Hi, I'm a technology columnist, and have written TiddlyWiki a few
times over the years. I'd love to revisit the subject and am looking
to update myself, and my readers, about what progress TW has made
since I last looked. I write for a very general readership, and so I'm
looking for things that they may find useful, and simple enough to
implement, or for any individual usage that may inspire and encourage
them to give it a try.

I'd be grateful for any contributions, either here or at jeremy@loose-
wire.com.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Jeremy

You can see TiddlyWiki in Action which is a showcase of the way people
have used TiddlyWiki.
You can see the slideshow, tutorial and TiddlyWiki templates I created
for non-techie audiences. Some, especially No-Brainer Notes, are very
useful and easy to use for newcomers to TiddlyWiki.
From my tutorial there are links to other tutorials such as Morris
Gray's excellent and more up-to-date TW Help.
TiddlyVault is a plugin index for TiddlyWiki.
All these can be accessed by going to http://www.giffmex.org

Also tiddlyspot.com has a gallery of TiddlyWikis hosted at their site.
(Morris also has adaptations of my No-Brainer Notes hosted on
Tiddlyspot that are nice too)

Hi Jeremy,

I have created a TiddlyWiki that will generate quick and easy math
equations. It is aimed at those who need equation capability,
possibly on a casual basis, and can't afford or justify the disk room
of other methods. Of course it may be for those who just love to do
their work as much as possible with a TiddlyWiki.

With the cooperation of the author of the CodeCogs Equation Editor, it
has the ability to generate professional quality equation images that
can be inserted directly into a tiddler at the cursor position. It
has an external popup editor that adds little or nothing to a
TiddlyWiki's size

In addition, after creating a tiddler using equations, you can publish
an HTML version of the tiddler that can be attached to a normal HTML
web site. For permanent offline use the equation images can be saved
to a local disk and accessed from there.

An entry introduction to the math capabilities can be found at
http://twmath.tiddlyspot.com/

This site has a click only demonstration of its capabilities for the
equation challenged and examples along with links to ready-to-use
TiddlyWikis implementing the equation editor. It also is the source
for the plugin and instructions how to convert any TiddlyWiki for
equation use.

One ready to use TiddlyWiki includes my adaption of Dave Gifford's No-
Brainer Notes with many enhancements including the equation
capabilities. In TWT-Notes you can create topics and subtopics for a
structured approach to any subject matter for wide variety of
purposes. It normally uses tabs like a browser for access to open
tiddlers but can be converted back to normal TiddlyWiki behaviour by
simply disabilng the tabs plugin.

It's at http://twt-notes.tiddlyspot.com/

There is also an equation-ready empty (with a few enhancements) normal
TiddlyWiki. It too can use tabs or have them disabled.

It's at http://twequation.tiddlyspot.com/

Dave mentioned TW Help which is a reference site containing an
extensive collection of TiddlyWiki capabilities including the normal
functions of a TiddlyWiki along the the code and working examples of
many modifications that can be done for customization. While it is
not exactly new it is reasonably up to date and is a valuable
TiddlyWiki resource.

It's at http://twhelp.tiddlyspot.com/

I hope this information has been of some use to you.

Regards,
Morris Gray

Jeremy,

I know you've been interested in TiddlyWiki for a while, and it's great
that you're revisiting the subject!

> update myself, and my readers, about what progress TW has made

With regards to the core code, quite a lot has changed in recent times -
when did you last look into TiddlyWiki?

The changelog should provide a comprehensive overview:
http://trac.tiddlywiki.org/wiki/History
A high-level summary of important changes would include the automated
upgrade mechanism and improved theming support - but there are certainly
more things, which we'll add as we remember them.

Hi Jeremy - Glad you're still tracking the TiddlyVerse (for those that
don't know, Jeremy first wrote about TiddlyWiki on wsj.com back in
2005, and has published a series of interviews with myself and other
TiddlyWiki hackers at
http://www.loosewireblog.com/2005/08/the_tiddlywiki__3.html).

One of the TiddlyWiki segments that I've been watching with interest
is the Open Notebook Science movement, as explained by Garrett Lisi
here:
http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2008/09/lisi-on-a-wiki.html

Garrett publishes his own physics research on
http://deferentialgeometry.org/, and his work has been written about
here http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/07/21/080721fa_fact_wallacewells

Finally, twitter search an interesting way of getting a snapshot of
what people are doing with TiddlyWiki:

http://search.twitter.com/search?q=tiddlywiki

Let me know if there's any questions I can help you with.

Cheers

Jeremy.

I'm curious how Lisi does his tag tree on the left sidebar. Does he
use a standard plugin, or is this something he's worked out himself?

No plugins, just normal slider macros in the tiddler TabContents:

*<<slider chkSliderphysicsF physicsF 'physics »' 'physics stuff, what
this site is all about'>>
*<<slider chkSlidermetaF metaF 'meta »' 'describe the operation of
this site'>>

There are sliders within sliders within sliders too.

Thanks, Dave. Guess I need to learn about sliders. I was impressed
with the way he had his tiddlers organized the first time I saw it.
More so than I have been with what I've seen done with plugins. Maybe
it's no so easy though?

The sliders seem about as incomprehensible to me as the contents of
the Wiki, 2 Thessalonians makes more sense to me.

But returning to the original question - your No Brainer and Morris's
TW Notes are simple off the shelf applications that allow people to
simple get up and go with a Wiki which is easier and simpler to down
load than Media Wiki or some other application. It is the simplicity
and ease of using TW which is the story.

Oh no, someone's looking behind the curtain to see I hacked this tag
tree together by hand! How embarrassing.

If anyone wants to code up a proper plugin to build this kind of tag
tree automatically, that would be great. Maybe others would find it
useful.

Of course, then I'd have to deal with the issue that my TiddlyWiki is
still version 2.1.3...

Best,
Garrett

Hello All,
Firstly, excuse my bad english but my mother tongue is polish; so,
feel free to correct me.
I don't know if that is appropriate topic for this subject, sorry if
not.

My Valentine Day story.
Believe or not, but today I presented my wife the TiddlyWiki!
Yes, no kidding.
Of course, I known that I'm not owning TiddlyWiki per se.
Borrowing from Mr Jeremy Ruston's epigram, today I introduced my wife
into the TiddlyVerse.
And she was so happy like never in the last years!

So, shortly how this story goes:
Unexpectedly, since the beginning of this year, my wife was elevated
at new post in her company, totally different from positions held
until now. This promotion is very important for her.
As soon as possible she must introduce herself into a lot of new
stuff.

I was nervous how I can help her; we are both not very familar with
nowadays IT technology.
Having a little bit free time, I decided to make her surprise.
After searching the net I choosed TiddlyWiki mostly for it's easy
learning curve at beginner's stage.
Preperation of my Valentine's Day gift-lecture consumed same time but
was not so hard; the TiddlyVerse materials are very rich and awesome
quality.

Lastly, today I presented my Souvenir ...in installments, part by
part.
For starters we went through tutorials, presentations and examples of
the sites.
It is not place here to scrutinise all in detail, but conclusively we
arrived at No-Brainer Notes.
And see! During my big talk my wife just took off to start filling
topics and notes! It was very handy for her; so brilliant, simple idea
and intuitive, straightforward approach by Mr Dave Gifford.
The next I show her TW Notes and TWT-Notes. Wow, the eyes shined like
in a rage-fashion butik.. These are indeed very elegant models of
application. She was struck by aesthetic design and universal
granularity implemented by Mr Morris Gray.

Finally we came into conclusion; as from now on my wife is not afraid
of that kind of software, she will test 'in the field' what suits up
her the most.
Surely, as supervene, now I got from my wife the 'tasks to complete'
but before I will ask here for any help I am willing to try to resolve
her problems by myself.

I am very, very satisfied with my choise of Valentine's Day gift idea.
It was worthy every minute I spend for researching the TiddlyVerse to
see my wife smiling and very happy in this troubled time for her.
And the offshoots became obvious; apparently began vanishing her
feeling like of unfited and now she is tempted to digg into IT tools
and use them at the work.

Mr Jeremy and all Community developers and participants, I appreciate
very much your willingness to sharing the TiddlyVerse and I am owing
you my today's good time.
Sending lot of worm feelings to you all.

I known that this is very professional forum; I just used the
opportunity, to put my 2 cents in this particular topic, for exposing
how your activity influenting live of common people, as well as to
encourage 'the rest of us' to give It a try; thus bringing more
popularity into wider spectrum of users.

Thank you for reading.

Wow, I have never heard a story like that. That is wonderful that
TiddlyWiki has played such a special moment in your lives. What an
honor for me that my No-Brainer Notes played a part in that, too.

Make sure she sees the brand new TiddlyDu3, too, for personal
organization.

I am going to print this and put it in a file, so that when I am sad
and needing cheering up, I will have this to remember. Thanks for
sharing this. And I think I can speak for everyone here when I say
that we all hope your experience with TiddlyWiki is a fruitful and
enjoyable one.

Many blessings to you

Dave,

We, my wife and I, are not a yuppies anymore. My wife particularly is
a very conservative person turned back to modern days 'excitements'.
And suddenly she learned a new part and parcel of the actuality, and
she enjoyed it and just playing happily with these apps like a girl
with a new barbie.

What is moving me the most:
Once again I am onlooking how a very small things (here - zeroes and
ones) but carried out in good faith and by wise persons, can make
prodigious influence on ours day-to-day way of living; giving big
regard to one's confidence in oneself and in own abilities, which
reinforce one's self-assurance and self-respect and which tends to be
self-generating belief that one's can take up difficult goals and
persevere until have achieved them and moreover that still and all can
succeed in a wide range of activities.
That's what I see, what I feel and what I admire.
That's the very very human way..

As for TiddlyDu3, I have it in 'my drawer' together with TW TuDu
already, nearly ready for the next home-show that will happen sooner
rather than later, I think.

Thank's for your blessings and I wish the best for you and your
family.

Hiya Jerzy

Thank you for sharing that fabulous story. For me and I'm sure many of
the other people involved in TW, these glimmers from other people's
lives are a profoundly rewarding part of doing all of this.

Good luck to your wife for the new job, and best wishes and thanks to
you both,

Cheers

Amen. I loved your story, Jerzy. I think it says something about

idea -- that you were moved to share it with us.
