[9:00]  In Kenzo: Hi! We'll be doing a Q&A with your questions in less
than 15 minutes, please forward me your questions for our guests.
[9:00]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: > reach
[9:00]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: + competition
[9:01]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: competition is a key point for
motiviation & success
[9:01]  Biji Mornington: don't get hung up on needing a headquarters
in SL
[9:01]  In Kenzo: We will switch streams to get more people on this
audio before we go to Q&A, thanks for your patience with the audio.
[9:01]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: leaderboard on the web
[9:01]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: careful as it's a double edged sword
[9:01]  Biji Mornington: create scripts and objects that don't care

[9:01]  In Kenzo: Techniques for finding success in fundraising:
grassroots support
[9:01]  Biji Mornington: last year RFL SL had more than 40 fundraising
teams
[9:01]  Glitteractica Cookie: For those of you who are interested in
getting a free nonprofit office, please email su...@techsoup.org
[9:01]  Biji Mornington: they displayed the team's fundraising totals
on web site
[9:02]  Biji Mornington: but avoid too much competition; need a
balance
[9:02]  2020Vision Obviate: common mistakes that educators make in SL
by Rafi Santo
[9:03]  2020Vision Obviate: Works in the teen grid
[9:03]  2020Vision Obviate: Learned over the last two years with young
people
[9:03]  Biji Mornington: jumping off transcribing also; can someone
pick up?
[9:03]  2020Vision Obviate: First - recreating poor pedogogy in face
to face fail in virtual env
[9:03]  In Kenzo: Rafi is talking about techniques and teaching
methodology
[9:04]  In Kenzo: Enormous amounts of notecards
[9:04]  In Kenzo: The web is a better place for text than virtual
worlds
[9:04]  2020Vision Obviate: i.e classic lecture formats such as
notecards, whiteboards, lectures.
[9:04]  In Kenzo: ironic;-)
[9:04]  Dewey Jung: passivity is a killer in sl!
[9:04]  2020Vision Obviate: he is giving an example now.
[9:05]  Cyrus Huffhines: streaming server full
[9:05]  In Kenzo: we will get you into this discussion shortly, thanks
for sharing your thoughts and transcripts!
[9:05]  In Kenzo: Yes, streaming audio is full for now, we have 86
people here now. Will be switching audio streaming servers in a few
minutes.
[9:05]  In Kenzo: After Rafi finishes. He's talkinga bout basic
pedagogical approaches, learning by doing.
[9:06]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: sl platform makes a strong approach for
a variety of educational approached due to the > communitities you can
reach
[9:06]  2020Vision Obviate: SL makes a strong point to learning by
doing because of a strong community at fingertips and can do things
with lower risk
[9:06]  Dewey Jung: interesting question: does SL make traditional
pedagogy effectively obsolete?
[9:06]  In Kenzo: We will take questions in a few minutes for
discussion with our guests, IM me with your questions
[9:06]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: if you don't have an interactive
approach to learning in sl, you are at a > disadvantage
[9:07]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: sl has challenges:
[9:07]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: no body language
[9:07]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: hard to know what's up w/ your learner
[9:07]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: he realizes it's ironic
[9:07]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: as he's sitting and talking w/ us and
we could be sleeping
[9:07]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: final point
[9:07]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: important to think of design
[9:08]  Dewey Jung: so SL makes progressive education easier, but also
more necessary
[9:08]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: educators are designers already when
they put together a lesson plan
[9:08]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: in sl it > your options
[9:08]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: thinking of format of learning space
[9:08]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: look around
[9:08]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: some are in the front
[9:08]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: some back
[9:08]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: we all come and plug in as we like
[9:09]  Dewey Jung: the entire learning environment is subject to
revision in sl
[9:09]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: thinking of the immersive envrionment
has a > impact on learning
[9:09]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: example from summer camp 2 years ago
[9:09]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: had a clubhouse
[9:09]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: started every day int eh clubhouse
[9:09]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: everyone knew it
[9:09]  Dewey Jung: it's funny that the text transcription is ahead of
my audio stream!
[9:09]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: spent day in the factory very active
[9:10]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: ended the day at the campfire w/
marshmallows, etc
[9:10]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: the spaces represented / mediated the
process of learning that couldn't be expressed thru text or voice
[9:10]  Dewey Jung: can't do this in real life "turn the sun down to
midnight" :-)

[9:10]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: short break for audio reconfig
[9:10]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: we're maxed out
[9:10]  Glitteractica Cookie: we have maxxed out the number of people
who can hear this audio stream
[9:11]  Glitteractica Cookie: so we are switching servers
[9:11]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: going to switch streams so > pple can
listen in
[9:11]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: going to text chat
[9:11]  Dewey Jung: 83 now on the sim

[9:11]  Rik Riel: There were some questions about volunteering?
[9:11]  In Kenzo: On volunteer: Zazoom Zimminy: In alignment with our
recent conversation re volunteering, how do you best keep track of and
connect people who want to volunteer with people who need volunteers?
Are ther some best practices in SL?
[9:12]  Dewey Jung: why is it "easier" to get volunteers in SL than in
RL?
[9:12]  Rik Riel: Q: We have a question coming in for Q&A on
volunteers, how to keep track and connect volunteers with people who
need volunteers. You're getting some of that now Lori!
[9:12]  Rik Riel: volunteer tracking? Anyone?
[9:12]  Glitteractica Cookie: i can answer the volunteer one too... we
have a volunteer page on our wiki
[9:13]  Glitteractica Cookie: and we have a volunteer manager
[9:13]  Glitteractica Cookie: zazzoom zimminy
[9:13]  Glitteractica Cookie: and we have all the volunteer roles
organzed
[9:13]  Glitteractica Cookie: and so people can sign up for volunteer
tasks, no matter how small
[9:13]  Glitteractica Cookie: there are roles for everyone
[9:13]  Lorelei Junot: we have a volunteer coordiantor for the whole
group
[9:14]  Lorelei Junot: we have group heads
[9:14]  Lorelei Junot: when people want to volunteer we find out what
they like
[9:14]  Glitteractica Cookie: you can see our volunteer page at
npsl.wikispaces.com and click on volunteers
[9:14]  Khrys Kanto: count me in
[9:14]  Lorelei Junot: and then lay out the possibilities and put them
in touch with a gorup leaders
[9:14]  Skeeboo Tammas: are there any volunteer software programs out
there that have been adapted to second life yet? there are a few
commercial "volunteer manager" programs available
[9:14]  Glitteractica Cookie: for audio-- you are going to have to
press stop and play again
[9:14]  Buffy Beale: Yay sound is good for me now
[9:14]  Glitteractica Cookie: not that i know of skeebo
[9:15]  Rik Riel: we don't use any software at GK as far as I know
[9:16]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: Zara asks: when you talk about
leveraging virtual worlds to get press - what types of publicity are
you talking aout?
[9:17]  Glitteractica Cookie: 86 avatars w00t!
[9:17]  Lorelei Junot: I think second life is becoming an option for
distance learning
[9:17]  Lorelei Junot: along with moodle, blackboard
[9:17]  Dewey Jung: no question
[9:18]  Dewey Jung: e-inclusion is harder, but possible
[9:18]  Glitteractica Cookie: and now there is SLoodle
[9:18]  Cibervoluntarios Courtois: It' s ok
[9:18]  Lorelei Junot: many educators are looking at second life as a
distance learning platform
[9:18]  Lorelei Junot: and many companies are using sl to train new
employees
[9:18]  Lorelei Junot: and to have seminars so their workers do not
have to travel
[9:18]  Lorelei Junot: we have a bank on one of ourislands
[9:18]  Dewey Jung: e-learning includes distance learning, but also
includes other things
[9:18]  Lorelei Junot: using sl to train bank tellers in customer
service
[9:19]  Skeeboo Tammas: http://www.sloodle.com
[9:19]  Skeeboo Tammas: err http://www.sloodle.org/
[9:19]  Skeeboo Tammas: :)
[9:19]  Glitteractica Cookie: press-- we have received a lot of press
[9:21]  Penguin Kuhn: press page on our wiki: http://npsl.wikispaces.com/Press+Coverage
[9:21]  Buteo Ruttan: misleading info can be bad press
[9:22]  Penguin Kuhn: and our volunteering page on the wiki:
http://npsl.wikispaces.com/volunteer_roles
[9:22]  Buffy Beale: 1/2 page spread in the A sections for Bridges in
local paper
[9:22]  In Kenzo: Tag your photos here today npsl and npbestpractices
so we can find you again!
[9:23]  HandyLand Fairymeadow: Zara says: very helpful info ty,
imprssed it's not just in second life
[9:23]  Penguin Kuhn: and you can see our blog here: http://www.nonprofitcommons.org
[9:23]  Veri Oddfellow: Sorry so late today, y'all. Brad Lewis here

[9:24]  In Kenzo: google alters are awesome
[9:24]  Glitteractica Cookie: tagging NPSL on del.icio.us and flickr
[9:26]  Buteo Ruttan: question: We plan to help the disabled access

usability of the client. also, anyone interested in joining this
effort please contact me...
[9:26]  Buffy Beale: get involved in the nonprofit commons
[9:27]  Glitteractica Cookie: yeah-- the NPC is a great place to start
[9:27]  In Kenzo: Thank you Jade, Rafi, Jimbo, Glitteractica, Lorelei
and Rik for helping us field these questions! Keep your comments and
questions coming in.
[9:27]  Ozma Malibu: that is the answer, glitter
[9:27]  Namav Abramovic: Our nonprofit is to bring disabled users into
SL
[9:28]  Lorelei Junot: We are wroking with Heron Sancatuary also - we
just got a grant to create a new orientation center
[9:28]  Lorelei Junot: for people with chronic health problems and
disabilities
[9:28]  Carmen Gray: /organizing your non-profit here in sl and when u

[9:29]  Namav Abramovic: I am here representing Heron Sanctuary
[9:29]  Anika Pastorelli: Note: users w/ disabilities (more politicaly
correct than disabled users)
[9:29]  Carmen Gray: yes
[9:29]  Carmen Gray: in agreement with this
[9:29]  Veri Oddfellow: Can we please use ability focussed language?
"People with disabilities"? Not "Disabled people"? Thanks
[9:30]  Veri Oddfellow: Make that Person-first
[9:30]  Glitteractica Cookie: sorry- i di dnot mean to offend, it's
pretty nerve wracking on the audio end of things here
[9:30]  Biji Mornington: good point
[9:30]  Bhikku Beeks: Of course, apologies Veri.

[9:35]  Carmen Gray: yes
[9:35]  In Kenzo: We are under construction now, so now's a great time
to connect with Penguin Kuhn or Glitteractica Cookie
[9:35]  Buteo Ruttan: oh, then won't the communities be divided?
[9:35]  Penguin Kuhn: megan@techsoup or su...@techsoup.org,
respectively
[9:36]  In Kenzo: hopefully not, we will keep them closely connected
buteo
[9:36]  Biji Mornington: can someeone give us the url for blog?

[9:41]  Serene Jewell: Thanks everyone. Great presentations and
information and ideas.
[9:41]  Buteo Ruttan: thanks for the great meeting! see y'all next
week...

[9:41]  Jimbo Hoyer: Reminder that Virtually SPeaking is every
THursday at 6pm SLT
[9:41]  Glitteractica Cookie: can you explain to us what virtually
speaking is
[9:42]  Jimbo Hoyer: sure. It's a weekly interview show.
[9:42]  Glitteractica Cookie: o, cool
[9:42]  Jimbo Hoyer: We've had guests like Sam Seder, John Dean, Glenn
Greenwald

[9:42]  Namav Abramovic: when can I drop by to talk to the person who
specializes in connecting my nonprofit other nonprofits for
collaboration?
[9:43]  Namav Abramovic: is the "cconnecting my nonprofit to other
nonprofits" point person Glitter, or someone else?
[9:44]  Glitteractica Cookie: yes
[9:44]  Glitteractica Cookie: me
[9:44]  Glitteractica Cookie: and penguin

[9:42]  In Kenzo: those of you interested in advocacy, programming for
the displaced and homeless, a small working group will meet shortly

[9:44]  GinaMarie Latte: this is my first time attending a SL event.
As a complete newbie to SL, I can attest to the fact that it is very
difficult for someone who has never played a lot of virtual games to
learn enough about SL to find this conference. I would have loved a
brief overview of what I should have expected to know I should get an
early start in SL before making an attempt getting to a meeting.
[9:44]  Glitteractica Cookie: but really coming to the meetings is the
best first step
[9:44]  Rik Riel: So glad you were able to going us GinaMarie!
[9:45]  Glitteractica Cookie: there is a steep learning curve with
this tool, ginamarie, but you seem to have done great
[9:45]  Rik Riel: I mean "join us"
[9:45]  Penguin Kuhn: namav and others, we are me...@techsoup.org
(Penguin Kuhn) and su...@techsoup.org (Glitteractica Cookie)
[9:46]  GinaMarie Latte: I will be reporting back to AAUW about this
conference and what I think about SL. After 3 days of playing here, I
feel more comfortable.
[9:46]  In Kenzo: there are tutorials on the web, but right now no
consolidated nonprofit orientation exists. maybe one of you will build
that.
[9:46]  Penguin Kuhn: we have a number of newbie resources too on the
wiki: http://npsl.wikispaces.com/cool+list+main
[9:46]  Glitteractica Cookie: this will be available by text chat and
podcast later
[9:47]  Ozma Malibu: ginamarie: do you have contacts? email addresses?
would you like a gentler introduction?
[9:47]  Rik Riel: I have fantasies of having a trasncript of the
audio. don't know if that will haveppen
[9:47]  Coreina Grace: Thanks everyone, great panel!
[9:47]  Kali Idziak: yes, good question Ozma... I'm here to help most
of the time and have a meeting with another newbie on Monday to help
out
[9:47]  Glitteractica Cookie: no, just raw text chat and a podcast, i
think
[9:47]  GinaMarie Latte: I have an AAUW friend who is active in SL who
has offered to meet me and show me around so I'll get up to speed
quickly
[9:47]  Glitteractica Cookie: we used a transcription service for last
event
[9:47]  Buffy Beale: We're getting up a mentor group for the NPC, just
taking longer than expected
[9:48]  Glitteractica Cookie: if you want their info
[9:48]  Ozma Malibu: ginamarie, I really recommend coming to this
meeting again next week. you will have a good time.
[9:48]  Rik Riel: For the record: In Kenzo rocks. Rhiannon is my hero.
And Penguin is amazing.
[9:48]  In Kenzo: woot, got video!
[9:49]  In Kenzo: only a minute of audio though, 3 min of machinima.
will get that to you soon rik.
[9:49]  Glitteractica Cookie: umm..what about me rik?
[9:49]  Glitteractica Cookie: :)
[9:49]  Rik Riel: that's fine. not really exciting video
[9:49]  In Kenzo: Glitter is Fabulous!
[9:49]  Rik Riel: And my heart belongs to Glitteractica
[9:49]  Glitteractica Cookie: jeez
[9:49]  Lore Foulsbane: where will info on the video/audio be posted?
[9:49]  Frans Charming: hahaha
[9:49]  Yohan Althouse: I tried to capture all audio, video, and
stills shots
[9:49]  GinaMarie Latte: one simple distraction here is to see
speakers over the name bubbles. It was extremely distracting to the
point, I could have done just as good just listening to a voice stream
outside of SL. Can someone remove or eleminate the name bubbles for
everyone in the audience but keep the names above speakers?
[9:49]  In Kenzo: We post most things to nonprofitcommons.org but
please tag everything npsl
[9:49]  Glitteractica Cookie: audio and video will be available on the
wiki
