Thanks Carla, Bob, Carol, Chuck and Tony for giving input to this
article. It is front page of the Adventure section from yesterday.

Here is a link for the online version.

Nice writeup Craig Hill.

My tips would be to get off a upright bike and onto a recumbent with a
fairing :) I also would add to the lighting tip to put lights on your
helmet, backpack etc... anything to make yourself look bigger,
reflective stripes on clothing, gloves, bags that catch attention of
people driving with limited visibility.

And get a winter bike unless your rich... the accelerated wear from
riding in the rain, muck is pretty intense on the entire bike...
bottom brackets, headsets, hubs. If it moves, water and debris is
getting in and grinding away. Which brings up... CLEAN BEFORE
LUBING. Lubing a dirty drivetrain may quite it down, but that lube is
now acting like cutting oil... helps keep the debris sharp and in
place.

I second the congrats on another great TWBC article. As for me, I highly recommend the Planet Bike Superflash. This little clip-on light makes you look like an ambulance ($24 at REI). Nice stocking stuffer, too.

I like aluminum frames for commuting/rain riding since they are cheap, light, and don't rust. I had a LeMond carbon/steel frame rust out on me a few years. A sad day.
