The primary reason is that I think Markdown is much clerarer and
intuitive than the current formatter. (Why ' for bold? Why three { for
code when almost everything else is two?) Also, since I'm able to use
Markdown in other places, blogs etc, being able to use the same in TW
would reduce the cognitive overhead for my poor brain.
I understand if it's not gonna happend too soon, but at least I want to
make sure you know there is (still) interest for it.

There's little chance that we'd change the out-of-the-box wiki syntax
for TiddlyWiki because of the backwards compatibility issue that you
mention.
