Hi Committees!

Jennifer, T.A.'s Pedestrian and Health advocate forwarded this my way to pass along to all of you.  I know you're great at making your voices heard and speaking out to your electeds, and this is a great chance to direct a little energy towards the national conversation of transportation equity.

Thanks,

Alanna

Dear Jennifer,

We know that all Americans need affordable transportation options in order to participate and prosper. Nearly 20 percent of African American households, 14 percent of Latino households, and 13 percent of Asian households live without a car. Millions of Americans rely exclusively on public transit, walking, or biking to get to work, to the doctor's office, to school, and to the grocery store.

Right now, a small group of House and Senate leaders are negotiating a transportation bill to bring before the entire Congress in the coming weeks. Their decisions today have the potential to shape our communities for decades to come.

There are two critical equity issues before these leaders and the entire Congress: (1) providing assistance to struggling public transit operators to maintain their bus and train service and keep fares affordable; and (2) preserving the federal environmental laws that allow communities to have their say about how future transportation projects may affect their health and quality of life.

When it comes to transportation, America cannot afford to leave anyone behind.  We need you to:

  • TODAY: Mark your calendar for the National Call-in Day on Transportation, May 23rd, and forward this message to a friend, inviting them to join you in making calls to your legislators.
  • WEDNESDAY: Join a broad coalition of equity advocates in a National Call-in Day on Transportation. Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to be connected to your representative or your senator, and urge them to support transit operating assistance and protect public input opportunities afforded through federal environmental laws. (We'll send a reminder email Wednesday morning, along with talking points.)

Equitable transportation investments are essential for helping struggling families, strengthening vulnerable communities, and to giving a much needed boost to our nation's economy. We know this. And at this critical moment, we've got to make sure Congress understands it too!

Sincerely,
PolicyLink
