the Church Manual
Note These dates have been verified by the particular original
Church Manual of The First Church of Christ Scientist,
Boston, Mass. by Mary Baker Eddy, for the year
indicated. The year shown was derived from the printer's
publication code on the last page of each edition at the
bottom on the right hand side. This printing code
indicates the year the particular book was printed, which
may vary from the date indicated by the publisher on the
title page or other location. These codes are noticeable
in editions commencing in 1918 and continuing through
the editions printed in the latter 1960's.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE 89TH MANUAL
Since 1910, there have been serious doubts about the validity
of the 89th edition of the Church Manual which was issued on
December 17 1910, two weeks after Mrs. Eddy's passing.
The Christian Science Sentinel always included a box listing
publications for sale and, without fail, carried the same sentence:
"Each new edition of the Church Manual containing the By-Laws of The
Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston,
Massachusetts, will have special notice in the SENTINEL." The last
Sentinel to carry such a notice was the September 3, 1910, issue
announcing the 88th edition of the Church Manual. The Christian
Science Journal of October 1910 carried a similar announcement.
No such notice ever appeared in either the Sentinel or Journal
regarding publication of the 89th edition. Interestingly, the
sentence in the Sentinel promising to announce each new edition of
the Manual continued to appear until the January 14, 1911 isssue,
yet no formal announcement of the 89th edition was ever printed.
Over the years, the Christian Science Board of Directors insisted
that Mrs. Eddy had given her authorization for the 89th Manual.
(See, for example, Yankee magazine of July 1992) After many years,
the directors showed copies of the proof sheets to some individuals,
but would not show Mrs. Eddy's approval for the changes on the
reverse side of the pages, as was her practice.
Recently, a request for copies of the proof sheets was made to the
new Mary Baker Eddy Library. Copies were sent to the individual
requesting them, and the following can now be verified. Mrs. Eddy
signed the back of five of the eight pages submitted to her with
the one word approval: "Eddy." A proposed statement on page 121:
"The order of Sunday service is sometimes varied by the singing of
a selection immediately after the organ voluntary." was deleted by
Mrs. Eddy and did not appear in the 89th Manual.
She approved the deletion of the notice: "The service should be
preceded and followed by organ or piano music of an appropriate
character in all cases where this is possible." on pages 122, 124,
and 126. These deletions, approved by Mrs. Eddy, were not carried
out in the 89th edition and remain to this day.
She approved the addition of the statement on page 127: "If a
collection is taken, it should be taken in the classes before they
reassemble." Also the addition of the words "and Branch Churches"
was approved for the title at the top of the page. These changes
were carried out in the 89th edition as approved by Mrs. Eddy.
The words, "and Branch Churches" were added to the title "Present
Order of Services in The Mother Church" on page 120. However, the
sheet is not signed on the back by Mrs. Eddy. Neither are the words
"and Branch Churches" deleted by her. In any event, the words "and
Branch churches" were included in the 89th Manual. Interestingly,
these words were not added to the table of contents page [page 14,
thus conforming to the title on page 120] until 1916.
Other changes which appeared in the 89th Manual that were not
approved by Mrs. Eddy include the addition of the date "1911" on the
cover and title page. The 89th edition was issued on December 17,
1910, which made "1911" factually incorrect. Mrs. Eddy's name and
office of Pastor Emeritus were deleted from the page of church
officers on page 21. (Both were restored in 1924.) Also added
without Mrs. Eddy's approval were the words "Discoverer and Founder
of Christian Science and the Author of the Christian Science Text
Book "Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures."
It becomes clear why the proof sheets were denied to the field
for so long. They reveal disobedience in 1910 to Mrs. Eddy's
instructions for the publication of one of her most important books,
the Church Manual. Other changes were made to the Manual over the
years: in 1916, the lower case "t" in "the Mother Church" was
changed to an upper case "T" which altered the meaning from the
concept of a universal reality to a specific institution. In 1913,
the words "Yours in Truth and Love" were removed from the application
forms on pages 115, 117, and 118 and replaced by "I was formerly a
member of the ............. denomination, but have definitely severed
my connection therewith." Also the address number 18 was added to
page 117 even though it never appeared on that page before.
A topical index was added in 1925. In it the by-law titled "Local
Self Government" is called "Local Government." The index heading
entitled "Directors" significantly omits page 26 which contains the
by-law requiring Mrs. Eddy's approval for the perpetuation of the
Directors as church functionaries. Also the by-law "For the Mother
Church only" on page 104 was omitted from the index. The index was
finally removed from the Manual in 1951.
In 1931, the footnote contradicting Mrs. Eddy's version of the
Church's history was added on page 19.
In 1971 the "Editor's Note" at the bottom of page 130 was added.
This note announces that the legislature of Massachusetts changed
the state statue which Mrs. Eddy had used to establish the 1892
Deed of Trust. This 1971 change permits non-citizens to become
directors of the church. The editor's note neglects to state that
this change was initiated by the directors themselves. (See Christian
Science After 1910, between pages 100 and 101 for an illustration of
the petition submitted by the Christian Science Board of Directors to
the Massachusetts House of Representatives.) Mrs. Eddy had many able
lawyers among her students and could have sought this change herself
if she thought it were desirable. In view of all the numerous,
unauthorized changes made since 1910, one must conclude that the 88th
edition of the Church Manual is the closest to Mrs. Eddy's intent for
the government of her Church.
.
The addition of the three
words, "and Branch Churches," first appeared in the 89th
edition of the "Church Manual," which was printed on
Monday, December 5, 1910, and circulated throughout the
world-wide Field shortly thereafter, in January, 1911. This
89th Edition was never advertised in either, "The
Christian Science Journal," or, "The Christian Science
Sentinel," which was the 'FIRST' and 'ONLY' time any change
was made to the content of the "Church Manual" that
was not announced to the Christian Science Field
PRIOR to the changes being made and brought out in a
new edition of the "Church Manual." Mrs. Eddy had
established this procedure for announcing any and all changes
to any of her published writings.
The final and authentic edition of the "Church Manual" which
received Mary Baker Eddy's approval was the 88th Edition.
It was the 88th Edition of the "Church Manual" which
was on her desk the night she passed on; namely,
December 3, 1910.
The accurate chronicling of the
history of the Cause discloses the facts that the
five-member board of directors made repeated attempts to
"convince" Mrs. Eddy that she was leaving the Church in a
deplorable condition if she did not do one of two things;
namely:
1. Write a new By-law conveying her
Leadership authority to the board of directors at the time
of her earthly demise, . . .or
2. Withdraw all of the 29 "Estoppel Clauses" which are contained
within the "Church Manual."
Mrs. Eddy repeatedly responded that she could not change what she
did not write, and emphatically stated, "God wrote the "Church
Manual," and it is up to the Church to obey its By-laws."
[see: Tomlinson, Shannon, Mimms, Fitzpatrick, Smith,
Frye, Still, Sargeant, Hanna, Dittemore, Dickey,
"Historical Sketches" and "Reminiscences"].
Thrice during Mr. Dickey's tenure while he was serving as one
of Mrs. Eddy secretaries, she extracted from him the
promise that, after her departure, he would write his
recollections of what she observed transpiring whilst employed
by Mrs. Eddy. Her second of these three requests was
not oral, but rather, it was in writing, and in the
envelope that was delivered to Mr. Dickey was contained a
separate page whereon Mrs. Eddy wrote the following in her
own hand, "Mary Baker G. Eddy. . .written at 87 years
of age." This page appeared in Mr. Dickey's
"Memoirs."
The 'signature' was rather shaky, and was most
definitely the product of an elderly individual. However,
the 'signature' which appears across the back of the
'proof-sheets' containing the changes now embodied in the 89th
"Church Manual" is the stylized, trademarked [church
director owned] signature of "Mary Baker Eddy" identical
to that signature which now appears on the title
page of "Science and Health with Key to the
Scriptures" -- [an example of Mrs. Eddy's signature when a
much younger woman].
Should Mrs. Eddy have signed the back of the 'proof-sheets'
during
the last two days of her human sojourn -- the proof-sheets
containing the changes now embodied within the 89th "Church
Manual" -- her signature on the back of the proof sheets
[her uniform way of approving all changes to her
writings] would have been a diminution of the shaky
signature she presented to Mr. Dickey for him to include in
the account he had promised Mrs. Eddy that he would
write and publish for the world, AFTER her departure!
Thus, the signature that now appears across the back of
the proof sheets of page 120 in the "Church Manual,"
is a signature that was allegedly affixed to the
'proof-sheets' by Mrs. Eddy TWO YEARS
AFTER having supplied an example of her signature
to Mr. Dickey when she was 87 years of
age!
So impatient were the directors to seize control of
the world-wide Christian Science movement at the
moment Mrs. Eddy passed, that two of the board's agents;
namely, Mr. Archibald McClellan and Mr. Allison Stewart,
were authorized in 1907, to contact Plimpton Press, in
Cambridge, Massachusetts, to have the plates created
incorporating the additional words, "and Branch Churches," as
are now seen in the 89th [fraudulent] Edition of the
"Church Manual."
These plates were made and preserved in oiled chamoised wrappings
in the safe at Plimpton Press, awaiting the moment when the directors,
hours after Mrs. Eddy's passing, could call for the
immediate [unannounced and unadvertised] printing of the
89th Edition of the "Church Manual," and unbeknownst
to the entire Christian Science Field, call upon all
reading rooms, world-wide, to relinquish and return all
editions of the 88th Edition of the "Church Manual" to
Boston, only to have them [the 88th Edition] immediately
replaced with the fraudulent 89th edition of which Mrs.
Eddy had absolutely no knowledge, neither had she ever
given any instruction to have it printed and brought
out and circulated throughout the Field!
Several months before Mrs. Eddy passed, the directors
called upon General Streeter [Mrs. Eddy's lawyer] to
enter with him into a private contractual agreement of
employment. The directors hired General Streeter to present
himself to Mrs. Eddy and explain to her that the Cause
was going to fall into ruination at the time of her
demise IF SHE DID NOT ELECT TO IMMEDIATELY ENACT ONE OF
THE TWO OPTIONS I HAVE CITED ABOVE.
While on the street-car making his way to Chestnut Hill to see
Mrs. Eddy, General Streeter realized how terribly
inappropriate it was for him to try to 'convince' Mrs. Eddy
that she was wrong and that her directors were right.
Immediately, upon arrival at Chestnut Hill, General Streeter
told Mrs. Eddy what the directors had 'hired' him to
do on their behalf. She asked General Streeter to
sit down in the library as she had to attend to
something at her desk in her office.
Very shortly thereafter, Mrs. Eddy descended the stairway and
presented General Streeter with an envelope containing a NEW BY-LAW
that she instructed him to return to the directors and
have immediately announced in the "Journal" and
"Sentinel," printed, and brought out to the Field as quickly
as possible. You may read this By-law at the top of
page 70 in the "Church Manual." It reads:
"Pastor Emeritus to be Consulted. SECT. 18."The
Mother Church shall not make a church By-Law, nor enter
into a business transaction with a Christian Scientist
in the employ of Rev. Mary Baker Eddy, without first
consulting her on said subject and adhering strictly to her
advice thereon."
It wasn't too long after this incident that Mrs. Eddy wrote, in
her own hand, "It took a combination of sinners that was fast to harm
me." Mary Baker Eddy, November 28, 1910.
Thus, just days before her passing from our sight, the great and
divinely ordained Leader of the Cause of Christian Science
disclosed to the world that she knew whereof she spoke when
delivering her last warning to her Church just four hours
before she passed when declaring to Mr. Calvin Frye,
Miss. A. Still and Miss. L. Sargent, "BEWARE OF THE
ENEMY WITHIN THE GATES!"
Today, this same unrestrained and unrespectful
enemy is working day and night to bury Mary Baker Eddy
in a $50,000,000.00 Mausoleum [misnamed "Library"].
When will the Christian Science Field awaken? Consider
the current assault of the enemy WITHIN THE CAUSE of
which Mrs. Eddy warned, as seen in the director's
officious legal initiative to gain world-wide ownership of
the term, "Christian Science," through the spurious
manipulation of 'trademark' law, to say nothing of their
complete disrespect and disregard of the First Amendment
of The Constitution of The United States of America!
In Unity of Good,

This divine plan which Mrs. Eddy worked so
industriously and endlessly to incorporate at the behest of
Mind went unobeyed, and the decline and deterioration
of the Cause of Christian Science, and the rapid
decline in both the quantity and quality of legitimate,
dynamic examples of genuine Christian Science healings
commenced to descend upon what soon became a withering
movement!
Thus, it was Mr. McClellan who, in conjunction with Mr.
Allison Stewart [Mrs. Eddy's Publishing Agent] who,
knowing full well the intent of the directors to
immediately commandeer Mrs. Eddy's Cause at the time of her
demise, approached Plimpton Press and contracted with
that firm to have the plates created to enable the
implementation of the director's disobedient scheme of
kidnapping Mrs. Eddy's "man child" and holding it hostage to
this very day!
This information is prolifically substantiated within the now
closed Archives of the Boston church! Years of meticulous purging of
the Archives has resulted in the removal of almost every trace of this
conspiracy having transpired! However, several imminently
important documents have managed to escape the detection of
those who have been doing the purging of the Church's
historical records and files, and, thank God, valid and firm
confirmation of this diabolical scheme can be authenticated
and substantiated with prima facie evidence even to
this very day!
Having worked for the Church and continuing to enjoy a very
healthy association with a network of remarkably dedicated and alert
workers still employed within the Church, has enabled me to acquire
and maintain a constant source of reliable and verifiable
information about the history of the Church down through the
years.
The 'real' Christian Scientists still
working within the Boston organization have found every
imaginable means conceivable to express their gratitude for
the decade of work in which I was engaged in freeing
"Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," from the
unconstitutional and illegal copyright imprisonment it suffered By
Special Act of Congress, again, in 1971!
I am grateful for the privilege and occasion to disseminate
this vitally important information to all "honest
seekers for Truth," who, today, constitute Mrs. Eddy's
Remnant.
