webpages, but I think the upgrade process needs to be tidied up before TW becomes more useful to users like me.
Reminds me of the early electronic cameras- heaps of features and power, but required an expert to drive them.
Then autofocus, autowind, autoexposure, anti-redeye, anti-shake, etc came along and hid that power and complexity behind a simpler user interface and turned them into real useful devices.
The compexity and power is still there for those that want to jump in, but the expertise is built into the user interface rather than having to be in the user!

Cheers,
Stuart Parker

Kathy,
.hta files are intended to be associated to mshta.exe. You can try
running "mshta mytw.hta"

One thing that may work (I'm on XP too, but I have an admin account on
it) is to
-download
-open with notepad
-open another instance of notepad
-paste the contents of the original file into the second notepad and
save the file using a new name

Unlike "save as", doing this should not drag the blocked status to
your new file.

Hope this helps.

I'm on Windows XP (SP2), and saving in IE6 works just fine here.*

As you can see, we're trying our best to help you solve this problem.
Nevertheless, I agree that a workaround (like HTA) is unsatisfying - we
should be able to get to the bottom of this issue.

Do you have administrator rights on your Windows account? Or maybe your
IT dept. has set up a very restrictive security zone in IE?

* First I downloaded the file via Save As from the respective link's
context menu. Then I selected the file in Windows Explorer, chose
Properties from the context menu and unblocked it from that dialog. Next
I opened the file in IE, acknowledged the security warning in the
information bar, edited some tiddlers, hit Save Changes, acknowledged
the ActiveX warning - and it worked.

Your admins removed it :-(
They enabled the "Hide mechanisms to remove zone information" policy

Since you seem to have an USB stick available, a simpler workaround
(if the stick happens to be FAT formatted) would be to copy it to the
stick and back to the hard disk with a different name. In that
process, the internet zone info stored in NTFS should be lost.

For them techies, additional info about how the internet zone is
stored:

Thanks for the background informations, Xavier.

I don't know if this appears only for me properly wrapped?
Stuart, do you have any idea what could have caused this different
Google formatting coming about?

I appreciate everyone's willingness to rise to the challenge and a
big
"Thank You" to those who bravely tried. :-)

First I should say that this has been happening with Windows XP Home
Edition w/SP2, so there's really no 'admin' to contact since it's me.
(At work, it's Windows XP Pro, where there *is* an admin.)

As I said in my first post, this was newly downloaded, so any
'upgrade' or 'older version' issues are also moot.

I tried renaming the file - several times - and copying it all over
the place, but that doesn't seem to make any difference at all. Tried
resaving it through NoteTab Light and Notepad, and that didn't help
either.

(As for Portable Firefox, it's nice but it's waaaaay too slow.)

Now here's what DID work - but ONLY on the Windows desktop:
1. Open GTDTiddlyWiki.
2. Click View > Source.
3. Select All and Copy. (CTRL-A and CTRL-C.)
4. RIght-click the Desktop and choose New Text Document.
5. Open the doc and paste.
6. Save the file first and then rename it with the HTML extension.

Tested it twice and it works perfectly. (Thank you, Xavier!)

However, the *same* process doesn't work when I try to create the wiki
on a Lexar flash drive. It also doesn't work if I try to copy the file
on the desktop to the flash drive. I can't figure out how/why it
should make any difference.

And again, there's no "unblock" for the flash drive so let's not even
go there again.

GTDTiddlyWiki from shared.snapgrid.com? That hasn't been updated for
ages; it uses a version of TiddlyWiki from the middle of 2005.

So I suspect some of the advice you've been getting doesn't apply to
such an old version of TW.

If you have any energy left after this experience so far, you could do
it all again with the latest TW from tiddlywiki.com :)

Cheers
