When there is a "mature" plugin that was created prior to the latest
core changes, is there anyway to simply make it compatable with the
new core ?

A case in point, for me is the DCtableofcontentsPlugin . It works
fine on their download site, aND it still works FINE if I copy the
complete site file to my desktop as is, but when I upgrade that
desktop downloaded complete file with the latest core upgrade, then -
whamo the file is broken.

I realize plugins aren't necessarily forward compatable with whatever
the future core upgrades may include, but would there be a means of
"debugging" possible incompatabilities. As in this TOC plugin, how do
you know if you require more then just the obvious plugin? Could
another tiddler (CSS?) require an update after the core update.

Some plugins document everything required for there usage, which is
cool and enormously helpful, others are not so explicit in their usage
and requirements for the debutant user.

So any suggestions on how to use DCtableofcontentsPlugin with the
latest core?

thanks

Links, so we can check it out? Maybe make a new tiddlyspot site with
that plugin loaded.

Broken how? Could you please elaborate a little on what happens? Is there an error? Does the plugin fail silently?

Just for the record, there is a

errors:
In the instance where I import the plugin into my tiidlywiki with the
latest core and all my plugins (which might cause a conflict
somewhere), there appears the error in the Plugin: error in macro
showtoc When I save and reload the tiddlywiki the whole tiddlywiki
hangs / freezes. The tiddlywiki tries to load but doesn't get past
the splash screem

In the instance where I copy over the plugin's site tiddlywiki, and
then load into that file the latest core, the resulting tiddlywiki
becomes completely unformatted if you will. The text is huge, ther
eare no headers and the plugin is non-functional. ( I didn't reload
that file though)

Are either of those a "silent" failure?

I was hoping to use the DC plugin version as it appears to allow you
use the resulting Table of contents as a means to "jump" to the
desired section of the tiddler.

Hey Gam,

Try this version that I just updated, it should work properly:
http://tiddlywiki.pastebin.com/f41f5e2e9

Let me know if you have any further problems.

For anyone curious as to what the problem was, it had to do with differences in the way the formatter object was constructed in older versions of TW.

Cheers,
Saq

Good job, sir! (I haven't really tested it, but I have yet to see one of
your plugins destroy a TiddlyWiki... hmm ... 'SplodePlugin... )
Someone should notify the original author so he can update the version
on his site.

I had indeed been curious - thanks for letting us know!

Wow, thanks Saq.

That solves the problem of the new core/ older plugin incompatability
- that is amazing!

Unfortunately it looks like I am still missing something else when I
copy the plugin tiddler into my tiddlywiki, as I still get a macro
error for <<showToc>> and then on the reload it hangs (prior to your
fix it was <showToc> :only single parentheses.)

So going back to the basics: Is all I need is the DC plugin tiddler
with the given title and tags? Or does that plugin require another
macro like the Toc plugin?

befuddled,

Gam, that should be all that you need. I don't understand why it would hang on the reload. Can we see your file? Can you post it online or email it to me so that I can diagnose the problem?

Saq,
Thanks for the offer, I'll see what I can do. It's a tiddlywiki with
lots of image galleries (budding artist here) and graphical mods to
the interface, and I haven't got it on line yet, although I'm looking
into that! Sending the file without the associated images and so with
broken links may confuse the issue.
I'tt try to get a test version on line for you to see. Let you know.

cheers

Thanks Gam. My most likely guess is that its a plugin conflict of some kind which is why looking at the file is a must.

Saq
