For any guitarists out there: like to test a guitar tab plugin for TiddlyWiki?

Hi there,

I'm interested in finding some guitarists who would like to test out a
guitar tab plugin for TiddlyWiki, and help provide feedback on how it
could be improved. If that sounds like you, read on... please!

The idea of using a wiki as a music notebook is not new, but it's a
pain to work with ASCII approximations of proper notation.

I recently put together a TiddlyWiki plugin that performs inline,
automatic rendering of chord charts and guitar tab notation. It
basically integrates an open source "jTab" library to perform the
image rendering, and defines a simple macro for notation.

e.g. a basic chord sequence is written like this:
<<jtab 'Am7 / Dm7 Em7 |'>>
... but is rendered into chord charts

This looks really cool.
I've got a guitar teacher friend who might be interested as well as a
young nephew. I'm impressed that typing 'Esus4' gave me the right
chord.

I thiink it could be really useful for blogging music teachers. Some
tabs and a youtube vid would be a really good way to learn.

I really like the Rapheal stuff.

A recommendation? a TW version with all the scripts included.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for taking a look, that's great. The underlying jTab library is only a recent development, so looking for all the input I can. I .. er, ahem .. code better than I play, so the more eyes on it from well-schooled/professional players the better.

Doing a standalone TW version is probably a little way off, since there's frequent improvement/extension of jtab at the moment. It's a great idea for when it's stabilized a bit more though - eliminate the dependencies.

As an avid tiddlwiki user and guitar player this is a dream...
No more messing around with ascii or having to install PowerTab...
Just open a browser enter some strings and there you have it your tab
This is fantastic... great... thanks man...

Thanks for sharing - It's great to get yet another plugin that makes
TiddlyWiki worthy of beeing notepad nr. 1.
I've been using Tuxguitar/Musescore and Lilypond - sometimes
OooLilypond (WriterPlugin OpenOffice.org) to write my music and
guitarstudies for pupils.
(Before I discovered Open source - I was using Sibelius extensively -
also for guitartabs, - but I like to be able to share software with my
pupils and colleagues - therefore I've made a switch to Open Source)

What I really miss is the ability to write plain notes directly in a
TW - but your plugin shows that there is a way to communicate and
store both cadences and tabs for simple melodies - and that's a HUGE
step in the right direction.

Actually, the truth is that jTab was a spur-of-the moment project to test out raphael. The idea of sticking it in TW came as an idle thought afterward - but I guess I should pretend that was the idea all along. It is so right;-)

Måns - interesting to see you imagining the same idea in your old thread on Lilypond;-)
Do let me know about any ways it can be improved to meet your transcription needs. jtab still young, but I'd like to make sure it is a good, robust and general purpose solution for all guitar transcription.

Do you know what I have to do - to make it work?
2)
My TW uses a dark/tranparent background for the textbody.
I'd like to have a white background - just for the tabs.
How do I accomplish this?

I mixed up a TW/Web-vocabulary with a musicexpression for
guitarnotation - "tab" - meaning: notation of which note to play on a
stringed/fretted instrument, by writing numbers (fretnumbers) on lines
= strings.

What I'm searching for is a way to change the background to white of
tiddlers with a certain tag (I would probably use: "jTab").
I think I read something about using different colours for tiddlers in
an earlier thread - maybe it was just a script - don't remember. I
have to look for it.

If you have a simple css-workaround for it - I would be glad to know.

Hm - I've tried to open my TW (måns.dk) from different browsers -
different pc's during the last month without problems - now I can't
open it in older firefox browsers or seamonkey...
I t *must* have some relation to jTab plugin - or the changes I made
to MarkupPosthead - I have made no other systemchanges for almost a
month....

However I can open it online from FireFox 3.5 and IE 7...

I haven't tried printing jtab with the SnapshotPlugin yet - thanks for the alert, I'll check it out.

Regarding coloring of notation, you are right - currently it is fixed doing black on transparent background. I'm thinking about adding more control over colors (and sizing). In the meantime, a quick hack could be to style with CSS.  jtab renders into a DIV with class "jtab" - so you could set background-color on this as desired.

Måns, Rob and others who were kind enough to chime in with ideas: there's a 1.1 release of jtab now available that incorporates many of the ideas like color handling, tab notation shortcuts and the ability to render chords at any position on the fretboard. See

Do you know www.bopland.org? It has implemented Lilypond as an
