We all as cyclists make decisions as to what is safe and what is not safe.   If I decide to ride the service road of the Dallas North Tollway at 2am then it is only resonable for me to expect that I am greatly increasing the odds that I will get hit by a car.  If I participate in a club ride that has a section of bad road, but chose to ride because I like the route, then I have taken that responsibilty upon myself.

It seems to me that this cyclist is attempting to shift the responsibility for his decision to the city. As an avid rider,  It's easy to always take the side of the cyclist in every debate, however, this can come back to bite us if we are not careful.

Does this suit seek to force the city to fix this road or is it for the plantiff's monitary gain?

My point here is that we need to be careful what we ask for.  Which is easier, to push Governments, state or local, into changing existing roads or having them ban cyclists from any road because of  safety issues (two lane, no approved shoulders, heavy traffic, etc...)

I do not relish the thought of having to spend my cycling years on an approved bike path.

Just food for thought

Yes.  He said the poor condition of the road caused the bike wreck. This is a two lane road, very little shoulder, in very poor condition and heavily traveled.  Manor has no plans to repair.  I wouldn't ride on it, and I kind of understand why they banned bikes, but they should ban foot traffic as well.  Or fix the road.

The council denied the claim because the accident occurred outside Manor's jurisdiction, but it forced officials to look at bicycling in the city, Tate said. "

Am I reading this correctly, that a cyclist is suing the city because he was injured in a bike wreck on that road?  Anyone know why he filed suit?

I live in NE Austin, about 5 miles from Manor.  I can easily ride from my house out to Manor on back roads.  I've probably travsersed the city of Manor on a bicycle 100 times at least.

The road that they are banning cyclists on, Blake Manor Road, used to be a great place to ride 5 or 6 years ago.  But with all the new subdivisions that are going up in that area, it's become a very poor place to ride.  There are other ways to get in and out of Manor that are a bit more bicycle tolerable, although not exactly bicycle friendly mostly due to the newcomers in the area.

I don't agree with the way that Manor is handling this, but then again, I'm not surprised either.  There's a big disconnect between Austin and Manor when it comes to bicycle policy.  Manor has the opportunity to be a very bicycle friendly suburb due to the ease of transit and proximity to Austin's downtown.  But for now, small town think seems to rule the day.
