I say leave the stickers on. I look at it this way. My surly is like
a ball glove, when its new it’s stiff and a little awkward to use.
But over time the leather stretches, it forms to the hand and
fingers. It becomes an extension of the hand and in this state can
perform its function much better. You could say that it has developed
character. Decals coming off, scratches in the paint, small dings in
the steel all aid in the character development of the bike. Every
blemish is a story, and I love a good story! I think you should keep
a personal journal documenting every scratch and ding. When you read
the story you will be reminded of the good times and yes even some bad
times. But it’s all good. Cause your were biking and enjoying
something you love!
So in my humble opinion, leave’m on and have fun!

I removed all but the Surly decals on the fork and seat stays.
I like the previous poster's idea of associating memories to your LHT.
I think the bottom line is to make it your own and ride/enjoy the bike
often.
I know I do.

I am a decal off guy, but I have always been that way. I have tried to take labels and patches off of clothes for a plain look. Sometimes with success and sometimes not. When I got my LHT some of the decals were already flaking off so I decided to go the full route. Total removal was easy. Bike looks clean, imo.
That said, I have seen lot of nice looking versions with some or all decals intact as well.

I detest excess bike decals. I'm a little marketing sensitive, and I
can't stand the idea of being a rolling advertisement for anything,
even something I really like.
I say excess because I don't mind little identifiers, like head
badges. I also left the Surly on my fork; those are almost subtle. But
the rest, like the Fatties Fit Fine, had to go. I like the NASCAR
analogy--a sticker blaring about how much rubber I can carry reminds
me of all the redneck rigs boasting what kind of headers they've
installed. And take a look at some of those craptacular Wally-world
bikes. I saw one the other day with stickers to let everyone know it
had 24 speeds, it was a hardtail, and it was Shimano equipped, among
other key selling points. I consider my bike above that kind of crass
self-affirmation.
Imagine if cars devoted as much space, as a percentage of available
room, to logos. My trusty old European touring wagon would scream
Volvo across the doors and rear quarter panel to match the average
bicycle. Instead, it features a logo which is actually smaller than
the Surly sticker which had marred my frame.
Sadly, Surly is one of the worst in this regard. I'm thinking the
whole thing is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, some sort of hipster
joke, but I'm glad that at least they made them easy to remove.
Happy Trails,
Ron Georg
Decals off. I too am marketing-sensitive and usually remove excessive
labels and logos from clothing and equipment. I also like to add my
own decorations to personalize things I own, so the decals had to go
to make room for whatever I decide to put there. So far I'm at 2k
miles and it's still empty, but I'm thinkin' real hard.

I kinda like those LHT decals. They do reflect the "spirit" of the bike. :-))
Yes I know they will never win any graphic design contest. But I can´t imagine my bike without them. They will stay there until they decide to leave for themselves :-)) or when the bike deserves another paint job.
Take sometime to visit the Surly website. Visit the blog. You´ll know exactly what I mean by "spirit of the bike". :-))

Cycle jerk was kind enough to send me a photo’d photo of my trucker
sans decals. I'm stuck with two trains of thought on this. First, with
the classic geometry and look of the LHT; you've got quite a nice
canvas to build up a classic-looking touring or even city or utility
bike that would be worthy of honjo fenders, leather bar tape, canvas
bags and a brass bell. A real classic, cyclo-tourist styled bike.
That's where I would like to get my LHT to, but it will take time.
This train would end when I finally had all the right parts on the
frame. Then, the decals might just come off to complete the look.
The second train of thought is this; Surly build good, no-nonsense, no-
hyped up marketing, no-sponsored racing teams to get you to buy our
latest and great stuff type of company. I like that about them. When
no one else is building a decently priced highly capable steel touring
frame, Surley does. Fat tired monster snow bikes? Surley again comes
through. I think that they have done much for the cyclist of today,
with setting up their company, their supply lines and their business
to meet the niche markets that many cyclist find themselves in. Sure
if we all want to jump on the lycra clad band wagon, in yogurt colored
racing jerseys, there would be plenty of overpriced, obsolete-in-a-
year bikes to choose from at any LBS. That's what the masses are into.
Surley has chosen to build bike for those of us who are not
necessarily "the masses". For that, I don't really mind sporting their
logo. I'm thankful that Surely decided to built the LHT, even with the
hideous frame decals. A friend of mine suggested I get a new down-tube
logos that say HONDA , done in the Surley font. Hmmmm….

oday oday. I'm not the best speller on the planet! These first two
words, as well as my entire previous post prove it. Sorry about that.
Typically whatever MS program I'm working in corrects spelling for me,
and I just type what comes to my mind and I rarely proof read. I'll
give it a little more effort from now on. I had one person point out
on my blog that I was inappropriately referring to Alex Wetmore as
Alex Westmore. Thanks for helping to keep me sharp. I dull quickly!
Cheers.
