I really do NOT like the new appearance. It seems that good ol' simple Google has tried to go trashy Yahoo or something. If you could reintroduce an optional classic mode or something...I really don't like folders and no way to archive stuff i don't want to see every time I open up Google Docs. Find a way to be Google and stay pleasingly simple.

Dave, they asked for things we loved and don't love. I think we all love google docs & sheets and that's why we have complaints. We want it to be better. I think they're doing a good job, too.

I had another idea... at the bar on the top of the documents list that says "Name | Folders/Sharing | Date" etc. perhapse you should be able to click on it to sort documents by name/folder/date... etc. just like the windows component that the bar semi-mimics? Default should probably be date (like it already is).

I second this opinion. The "last edited" info was the FIRST thing I looked at when opening Google Docs & Spreasheets. Soooo much more work now to have to click into multiple docs many times a day to see if they were changed! Initial list page needs to show when and who last edited.
At the moment, I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. I was one of the folks who wanted folders, because I'm a visual organizer, but I didn't realize that in adding folders you'd get rid of so many other functions! A bullet list of things that need to be resolved, in my opinion:
* Give us back our "last edited by*!!!! It's a vital tool. * Dragging something from one folder to another shouldn't remove it from the original folder. * Sort options would be nice, especially when in the "view all folders" view in the main window * Not all folders are showing in the sidebar or the pull-down menu * It would be nice to be able to drag to multiple files at the same time and/or assign tags which would file docs for you. * An option to share folders would be nice. * Removing docs from multiple folders in order to have them only in an "archive" folder is a real pain in the...doc.

Mine is the same problem. I have about sixty documents on Google Docs, and I share most of them in a huge technical writing collaboration/ consultation effort of which I am in charge. I *need* to know, at a glance, more than that these specific documents were edited today or yesterday or in the last month - and by the way, having just the last two days is not helpful at all; what about weekends, when sometimes no progress gets done at all? Everything would just be in the blob of 'the past month.' This is entirely too vague.
I need to know who edited them, and when exactly - just like was on the last version. I need to know it just by glancing, so I can know who's been working on what lately, without going into sixty different documents individually.

The only practical purpose that folders have that tags don't (necessarily), is the ability to place them in hierarchical structures. Which cannot be done here (at least, not apparently). If there was a concern about organization, both del.icio.us and LiveJournal have ways to structure tags. Not that I want to have to think about it - given that I already have them organized hierarchically on the hard copy.
Drag-and-drop actually makes cross-referencing more difficult.
The layout is, as has already been noted, bad.
You've lost the useful "last edited by" and "archive" functions (which I sincerely hope can be quickly returned).
And you can't even share folders, which would have been a useful innovation.
The only innovations I did like: the ability to add a description (useful if a label isn't commonly used), and the ability to organize a document shared as "view only" (I really wanted to tag them before).
Otherwise, it's a step back.

I third it. It's really helpful, when collaborating on a document, to know if one of my co-authors made a change.
Also stings: the loss of one-click Preview button.
The rest of changes I can live with, but quite frankly I lived quite well without them. I like Google to be more like Google and less like Yahoo.
Dream feature - a notification when another user finishes editing a document, but I can't work out when it would be sent. When the other user clicks Save and Close, perhaps? Or closes the document with changes?
And to the poster who wished for a tabbed interface (sorry, didn't note the name) - both Firefox and IE7 have tabs.
Hi Syd, et al. Thanks for updating, I really like some of the new features, searching, organizing and so on... I put together a list of suggestions to make Docs and Spreadsheets better, here they are: <
