Original text of my post from October: " (The Google login to enter into Google Docs and Spreadsheets is secure, that's not the point.)
The problem is that I am almost constantly logged into my Google account for one or more services. In this case, accessing my documents and spreadsheets is only a click away. I would like to put some documents there which can contain private or sensitive information. It would be very useful if it was possible to "lock" (meaning encrypt) these documents and have them protected through my normal Google password. I could click on a little lock next to the "star" button for example, and the document would become locked. To unlock it, you would need to enter you Google password, even if already logged in. This is a similar layer of security as the one Google already implemented to access your search history, and I think it would be a great addition to Google Docs and Spreadsheets.

I think this is a great idea. But I would like them to use something such as PGP. For the reason that it will be easier to download encrypted and share encrypt. A lot of people are starting to use PGP and it will just be easier to deal with.

I agree 100%. This is an essential addition. Privacy concerns are one of the main reasons my use of Google Docs remains pretty limited. You blog post is right on. one more vote.

Great idea, If you really want that now, try deleteing the cookie (automaticly) so you'll need to login. Also, it would need a https://docs.google.com for REAL security. (like gmail has)

That's still correct. SSL encryption only works for documents so far. You can switch to it manually by manually adding the 's' in "https://" or if you use Firefox, you can use the extension CustomizeGoogle to force Google Docs & Spreadsheets into SSL mode (but it'll switch back to non-SSL when you open a spreadsheet). I'm not sure why SSL cannot yet be supported in spreadsheets...
To Adam, deleting the google cookie automatically is a brute force way to force a re-login, but I think that would quickly become very annoying having to re-enter your password for every Google service you open (Gmail, Calendar, Video, News, etc...).

i'm not sure that pgp would offer any benefits here because i don't see where the need for a public key is, but why not embed encryption into the interface. in other words, the cypher is in the code that is being executed by the browser, so the data is encrypted *on* you machine and the encrypted data is sent up to google's servers. that way the data is encrypted before it ever leaves your machine and is stored in an encrypted format. then when you go to open it again your browser will download the encrypted data and ask you for the key or password.
i don't have allot of use for docs right now because it just doesn't feel secure enough. if i log into my gmail account from a terminal at a coffee house or some other kind of public terminal, it is possible that there could be a key logger running and my google account could be compromised. but a worse scenario is that by having access to that account someone could also have access to the data that i'm not currently willing to save on google docs.
