Hi Sunil (hope I spelled that right?) and a big warm welcome to the group,
that goes yo you too Tim!

Glad all is ok. We get a bit jumpy here with the loss of Wavecrest :9( I am
sure you understand.

I really have mixed feelings about all this. On the one hand I am pleased
EMS are ok but on the other I am sorry for Rakesh. He is one of our un-sung
hero's! And I am just trying to get my head around Rakesh not being involved
with EMS. None of our business so no need to comment. It's just we have an
inherent nature to look out for each other (That includes EMS!). I am sure
Rakesh is fine and I will always consider him a friend not only to me but to
all of us. Nuff said there.

So good luck and please try and get some of your E+ owners over here as that
will help generate some interest. At some point I too will test your bikes
and do some full reporting for the forums.

Take care and please keep us updated on any progress,

Rich

Btw, below is Sunil's note to the group:

From Sunil,

I am a current employee at Electric Motion Systems, the manufacturer of the
E+ Electric Bike. I am an electrical engineer by trade and worked on the E+
Hub battery pack as well as had responsibility as the systems engineer for
the entire E+ Bike system. Currently I serve as a business development
manager and product manager in the sales and marketing department. I would
like to be a point of contact to provide both technical and product
development information concerning E+ products. I was also an employee of
Wavecrest Labs and worked on several motor, battery, and display systems for
a variety of projects. In all, I have worked closely in the LEV market for
about 7 years and feel I can offer valuable input.

Yes, welcome Sunil; great to have you on board. We hope you'll be an
active contributor here.

Here are a few marketing questions for you given your job description
with EMS:

Where do you see the most potential market-wise for EMS right now in
this economic environment? Specifically, do you see the security
(police/patrol bikes) and other "commercial" markets as more vibrant
and promising than the recreational market in respect to e-bikes? I
assume EMS is pursuing both--which sector do you think will outperform
over the next couple years?

What are your sales goals for 2009? How many dealers have you
currently signed on? Are there other
e-motor related products EMS is looking at developing, such as ATVs,
scooters, and the like?

I'm not looking to pry here but to simply get a sense of EMS's goals
and strategies as an emerging e-bike business with an exciting product
line. Feel free to respond as generally or specifically as you wish.

Regards,

Larry Hayes

P.S. Unrelated to the above questions but many of our members want to
know--how close are you guys to offering lithium-based batteries,
including lion-based hub packs?

Hello All,

Thanks for the warm welcomes. As a general note, I will try to
respond to all your questions, but in the case I do miss a few here
and there, please do raise them again.

Richard, I understand the your and the groups perspective. EMS is
working on many fronts to ensure that we are around for many years to
come. In addition to E+ product line, we are regularly engaged in
engineering service contract work. This provides us with a steady
stream of revenue which allows us to ride out fluctuations in economic
conditions and ramp up in the sales of new products.

Larry, I will try to answer you questions as best I can without
revealing all of our secrets!!

Law enforcement and security will still be a focus for us in 2009.
Bike Patrol are some the roughest users of our products and provide us
with great feedback with regards to the quality of our products. For
that reason alone it is still and excellent, although costly, market
to pursue. However, this market segment has also been hit hard by the
current economic conditions. State and local gov't funding is very
tight as seen by layoffs in many local police forces around the
nation. So, time will tell if sales in the segment will ever be a
large portion of EMS's sales.

With that said, our primary focus at EMS is still consumer product
sales. We feel that this segment will always be the largest segment
of our sales. Even in these tough economic times we believe that there
is still a large potential for sales and that there are certain unique
segments of consumer/B2B sales that we feel are quite attractive. The
high gas prices of last summer have permanentally changed the
perspective of the US consumer and the belief in alternative modes of
transportation has never been so real.

We currently have 22 dealer locations throughout the US. Many of them
on the west coast and in the South. We will focus on expanding this
network into the northest, and mid-west throughout the spring.
Dealers will be carefully selected based on their location, experience
with LEV products, and overall customer service levels. We would
rather have fewer quality dealers than a large footprint of dealers
that don't fully understand the value of our products.

At this time we are focused on expanding and improving upon our
existing line of E+ Electric Bike products. We are also working on
complimentary products like an auxiliary Lithium battery pack (I will
comment more in some of the other posts). We expect to have this aux
lithium pack available in the July/August time period. Development of
the electronics and software for the aux lithium pack will be directly
applied to a future lithium hub pack.

Regards,
Sunil Gupta

Thanks for joining our group Sunil.
We look forward to your great contributions. I just changed your
status so your posts will be published quickly, without the delay of
moderator approval.
Glad to hear your local dealers remain intact. I think they are one
of your competitive strengths. One of them is very close to me (River
cycles in Glenville, CT) and I tried an early version of your E+ there
almost immediately after he got his hands on it. I was impressed with
the improvements over the TF, especially the relatively easy battery
serviceability and overall waterproofness.
Best,
Joe

Sunil -- That is all GOOD news!

-- Please see our thread here 'E+ Wish list...' where many experienced
TF owners report on features that long experience has let to.

-- It will be good to see where your West Coast dealers are when you
get your website 'dealer locator' map updated.

Sunil,

Superb response to all my questions--truly appreciated to have your
ear and find out what E+ is all about!

The only question that comes to mind right now is exactly what you
mean by engineering service contract work. Please expand on this if
you can as I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to know what this
is all about.

Regards,

Larry

It means things like the Matra project Larry. That sort of thing. EMS get
contracted for projects/product design as well as now making their own
products.

Very interesting reply Sunil, a lot looked straight out of my Matra Business
Plan ;9)

Take care all,

Rich

Larry,

One unique thing about EMS (perhaps a biased opinion) is that we have
the engineering talent among our employees to do just about anything.
We have electrical, electromagnetic, mechanical, software, and test &
evaluation engineers all in house. We also own the advanced equipment
required to fully characterize all of our motors, battery packs,
display systems, and bike systems. Even for projects that are
slightly out of our expertise, we have the knowledge to identify and
manage subcontractors for outsourced projects. All of these, I guess
you can call them, company assets, allow us to win engineering
contract work in a variety of fields.

I hope this answers your questions without being too specific about
projects that we are working on currently or worked on in the past.

Also, i mentioned our police bike plans in my original post but didn't
provide you with a link to the website, here it is: www.electricpolicebikes.com
(sorry for the plug everyone, i couldn't resist!)

Take care,
Sunil
