Almost finished the doctorate and finally considereing getting a
database!. I'm looking for one that has 1) tags 2) autosave 3) import
documents.

I've looked through the various posts in this forum and played around
with a few programs, but can't find one with all three.

Evernote has 1 + 2, but, as far as I can tell, doesn't import
documents, such as word and PDF, and the text editor is not very
sophisticated.

Asksam has great import ability, but I find the traditional folder/file
system unappealing.

Ideally too, I'd like it to have a citation importer and manager. But
I think that's too much to ask at the moment, until perhaps Zotero
introduces 'integration with Microsoft Word and other word processors.'

Many thanks,
John,
Oxford

Hi John,

there are 2 software tools which combine knowledge management and a
bibliographic database, you might have overlooked:

Citavi http://www.citavi.de
Bibliographix http://www.bibliographix.de

The drawback:
it seems that Bibliographix is only available with a german user
interface and the english version of Citavi (which is a very promising
app) seems not to be finished yet.
Maybe you want to have a look at them although.

I'm not sure if they can import documents.

There is also Devonthink (www.devontechnologies.com), which is only
available for MacOS (you seem to work on a PC?).
Maybe you'll find an alternative for MS Windows here
http://www.stevenberlinjohnson.com/movabletype/archives/000230.html
or here http://www.gadgetopia.com/post/3534
or here (complete search results
http://www.google.com/search?q=devonthink+windows&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:de:official&client=firefox-a
)

Kind regards,

Martin

Hi,
with Bibliographix you can switch between a German and an English user
interface. If you install at a non-German system, the English user
interface should be activated by default - but may of course be changed
later on demand. You can download the free basic version from
www.bibliographix.com

Try WIKINDX:
http://www.wikindx.sourceforge.net

Because it runs through a web browser, it doesn't have 2) above but it
does have 1) and 3) and has the citation importer/manager you're
looking for. It is also free.

Mark.
