Satellite TV on the boat - Slingbox
I've been using a Slingbox get satellite TV at the boat on my notebook computer. Slingbox is a $100. device you connect to your home TV system and internet connection. It sends your home TV signal out to the internet which you then watch remotely from anywhere there is an internet connection. In my marina, WiFi is provided "free". There... more »

Serious electrolysis problem
Hi everyone, First post here. Found the group while looking for a solution for a serious electrolysis problem on my Nonsuch 26 sailboat. My zincs are lasting only about 6 weeks. I ordered a galvanic Isolator over the weekend from Defender. Maybe this will solve the problem. Even if it does, I'd like to understand the root... more »

Teak Deck Maintenance
Curmudgeon's decks are 29 years old and I've had her for 17 years. Contrary to conventional wisdom, I use the pressure washer, broad fan, and at least 12" off the deck for heavy duty cleaning, and a bucket of water, squirt of dishwashing soap, and a tablespoon of bleach for normal cleaning. The bleach does wonders for the green stuff that grows in humid climates.... more »

Fw: (T&T: & TWL2:) Re: Alternator fusing
(POSTED FOR SCOTT WELCH BY t...@yandina.com) ...It is not good practice to fuse the alternator circuit, especially with a circuit breaker, because if the fuse blows or someone turns off the breaker with that kind of current flowing it will permanently damage the rectifiers in the alternator. To minimize risk, I would suggest restoring the original engine wiring... more »

Alternator fusing
What would be the recomendation to install over current protection in the alternator outout wire to the house bank. I have two battery banks connected though a combiner. The alternator is wired directly to the house bank. The starting bank is conneced to the combiner. There are no switches or breakers or isloators in these wires.... more »

Bandersnatch
Norm, neither your earthlink nor donutsshop address work for some unknown reason-Apologies to the list-Norm expressed concern about the proposed battery bank being under the sole. I understand Norm, but I think my ocean voyaging days are over. We're pretty much fair weather sailors these days and my bilge area under the sole... more »

battery bank hook-up
Thanks Arild! Actually, I was entertaining the thought of just a single bank for everything except possibly a generator starting battery and my two golf-cart "bank" in the forepeak for the windlass. Philosophically, I also like the idea of Ann-Marie's little Walmart group 24 replacing the big bank when at... more »

battery bank hook-up
What ever way is mechanically easiest. Balancing cables is male bovine excrement unless you are starting a 10,000 horsepower diesel and need continuous maximum CCA from all batteries. Just use cables heavy enough for expected loads and use the easiest mechanical layout. Scenario 1. Drawing normal loads - voltage drop inequalities are less than natural variation on cell matching so a waste of time trying to correct by adjusting cable lengths. 0.1% accuracy in the cables is a waste of time when batteries vary more than 10 times as much from natural inequalities.... more »
