Johnson Wins Third Brickyard 400
Starting from the front row, Juan Pablo Montoya had a car so dominate that he led 116 of the 160 laps in the Brickyard 400 on Sunday and he threatned to run away with the race but instead he gave it away. Montoya was caught speeding on pit road on the next to the final caution and served a pass-through penalty. It put Montoya in 12th place on the restart and in dirty air. Montoya could never regain the dominance -- he finished 11th on the day. "I was not speeding, I was not speeding," exclaimed Montoya. "I swear on my wife and my children I was not speeding."
It was Jimmie Johnson taking the lead with 24 laps to go and despite a valiant effort from Mark Martin, Johnson never looked back. It was the third victory at the Brickyard in the last four years for Johnson and the second straight win at the famed race track. It was Johnson's 43rd victory in 275 career races. Johnson also was the first to win two consecutive race and only only Jeff Gordon has more total victories at Indy with four.
Martin held on for second place, Tony Stewart was third and Greg Biffle battled to a fourth place finish. Brian Vickers finished fifth followed by Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne, David Reutimann, Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth rounded out the top ten. The win was the seventh for Hendrick Motorsports in the Brickyard 400. The Sprint Cup Series moves to the Pocono Raceway next Sunday for the Pennsylvania 500. The race is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM / Eastern time.

Johnson wins third Brickyard 400:
#48-Jimmie Johnson won the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for his third win at the Brickyard, his third win of 2009 and 43rd of his career. Johnson took the lead for the first time on lap 137 and led those final 24 laps to win. Johnson is the first driver to ever win the Brickyard 400 two years in a row. #42-Juan Pablo Montoya led 116 laps until getting caught speeding on pit road late in the race. #5-Mark Martin, the pole sitter, tried to get around Johnson on the final laps, but Johnson held him off, Martin finished 2nd, tying his best finish there when he was 2nd in 1998. #14-Stewart finished 3rd and increased his points lead to 192 over Johnson, who is now in 2nd. #16-Biffle finished 4th, followed by #83-Vickers, #29-Harvick, #9-Kahne, #00-Reutimann, #24-Gordon and #17-Kenseth. Montoya finished 11th. #88-Earnhardt Jr., who started 3rd, blew an engine on lap 127 and finished 37th. There were only three cautions for 14 caution laps and there were 9 lead changes among 7 drivers.UNOFFICIAL Driver Points Standings

Menard back with Yates in 2010:
Yates Racing co-owner Max Jones said Sunday morning that the team plans to be back up to at least two cars next season, with Paul Menard and the Menards sponsorship returning to the #98 Yates Racing Ford in 2010. Menard has had a disappointing first season with the team which had spurred rumors that the driver and sponsor might move to a different team next season. But Jones said the driver and his sponsor will both continue forward in 2010. "The Menards deal is in place," Jones said Sunday morning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Jones said he was unsure if Yates would campaign the HoF [#96-Bobby Labonte] car again in 2010, saying talks to extend the partnership are underway, but the outcome uncertain. Another possibility is to take the fifth Roush Fenway Racing Ford next season, when NASCAR will require that team to downsize from five to four cars [possibly the #26 Ford with Jamie McMurray...if he stays]. Jones said that one way or another, Yates expects to run at least two cars next year.(SPEEDtv)(7-27-2009) Comment here
Montoya was over 5mph past limit:
#42-Juan Pablo Montoya was well on his way to winning the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. He had the field covered, including winner #48-Jimmie Johnson and runner-up #5-Mark Martin. But Montoya was caught speeding on pit road with 26 laps to go. On his final stop, Montoya came in a little too hot, not once, but twice. NASCAR officials made the call, meaning Montoya would have to go down pit road again for a pass-through penalty. After the race, Sprint Cup director John Darby had the specifics about Montoya's double no-no. Pit road has eight zones where the speed is measured. The speed limit in the pits at Indy is 55 mph. NASCAR gives the drivers a 5 mph cushion. Darby said Montoya was caught over the cushion in Zones 2 and 4. Officially, the speed was recorded at 60.06 mph in Zone 2 and 60.11 mph in Zone 4. "And he was already pushing it," Darby said. "He was over 59 miles per hour in most of the other zones." Montoya's big boo-boo caused him to fall back to 12th. He finished 11th.(ESPN)(7-27-2009) Comment here

Red Bull could decide soon on drivers and manufacturer:
Jay Frye, Vice President and General Manager of Red Bull Racing says he expects to have driver #83-Brian Vickers' contract extension finalized, and a manufacturer decision made, after he travels to Austria next week to meet with Red Bull officials. Frye said several weeks ago that a contract extension between Red Bull which owns and sponsors the team's two-car effort and Vickers was one step away from being completed, but had not been approved. While ironing that out will be a priority, so to will be determining whether to remain with Toyota or making a move to another manufacturer. Vickers, who has driver for the team since 2007, told reporters Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that he was "keeping all my options open & the ball is in their court." Red Bull Racing was one of Toyota's original teams when the automaker joined NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series in 2007. Despite reports that have paired the organization with Chevrolet in 2010, Frye said nothing has been determined.(SceneDaily)(7-27-2009) Comment here

NASCAR in Argentina; Schrader to drive:
On Sunday July 19th, three NASCAR vehicles from Roush Fenway Racing arrived at the Buenos Aires City Port. On August 2, those cars will hold a special exhibition during the celebration of a Turismo Carretera Series racing weekend at Potrero de los Funes, a racetrack located in the San Luis Province. The American team will bring Ken Schrader who also has four wins in the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Argentinean drivers Matías Rossi (3M driver in Turismo Carretera) and Diego Aventín will drive with Schrader in the 6250 meters (3.88 miles) circuit. The vehicles that will be showcased around the circuit on Saturday -in between the Turismo Carretera and TC Pista qualifying sessions, and on Sunday before the feature race of the mayor series in Argentina, come from the Sprint Cup, the Nationwide Series, and the Camping World Series. Turismo Carretera was the first series created in the world, which earned it a Guinness Record Book mention. The first race was held in 1937 and over these 72 years has become a huge passion for Argentineans, just second to soccer. Every Turismo Carretera race attracts an average of 40,000 fans. For the event on August 2, at the track known as "Potrero de los Funes," it is expected that a record number of more than 60,000 fans will attend, since it is a street course around a lake. Roush Fenway Racing will bring their crew chief and two mechanics that will travel with Ken Schrader.(Media Racing)(7-27-2009) Comment here
F1 Driver Massa Seriously Injured:
Formula One Ferrari driver Felipe Massa remained in "life-threatening" but stable condition on Sunday following surgery on multiple skull fractures. Peter Bazso, the AEK hospital medical director, told reporters that Massa would remain sedated until Monday, but will be woken up periodically during that time. When asked whether Massa's life remained in danger, Bazso answered: "Yes, of course." A spring, from fellow Brazilian driver Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP car, bounced into Massa's helmet as the 28-year-old driver reached speeds of about 120 mph during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. The impact concussed Massa, who then plowed into the protective tire barrier. The impact of the rear suspension part, believed to be made of steel, damaged the left side of Massa's helmet, ripping out the visor and leaving a long dent on its side. Blood was visible on Massa's left brow. The crash came less than a week after Henry Surtees, the son of former F1 champion John Surtees, died in similar circumstances in an F2 race last Sunday. Surtees was struck in the head by a tire from another car, causing him to lose consciousness and drive into a barrier. FIA would investigate the crash, which is commonplace for the governing body.(Associated Press/ESPN)(7-27-2009)

Indianapolis – Jimmie Johnson won the Brickyard 400 by a narrow margin over Mark Martin, but it will be remembered as the race Juan Pablo Montoya lost.
Taking the lead with an outside pass on the double-file restart, Johnson out-dueled the Chevy of Hendrick Motorsports teammate Martin over the final 23 laps of green. But the only reason there was any battle at all was the sudden departure of Montoya’s dominant Chevy.

USARacing’s Newest Winner, David Wilson on Kickin’ Asphalt This Tuesday
July 27th, 2009
Concord, N.C. (July 27, 2009) – The Racetalkradio.com show, Kickin’ Asphalt Powered by NOS Energy Drink will have the Hickory 250 presented by Calico Coatings race winner, David Wilson on as a guest this Tuesday, July 28th.
Wilson has run several Pro Cup races back in 2006, but ran his first race since then this past weekend at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, NC. Wilson was offered a ride with DLP Motorsports and made the best of his deal by sitting on the Strutmaster.com Pole and then taking the win after a late-race pass on Series point leader, Clay Rogers with three laps to go.
Kickin’ Asphalt Powered by NOS Energy Drink on RaceTalkRadio.com is broadcast live each Tuesday from 6 – 8p EST at the Victory Lane Indoor Karting Center located at 2330 Tipton drive Suite 100, Charlotte, NC with hosts Doc Love and Alan Dietz.
Back to Back Top 10 Finishes for John Gibson
John Gibson, driver of the No.13S Kinetik Battery/Circle Track Ford Fusion scored his second top ten finish in two weeks with the USAR Pro Cup Series, bringing home eighth place in Saturday night’s Hickory 250 presented by Calico Coatings in Hickory, NC.
"The competition in this series is tough and qualifying was very tight as usual, with a number of us qualifying in the 16.0’s," said John. "There were about eight or 10 of us all right there together. Unfortunately, our car just happened to be on the tail end of the 16 flat’s, with a 16.09. That put us starting deep in the field at 18th."
Prior to the start of the event, John was interviewed on the front stretch regarding the High Performance Kinetik Batteries and one lucky fan was the recipient of a C-Tek Battery Charger given away through a drawing.
With nearly every car still on the lead lap at the first caution past the 50 lap mark, everyone came in for fuel. At a small track like Hickory, that’s a recipe for disaster. With crew chief Jody Lavender counting him in, John turned into his pit stall, but the No.11 of AJ Frank didn’t see him, and turning out of his pit stall, he climbed over the left front quarter panel of John’s car.
"I don’t blame AJ; it was just a racing thing. It really did minimal damage to our car, and AJ ended up with a good finish too. Unfortunately it did knock out the left front crush panel," said John, "and boy was it hot in there after that. I’m so glad that I was given the opportunity to run a Cool Shirt for this race. Having this happen so early in the race, it would have been nearly unbearable otherwise."
It took a couple more pit stops to make quick repairs, but the Gibson Motorsports crew was on its game, and John was able to stay on the lead lap. John worked his way through the field, and after a couple of dicey, three-wide passes, John worked the Kinetik Battery/Circle Track Ford Fusion inside the top ten, ultimately taking home a respectable 8th place finish.
"I think we had a car capable of more than 8th place, and it kept getting better as the race progressed, but we just ran out of laps," said John.
The next stop for the Gibson Motorsports Kinetik Battery/Circle Track Ford Fusion is August 8th at South Boston Speedway in South Boston, VA.
David Wilson Wins the Hickory 250

David Wilson Comes Back to Pro Cup and Steals the Show at Hickory Motor Speedway
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hickory, NC (July 25, 2009) – David Wilson, a Florida late-model champion, returned to the Pro Cup Series for the first time since 2006 and stole the show from the Pro Cup regulars. After taking the Strutmaster.com Pole in qualifying, Wilson pulled off a late race pass on points leader, Clay Rogers, to win the Hickory 250 presented by Calico Coatings on Saturday night.
"I couldn’t complain about today," Wilson said with a grin. "When I set the pole I could have gone home happy, so with a win you can only imagine."
Wilson, who is a well-known late-model driver from Sarasota, FL, has not run a Pro Cup race for nearly three years. After not racing in the Pro Cup Series for three years, Wilson jumped at the opportunity to run a one-race deal with DLP Motorsports and capitalized on the opportunity this weekend.
Although Wilson led the field to the green it was Raybestos Rookie, Lucas Ransone, who led the first lap. Wilson stayed in the top ten all night long, but did not take the lead until just three laps to go when he found an opening to pass Rogers and go on to Victory Lane.
"It was unbelievable running with the veterans. When I was running third I thought I could be content there. I really didn’t think I had the car to beat Clay, and I was sure he was saving his stuff," commented Wilson. "It was hard to chase him down, you had to hit every lap, and you couldn’t make one mistake. The moment I caught him I used the lapped car to my advantage, and split us three wide. I was in the middle and Clay gave me plenty of room. I have to thank him, that’s why he is a champion, because he runs very smart."
After taking a race off A.J. Frank came back in the Mac Hill Motorsports No. 11s. Frank continued his top-five hot streak and led 14 laps at the mid-point of the race finishing the race in fourth.
"It was a great race," said Frank. "I’m just going to keep knocking on the top-fives and hopefully a win will come.
Leading Raybestos Rookie of the Year contender, Lucas Ransone, established his dominance on lap one taking the lead from Wilson and continuing to lead the next 30 before Rogers made a pass taking the lead. Ransone continued to run strong until an unexpected green flag pit stop on Lap 83 put the Rookie two laps down and causing him to officially fall out of the race on lap 228
"I was leading and the car was cutting pretty well and I felt it start dragging and I figured it was low air pressure, but as the race went on it was still cutting," explained Ransone. "Then we had that restart and I went to the bottom, things just didn’t feel right. I guess a bolt came out of the shock mount and it just started rubbing, and we had chaos from then on. We had a great car, and a fast car, but I guess the fastest car doesn’t always win. We will take it and be back at South Boston."
Drew Herring has had quite a rollercoaster season so far this year. After a top-five finish last weekend at Motor Mile, this weekend would be yet another disappointment for the 2008 Raybestos Rookie of the Year. While running in the top ten Herring got caught up in a restart pile-up on lap 106 and his night continued to go downhill.
"I just had a streak of bad luck. We got caught up in a wreck and messed some stuff up on the right front, then we got spun. But the guys kept digging, making adjustments and doing the best they could with what we had. Then we dropped a cylinder and you could just hear the metal inside it tearing up. By the time we pulled the car in the engine died and that was the end of our night."
The race lasted 1:51:50 with 11 cautions and an average speed of 79.668 mph and a margin of 0.794 second for the win.
Michael Ritch was the halfway leader going on to led 12 laps and finish twelfth. Bobby Gill earned the Aaron’s Do the Math Hard Charger award when he picked up 20 spots to finish fourth going on to lead 65 laps during the night.
Kyle Fowler was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race with his first top-ten finish in the Pro Cup Series.
