I am looking to get some spare pads on-hand for the LHT which has the
standard Tektro Oryx #992 cantilevers. I just want to confirm which
model of Kool Stop pads to get or if there are better pads, what is
suggested.
Looking at Wiggle's page on Kool Stops <http://www.wiggle.co.uk/m/ cycle/7/Kool_Stop/> are the Kool Stop Mountain Dual Compound's the
correct ones?
I use the KoolStop MTB pads on my LHT, and I'm not all that happy with
them. No matter what, the fronts squeal like a stuck pig. I've cleaned
the rim numerous times, lightly sanded the pads, toed them in. Have
had the bike back to LBS. They got it to stop for about 20 miles, then
it all started up again. They are just about worn out, so I'll be
replacing them with something else. The KoolStops are fantastic in the
rain, that's for sure. I'll probably look for another model of
KoolStops instead of MTBs.

Did your previous brake pads squeal as well? I'm assuming you've
toed the pads in correctly.
I had a set of XT v-brakes on my LHT initially and no matter what I
did with the pads they squealed. These were brand new brakes and the
brake arms were loose enough to vibrate slightly when braking and
cause the squeal.
I moved the same Koolstop pads over to a set of single pivot deore v- brakes and had silent brakes again.
So sometimes it isn't the pads that cause brake squeal.

I bought the "V-Type" brake shoe + replaceable pad cartridges. They were
around $20 each (front/rear) at the LBS where I bought my LHT. Greatly
increased my stopping power from the stock Tektros, and I also like that I
won't have to set up the brakes again for a good long while. All I have to
do is replace the cartridges.

I like that the "mountain" pads are curved, which gives loads of contact area and makes installation easier. The rim is a circle, after all!
The dual-compound mountain pads are $15 per set at Harris:
You won't have to adjust them very often, since Kool-Stops last sooo much longer than Tektro, Shimano, and others. They also perform better. Frankly, I'm practically embarrassed to ride a bike with any other brand of pad!

I'm about to place a big order from Wiggle, so I figured I might as
well get some new brake pads while I'm at it. Unfortunately the linked
pads (Mountain Dual Compound) are listed as "Discontinued" for the
cantilever version--it seems they now only stock the v-brake version.
Considering that I'm running the stock LHT complete's Tektro cantis, I
presume it would be in bad form to get the v-brake pads.
The question then is, what're the next best pads that Wiggle sells
that would work with my Tektro arms?

mounting posts on both are the same, and I'm pretty sure I could swap
them out either way. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the v-brake
pads might work.

Put these on your LHT cantilevers. They'll work spectacularly. Ok, not the dual compound, but it is the physical model that you are looking for. Get salmon over black.
Thanks for the help guys. I went ahead and ordered the v-brake version
from Wiggle. Here's hoping that they're as much of an improvement over
the stock pads as everyone is saying.
