Jerome,
AWESOME! I had looked at this rack and was concerned about exactly
the issues you just solved. Congratulations on a great project and
well described. I especially liked that you explained the issues and
solutions well and didn't dumb it down. One other great thing about
this forum is all the really smart people contributing.

Yes, impressive contribution! Many thanks.

P.S. I have a similar Saris rack for my SX and like it a lot BUT with
some very simple mods, namely extra bungee cord or nylon cord tiedowns
(there's quite a bit of rack movement within the hitch tube that makes
me nervous) to be sure the bike stays snug to the rack (actually the
other way around--to be sure the rack attachment mechanisms don't come
loose from the bike.) IOW I reinforce the front wheel clamp with by
tieing it around the top of the rim. Takes less than a minute and
provides a lot of peace of mind. I also usually repeat the same
process on the bottom of the rear wheel with a piece of nylon cord.

Bottom line: Redundancy is a good thing when it comes to hauling
dynamic loads over rough roads at high speeds, and is very cheap
insurance.
