[This is sort of a reply to
http://groups.google.com/group/TiddlyWiki/browse_frm/thread/e2e60e8797cc200f?tvc=1&q=markdown,
but replying to that post consistently failed]

First of all, I just discovered TiddlyWiki, yesterday, and I'm
floored. What an incredible piece of software!

Secondly, is there documentation for implementing alternate
formatters?

There is now a Javascript implementation of Markdown available
(Showdown: http://www.attacklab.net/showdown-gui.html), though since
the implementation is essentially a direct port of the perl script,
it's use for an alternate formatter may not be feasable.

I'm afraid there is no documentation for implementing alternate
formatters. However I have already implemented a few, see

http://www.martinswiki.com/

for implementations of MediaWiki (Wikipedia), TWiki, Socialtext, Trac,
PmWiki, PBWiki, and JSPWiki formatters.

See:

http://www.tiddlypedia.com/
and
http://www.tiddlypedia.com/solarsystem/

for examples of TiddlyWikis that directly use Wikipedia content.

I also have partially developed implementations of Textile and
Markdown which I plan to complete once the 2.2 release of TiddlyWiki
is out.

There are also a set of adaptors that allow you to import content from
other wikis - these are dependent on some new features of 2.2 and so
won't be generally usable until 2.2 is released.

See

http://www.tiddlywiki.com/beta/

for the beta release of 2.2 and examples of the adaptors and
descriptions of how to use them.

Wow, I didn't know about this before!
I have to admit that there are some things I don't like about TW syntax
- especially the links (I prefer MW's [URL description] syntax), so I
might look into that.

Are there any disadvantages? For example, importing existing tiddlers
(including plugins) might a pain...

The format is on a per Tiddler basis, so it's possible to mix and
match formats within a single TiddlyWiki. That is, you could have
MediaWiki, TWiki, Socialtext etc tiddlers all within the same
TiddlyWiki.

If you use any of my formatters, I'm very interested in feedback. So
please let me know of any problems you have or any bugs you find so I
can (try) and fix them.

That's brilliant!

I will most likely use them eventually - though I'll probably wait for
TW 2.2 to come out first.
Except, of course, if you want them to be perfect for the 2.2 release -
then I could run some tests next week.

I've done a fair amount of testing myself, but any additional testing
you could do would be most appreciated.
