Hello all. I am a TiddlyNewbe. I have been using it for a week on two
different projects, and I must say that it is a wonderful tool and I
am excited to see what it all can do.

One of my projects involves placing the file on a common shared drive,
where my students can access it and hopefully make corrections/changes
to the labs that I am putting there. I am currently using tiddlyLock
to limit editing; but even without it, I can't really see there being
such heavy use that it would cause problems.

My problem, if it is one, is that each time the file gets updated a
whole new file is saved to disk. I imagine this is to keep track of
each edit, making reverts easier to do. We have plenty of space on
disk, so the number of files is not a problem, but I don't like the
idea of my students having to search for the latest edit. Is there a
way for there to be a file that doesn't change names, but displays the
latest edit? I guess putting it on tiddlyspot would take care of this,
but right now I would rather keep it in-house.

Thanks for the help.

I had a similar problem (not multi-user, but certainly lots of backup
files). so I have two suggestions for you:

1. install LessBackupsPlugin (http://lessbackupsplugin.tiddlyspot.com/)
This limits the number of backups created to one per hour, day, month,
etc. Read the docs for more detail.

2. on the advanced options dialog set the txtBackupFolder property
(subdirectory for backup files)

The net result will be one TW file where your students can find it,
backups in a subdirectory, and the backups will be limited to a
certain number of files (not growing forever).

By default, these options are stored in the cookies - i.e. in each
user's browser.
In order to make those options (including the option to save backups in
the first place) permanent and apply them to all users, take a look at
this page on the community wiki:

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I think the new file is just a
backup. The "main" html file should ALSO be saved over with the
latest version.

So if everyone only opens the myTW.html file, it should save
myTW.817263498.html AND myTW.html when they save their changes, and no
searching required.

LessBackups is awesome though, you should get that in any case.

Cheers

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am going to download lessBackups and
tweak the systemConfig a little. Daniel, I would have thought that the
file myTW.html should get updated whenever I save, but it doesn't seem
to. When I open it, the latest changes aren't there and the modified
date doesn't change. For the record, I use the latest versions of
Firefox and make sure to save within myTW.html and not through
Firefox.

I take it that something isn't quite right, if the myTW.html file is
not getting updated. Any ideas?

Shot in the dark here.. but is it caching in your browser cache,
perhaps? Try a shift-reload (as in, hold shift when you click
reload).
