First off, a disclaimer: I'm old school, all of my bikes are steel w/
down tube shifters, and I'm not concerned with being fast. What
matters to me is that my bikes are bomb-proof, comfortable, and that
they are put together without compromises in terms of the gearing/
components I happen to favor.
Given that context, I'm pretty impressed with the Tricross Comp.
Looks like a lot of bike for the money. I like that it comes with
700x32 tires. (Sounds slow and heavy doesn't it? Give it a try on
chipseal and see what you think.) I like the triple crank with a 50
big ring. Those wider tires (I weigh in the upper 180's and run mine
at 60 psi front, 80 in back) and that sensible crank (which encourages
spinning, rather than mashing) add up to increased comfort on longer
rides. I'd fiddle with the stem angle to get the bars up some which
will save your lower back at the end of a long day. If you want to
get more aero, just get in the drops and bend your elbows.
Add a rack, bags, lights, replace the saddle, and you're in rando
business.
