I am registered and all set for the conference, I CAN"T WAIT!

I have a nephew who is 13, He and I have talked alot about the
conference. He has shown a great deal of intrest in the conference and
a few of the topics. He has ask me multible times if he can go with me
and after talking it over with his mother/my sister she feels that he
to could learn something by attending. the topics he would be there
for are "Neglect" on saturday at 11am and the "Open Session" at 3:30
on sunday. He would only be there for those topics my sister would
also attend with him so that I can keep my focus on the topis and not
on him.
I would like to know how EVERYBODY feels about this and PLEASE BE
HONEST. nothing you say would offend me and every opinion matters to
me.
last thing..I need to know the cost for the two of them to attend for
those topics.

Thanks

Hi,

I think it's wonderful that your nephew would like to attend these sessions. However, we have this conference for adults with CP because we have no other resources and connections and we need this. This is the one time of the year where we can meet and talk with other adults with CP and share on many levels that we can't anywhere else.

In past years, we have had parents come to the conference and we generally ask that they don't come to certain sessions in order to give us adults the ability to talk without constraints about issues that affect us in our lives, that need to be discussed without them being present.

We have had parents help us at certain sessions with writing things down on the board, and for open discussion sessions, so please tell your nephew, I'm thrilled that he'd like to come but this is not for teenagers at the present moment. Caretakers are usually present at most of the sessions but again, there are some that their clients ask that they not be present for some of them as well.

Just my thoughts,

Dina

I think Dina has some good points. A 13 year old would be a distraction.   I'm not sure I understand about the sister.  Is she acting as a PCA?  That of course would be fine.

Hi all,

I agree however at some point you might have many request from teens and I think maybe one session in the future might not be a bad idea. We could possibly help them .i know if I was a teen I think looking upp too others with CP would have been very benefical

I'm new to this group and a child of the 60s. I think the teens were
when I started to become aware of the reality of CP unfortunately with
little involvement of older people with CP. I think maybe I would of
had a different capacity to deal with some of situations of life if I
would had that experience. I think you might want to rethink this.

Excuse me Dina, correct me if I'm wrong but you are not attending this
year's conference. Yet you feel entitled to express your opinion about
an issue on a conference that you are not even attending. That says a
lot doesn't it? ? ?

We constantly harp about how we need to educate young people. I can't
think of a better way to do just that. And it doesn't mean that he have
to be present for the gender session.
