Kirby Hill tonight, Uma let loose like nobody's bidness and set me
flying at 63.1 mph! Sick stuff as I really wasn't trying for any
records but just cut her loose about 2/3 of the way down the hill...
the rest be history <ggg>!

Postcript: Gnarls Barkely on Letterman (Tivo from earlier in the week)
rules!!! Good old fashioned R&B...with sexy girls in bobby sox on
strings! The (young) babe factor was extreme--gotta see it to
appreciate it! Richard, better than 16 vestal virgins on e-bikes, trust
me!

I'm not jealous (HONEST :-) but please no more speed records. I just don't
want anything happening to our beloved Larry!

You're the man Larry but PLEASE don't try any more speed records. Please,
please please....

Group hug for the achievement!

That's a wonderful story Cliff, at first I thought they were going to say
the chasing train motivated him to go faster (haha), thank God I was wrong.

Great story and really enjoyed that!

Uma's just trying to do 69 with you.

Larry,

just curious what type of cycle computer you're using to measure
speed...

D,

PlanetBike Protoge 9 (hardwired to front wheel and calibrated for 1.2"
tire). I'm guessing 68 mph or so might be possible from the top of
Kirby Hill with no regen but won't be trying that till I get a better
front fork and wheel.

Believe it or not I hit very close to 50 mph in REGEN yesterday before
I pinned the throttle about 200'-300' from the bottom. This hill is SO
steep at the top (and with a bit of a twist to the left that prevents
you from seeing the bottom for quite a while) that I normally brake a
bit in conjunction with REGEN until about 1/3-1/2 way down (I think the
entire hill is about .2 miles long). But yesterday I felt comfortable
enough (from doing the hill so much lately) not to brake at all at the
top and to just let REGEN engage on its own and see how fast the bike
would go in REGEN before that point where I feel safe visibility-wise
to let'er rip.

Cliff,

Great stuff man! Imagine if old Chuck had 1000W beneath him to boot!

Larry

P.S. Pro bikers routinely draft behind a lead rider on a motorcycle for
high speed training, and I'd be surprised if a few TFX's out there
aren't being used the same way.

But Rich, think of Uma and 69 and tell me you wouldn't be tempted <ggg>

Uncle larry, This is all very exciting about yer new land speed record.
Now that you are pushing the limits as our astronut I can feel safe if
I'm hitting 40.

You have covered this in the past but would you mind giving us a fresh
description of your steed?
- motor
- frame & fork
- battery
- tires
- wheels
- controls
- seat & post
- fenders, rack & bag?
- relevant other
- a pic?

Thanks for your reports,
Al
M750X

PS, I might start a new thread on this but sometimes my regen light
comes on and there is no regen. For example when my battery is full
there is no regen but the light comes on. Other times when I'm not
applying the brake the light comes on but no regen braking is
happening. Is your regen at the top due to your putting on the brake a
bit?

Al,

Uma's a stock S750X with factory rear wheel and hub but lightweight mtn
wheel in front (Sun rim I think/Deore LX hub). Running Geax 1.2" Geax
Street Runner in front; TF factory tire in rear. Two of EVTech's 15Ah
lipos wire parallel and mounted on Axiom Odyssey rack (Topeak Bag)
power my sweetie. Watts Up volt/amp meter to take her temperature
(burnt out two of Justin's DrainBrains as the first ones apparently
cannot handle turbo X current). Poor man clip-on aerobars (I think they
were from Performance but can't remember as they were bought years ago
for a road bike) as well as carbon fiber bar ends give me multiple hand
positions (per Uma's request <g>). Freddy fender in front.
Upgraded 53/39 Shimano Ultegra BB and crank mated with 11-28 cassette
to give me a monster 59/11 steep gear for helping her along at 35-40
MPH. I've posted pics here and will try to find one or post something
new.

Re: CC on Kirby hill, it comes on once the bike goes above 20 mph
unless I bypass via throttle. I can't verify that it's engaged without
a Drain Brain (and I know what you mean about it sometimes seeming like
it's not engaged despite the blue light). But I'm thinking it IS indeed
engaged on this hill as I get an added speed burst a few hundred feet
from the bottom when I pin the throttle to disengage it and go full
out.

Pending upgrades (this fall/winter): Fox Terralogic front fork and pro
quality front wheel/hub to ensure a solid comfortable front end. Just
not sure how much I trust the bargain basement Suntour fork that came
with the bike, but at these speeds I'd rather not take a chance.

Cheers,

Larry

Larry, Thanks for the details. I guess that is one of the most advanced
vehicles on the planet!

Does the S frame come in more than one size -- what size do you have? I
have a Tidalforce S frame that was called a Medium 17" but it is termed
a 'compact sized frame' Is this what you have?

Do you still have stock brakes?

Do you have a suspension seatpost?

Thanks,
Al

Al,

Uma's blushing over your kind words about her--thanks for the
compliments! I admit to being spoiled rotten by my sweetie and have
spent all of an hour or so this year on my "real" road bike, a
steel-framed Ritchey that used to be my #1 ride. Poor Ritchey sulks on
the wall in my garage like a spurned lover, and I do admit to feeling
badly about it...till I climb on Uma once again <LOL>

As far as the frame size goes, I'm pretty sure all the S bikes came
with the 17" frame as I have purchased several liquidation frames now
on eBay and I'm fairly certain they're all the same size.
Brakes were upgraded several weeks ago to Shimano XT V-brakes (very
easy upgrade to do yourself if you don't mind leaving the original
cables; takes all of 1/2 hour).

Given the fact the we have by far the most advanced e-bike drivetrain
on the planet, my "mission" with Uma was to see exactly how great our
motors (and bikes) can be when upgraded with a serious battery pack,
pro-quality components and compatible gearing. I haven't been
disappointed, and the bike has started to feel truly like an extension
of my body lately on the road, a feeling I used to get occasionally on
the Ritchey, but never to this extent. I will simply say I have NEVER
had this much fun on a bike before, and as you know the feeling is
extremely addictive!

Cheers,

Larry
