Court Reinstates Mayfield Injunction

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., on Friday granted NASCAR's request to lift an injunction granted by a lower court judge, and Jeremy Mayfield is again suspended for what officials say was a May 1 positive test for methamphetamines until an appeal of the judge's ruling can be heard. "We are pleased with the 4th Circuit Court's ruling to reinstate NASCAR's suspension of Jeremy Mayfield," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said in a statement. "This is an important decision for NASCAR to make fair and equitable regulations for the safety of competitors and spectators at the track. We will continue to respectfully make our case for as long as the litigation continues." Mayfield had obtained an injunction July 1 to keep NASCAR from enforcing that suspension. NASCAR then asked U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen to lift his injunction until an appeal could be heard and/or rescind the injunction based on a July 6 test that NASCAR says also showed positive results for methamphetamines. Mayfield disputes that finding because he took an independent test on the same day that he says shows negative results for methamphetamines. NASCAR also had asked the U.S. Court of Appeals to lift the injunction until the appeal could be heard - an appeal which likely wouldn't be decided until October. It was that request that was granted Friday. "Upon review of appellants' motion for a stay of the preliminary injunction pending appeal and appellees' response, the Court grants the motion for stay pending appeal," the one-page order says.

Indy Goodyear Tire Notes

Goodyear returns to Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a new tire set-up developed after a comprehensive, 11-month testing effort -- since last summer's Brickyard 400, Goodyear has conducted seven tire tests at the Speedway -- three last fall, two this spring prior to the Indianapolis 500 and two in June after the Indianapolis 500 -- in all, Goodyear worked with 30 different drivers and teams over those seven tests and logged more than 14,000 miles on the Speedway -- the left-side tire code (D-4178) that NASCAR Sprint Cup teams will be running this weekend is also run at Pocono -- teams will be running a new right-side tire code (D-4252) -- this right-side features a new tread compound that utilizes a different formulation strategy to address the high wear characteristics of the Speedway and help "rubber in" the track while maintaining performance and heat dissipation -- as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at IMS -- air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than the outer tire.

Shakeup At General Motors

General Motors announced a sweeping shakeup among its executive ranks today, along with naming the final five new members of its board of directors. The changes come after GM emerged from bankruptcy June 10 as a new company whose majority owner is the U.S. government. Along with cutting its salaried worker ranks by 4,000 and reducing its executive ranks by 35%, GM CEO Fritz Henderson had promised a new management structure for the company by the end of July. Today's announcement includes retirements of five senior executives, including former North America President Troy Clarke and Gary Cowger, group vice president of global manufacturing and labor relations. Tim Lee, who had been GM North America vice president of manufacturing, will take over for Cowger as group vice president for global manufacturing and labor relations. There will also be a new head of Chevrolet. Brent Dewar, currently GM Europe vice president of sales, marketing and aftersales, will become vice president of global Chevrolet brand. The company also released the names of five people to fill the last open seats on the 13-member board of directors.

Gossage Battling Cancer

Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage has been absent from TMS because he has been undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. Gossage, 50, was diagnosed with cancer early last fall and began treatment this spring. Gossage, who oversaw the construction of the track and was the general manager for its first race in 1997, declined to be interviewed. A statement from TMS vice president of media relations Mike Zizzo said Gossage "would like to keep his illness private and does not plan to discuss it publicly." Gossage was informed by doctors in February that treatment needed to begin, and it was done around the Samsung 500 in April and the Bombardier Learjet 550 in June. He was at the track for the IndyCar Series race in June and looked thinner than he did at the Sprint Cup event in April. He hasn't appeared at any TMS public functions since the June race as he has undergone more intense treatments over the last month. Gossage is hoping to return to work next month.

Martin makes history at the Brickyard:

#5-Mark Martin's lap of 49.436 seconds, 182.054mph for the Allstate 400 made Martin the oldest pole winner of a major event in Indianapolis Motor Speedway history. Martin's age of 50 years, 197 days old eclipses the previous record set by Cliff Bergere, who was 49 years, 175 days old when he won the pole for the 1946 Indianapolis 500. The previous Allstate 400 at the Brickyard record was set by Jimmy Spencer, when he won the pole at age 44 years, 171 days in 2001. "I like making history; that's cool," Martin said. "Yesterday was a lot of fun for me. We struggled through race trim practice and then we went into Q (qualifying) trim and we made improvements. We made three qualifying runs, the last one was about 10 minutes left of practice, (and) we went to the top of the board. You should have seen the light in all my guys' faces."(IMS)(7-26-2009) Comment here

Jeff Gordon still having back problems:

#24-Jeff Gordon says he has decided not to have a second procedure to deal with an achy back and instead will try to deal with the pain. Gordon said Saturday during qualifying for Sunday's race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that the first procedure didn't help much and he doesn't see the point in having another injection of anti-inflammatory medication. Gordon has been dealing with a sore back for several months but ruled out surgery because it was too invasive. Instead he will continue to focus on a series of stretching exercises and physical training in hopes the condition will improve.(

New Look for Robby's #7 at Indy:

#7-Robby Gordon returns to Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend for the 16th running of the Brickyard 400. Johns Manville, a leading manufacturer of premium quality building insulation, returns as the primary sponsor of the #7 Toyota Camry.(RGM), see images of the scheme on my
#7 Team Schemes page.(7-26-2009)

New sponsor for Gilliland at Indy:

TRG Motorsports' welcomes
Racehost.com onboard the #71 Chevy of David Gilliland this weekend for the Allstate 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Race Host, founded in 1996, was the first racing website design company to work exclusively in the racing, motorsport and automotive industry. "We're excited about our new team partner Racehost.com and are looking forward to working together long into the future," Buckler continued. Gilliland qualified the #71 Racehost.com/TRG Motorsports Chevy in 37th for the race.(TRG), see images of the car on my #71 Team Schemes page.(7-26-2009)

Busch - Johnson make up:

#2-Kurt Busch has an excuse for why it took so long for he and #48-Jimmie Johnson to patch things up after a dustup at Chicago two weeks ago: bad cell service. Busch said Friday he hadn't had a chance before Friday to respond to a text message from Johnson offering to talk after a late-race clash between the two drivers sent Busch to a 17th-place finish at Chicago and left him fuming. The two finally chatted Friday before practice for Sunday's race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Busch said the two would've talked sooner but blamed the lack of communication on a busy schedule.(

Earnhardt Jr. fighting stomach virus:

#88-But Dale Earnhardt Jr. won't let two days of fever, IVs and nausea keep him out of Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "We didn't have to dial 911," Earnhardt said after qualifying third on Saturday. "I had a stomach virus pop up late Thursday night and was throwing up and all that good stuff all the way up until 5 o'clock in the morning [Friday]. I came here and got a couple of IVs early in the afternoon. I broke my fever about 8 o'clock yesterday morning. The fever came back last night but I broke it again. I've just been sweating a lot and probably will get some more fluids this afternoon after practice." Earnhardt still will have Brad Keselowski, who drives for him in the Nationwide Series, on hand as a backup driver. Keselowski, who was scheduled to take a couple of practice laps in Earnhardt's Cup car, is competing at nearby O'Reilly Raceway Park in Saturday night's Nationwide race. "I doubt we'll need it," Earnhardt said. "I did that basically to be safe. The only thing I have to worry about is being hydrated from here on out. I feel tons better. That stomach virus was the worst thing I experienced in my life. I used to think sore throats were the worst aggravatingest thing. I'm not a very big fan of stomach viruses now."(

Jul 25 NASCAR Nationwide Series:Carl Edwards comes from the back to win at ORP! Tonight’s Kroger 250 got underway with Trevor Bayne, in the #99, starting from the pole; with #20 Brad Coleman alongside. Double-duty drivers, #18 Kyle Busch, #60 Carl Edwards, #32 David Reutimann, and #16 Matt Kenneth all started from the rear of the field due to missing qualifying earlier. Lap one would lead to trouble for Coleman, as he tagged the wall after contact with Bayne, and #6 Erik Darnell (R), starting right behind in fourth. Twenty laps into the 200 lap event, the top-five leaders ran as #99 Bayne, #66 Steven Wallace, #11 Scott Lagasse, #88 Brad Keselowski, and #1 Mike Bliss. On the following lap, Keselowski ran up into Lagasse, heading him into the wall; Bliss then slid into the #11, sending both cars to the garage, Lagasse’s day was done, Bliss would later return to the track. Lap 35 brought out another yellow for rookie #15 Michael Annett, who got loose, and tagged the wall. As the caution lights came on, the pace car appeared to come out early, and race leader-Bayne, slowed to avoid passing the car, which led #66 Wallace to clip the #99 from behind, spinning Bayne on track.

Ranger Gets It Done In Edmonton

Leads Wire-To-WireShon Sbarra, NASCAR
July 25, 2009 - 3:06pm

EDMONTON, Alberta –

After starting on the pole for the third consecutive year at Rexall Speedway, Andrew Ranger picked up his first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 victory at the track in the Canadian Tire 100 on Saturday afternoon.

Ranger, 22, led the race the entire way, but had to hold off a hard-charging JR Fitzpatrick in a three-lap sprint to the finish after a late caution flag. On the restart, Fitzpatrick made every attempt to get past Ranger as the two headed into Turn 1 of the 14-turn, 1.973 temporary road course. Fitzpatrick tried again in Turn 11, but to no avail. He was able to get alongside Ranger as they drag raced to the finish line, but Ranger was able to find enough horsepower to beat Fitzpatrick to the line by .481 seconds.

Ranger’s wire-to-wire win was the first in series history. The Roxton Pond, Quebec native now has six wins in his series career which places him in a tie with Scott Steckly for the all-time series lead.

Steckly finished third after trailing Ranger and Fitzpatrick for most of the race. He took several looks along the way to try and work past Fitzpatrick, but was never able to complete a pass.

Finishing fourth was Trevor Seibert. He qualified 10th, but had to drop to the rear of the field due to a post-qualifying engine change. The veteran road-course racer quickly charged through the field for his best series finish since a third-place effort at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres (Que.) in 2007.

Don Thomson Jr., who is off to a rocky start this season, finished fifth and will look to jump start his season after his first top-five finish in 2009.

Rounding out the top 10 were Ron Beauchamp Jr., Jason Hathaway, Mark Dilley, Joey Hanssen and Anthony Simone.

The race was slowed by caution just two times for six laps.

Unofficially in the championship point standings, Ranger extended his lead to 74 points over Steckly, who moved into the second spot with his third straight podium finish. Beauchamp currently sits in third place just 11 points behind Steckly.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series get right back into action on Wednesday night at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway in Saskatoon, Sask., for the Velocity Prairie Thunder presented by Bayer Crop Science. The 250-lap event is not only the series’ first visit to Saskatchewan, but also the first NASCAR-sanctioned event in the province
