Thanks, Elizabeth and Miguel for bringing up these concerns.
First, I do agree that we need to reconsider the way that we are approaching the funding of the retreat, and we will definitely address these concerns and discuss other methods of fund-raising at our next retreat planning committee meeting, if not sooner. We definitely do not want to just be asking for a hand-out (or appear to be doing so) without providing some value back to the parishioners of St. Albert. After looking at our anticipated costs for the retreat, we felt that many people would be discouraged from attending what we're hoping will be a valuable opportunity for young adults in the parish to grow in their spiritual lives, and so that was the motivation for requesting funds. I don't think other methods of fund-raising had really occurred to us at our previous meeting, and, admittedly, that's something that we need to discuss.
It is important to clarify that what we're trying to do is organize a retreat with a spiritual focus, not just a social outing or a camping trip or something like that. We were thinking that Inks Lake State Park would be a good natural setting for the retreat and was one of the more affordable options we had discussed.
Also, I think this a good opportunity to give everyone a little more information about the retreat, and a heads-up to those who might be interested. Please understand that the retreat is still in the early stages of planning, so some of this may change, but here's some initial details:
